JB Hi-Fi Asking for ID to Purchase Gift Cards

Like everyone else I was trying to convert Ultimate GC to Apple GC at JB Hi-fi Highpoint (VIC) today. Brought 6 $100 Apple GCs to the counter and the girl asked what are you using them for. Standard scam prevention, I thought, so I told her they are for Apple Black Friday next week. She said she needed manager permission. Another guy appeared telling me the cards can only be used for apps. I patiently pointed to the image of Apple devices at the back of the packaging. He then wanted to know what I’m going to buy (rolling my eyes at this point). To be fair, I’m young and gullible looking, so maybe they just meant well, I thought.

They scanned the GCs and the guy told the register girl to add a comment (probably on their system??). She asked for my ID. I gave it thinking she just wanted to verify that I’m over 18 years old, but she proceeded to put my details down. I was dumb founded, but I had been at the cashier for almost 5 mins at this point, there was a long line behind and I just wanted my GCs, so I paid and left.

Is this normal practice?

I think gift card more than a certain amount require ID in JB, Woolworths also required ID for >$1000 GC purchase

Having been the victim of someone stealing $550 worth of JBHiFi eGiftCards previously, I appreciate that JBHiFi are recording customer details, as this would have resulted in me receiving my money back from the opportunistic scumbags who stole them through data theft.

You don't know how they are recording these details, nor how long they hold it for. I'm not having my ID compromised by JB Hifi who want to protect their interests, not mine. You don't know what would have happened if they'd had the scammer's details. I'm sorry you lost your money, but having loads of businesses recording customer IDs all over the place is not the solution.

Never allow any retailer to take any of your ID cards in order to enter the details into their systems as 99.9% of the time the system9s) hey enter the info into is not secure.

To be fair, I’m young and gullible dodgey looking

^ Probably more like that? haha ^

  • should have told them tax bill or to buy a used car that the owner is on an off shore oil rig….

  • I think she probably didn't do anything wrong in asking for your ID to see it.
But on the other hand I don't think there's a restriction on gift cards either that like kids cannot buy gift cards unlike alcohol.

May be she shouldn't have recorded your details tho, as recording of your details wasn't necessary?

Also increasing no. of gift card scams are not rare, just ask anyone about prepaid coles mastercards, those cannot be sold 5+ to a customer. (Coles says reason is to limit scam, but ofcourse everyone knows the real reason)

Eitherway dude, you got what you wanted ? Yeah so stop making such a fuss about it.

  • Equally annoying is that JB Hifi asks for ID when buying something with gift cards too.

Did you ask them first to show you that they comply to the Privacy Act?

@Johnsmithaus: It seems you have 55 comments, …. why?

            • @jv: Don't know mate, just curious why somebody would be so active on such a forum in such a unique manner. 55 is good enough for me, I don't have time for 97,000.

              • @Johnsmithaus:

Trie. Viewing your data is very different to recording it. Recording it increases your risk. How is it stored, when is it shared, who is it shared with etc. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that and if you can be bothered I'd be asking jb to advise on their practices.

Honestly that was my thought after the whole ordeal. I wish I had asked, but I didn’t.

I used to work at JB. It was standard practice to take details when purchasing a large amount of gift cards. (especially Apple). There were multiple scams going around and still going where a "debt" or "fine" worth many thousands could be paid off in under $1000 in Apple gift cards. Warning people that there are scams doesn't stop them from buying them because they are scared and/or embarrassed.

Same went when people tried to pay for big purchases like phones, laptops TVs with small value gift cards. Multiple times police were involved after they were used because they ended up being stolen.
