Edifier S2000 MKIII Quality Not Great?

Hey Guys,

Got a pair of edifiers S2000 MKIII. I have them next to a beaten up Z623 that I picked up from facebook market for 50bux. The previous owner used the Z623 as outdoor speakers and have blasted them.

The S2000MKIII have around 10 hrs playback on them. The Z623 is connected via stereo cable to computer onboard audio and the edifiers via optical cable. both running at 24Bit, 192KHz. I do not have any audio enhancers for mother board audio enabled so the logitechs are playing unmodified Audio.

I tried many types of audios right from just a person speaking (daily dose of internet) to pop, jazz, rock and everything in between. I even played some flac files on VLC player. Its very easy for me to switch speakers in windows by just selecting the output device and Yet, in side by side comparision I find the the Z623 to sound a bit better - 5 to 10% better in most cases.

What wrong am I doing? here is what I felt.
1) With voice only audio on edifiers like Daily dose of internet or Stephane Maarek speaking on Udemy at 1.25X speed, it feels like they are speaking through thier nose and there is audible echo becuase the speakers are big. But sound good on logitechs.

2) With other types of Audio, the Logitechs always sounded more open and bright and nice to listen.

I tried sitting next to the speakers for desktop and then sitting 6 feet away like i was watching TV. And then I tried it in bigger room sitting 10 feet away and keeping them 10 feet apart. But in all cases, I felt the logitechs were better. Everytime I switched Audio, I wished the better sounding ones were edifiers, but they were not.

There are cases where few sounds were more enchanced in edifier and some on logitech, but I felt the logitechs better. I was recently watching starwars and when a spaceship decends, the thrusters (frequency played on speakers not woofer) on the rocket sounded much better on logitech where as they were barely audible on edifiers.

There is nothing wrong with the speakers. Got a sealed piece, everything intact. Very balanced. So balanced that I feel the sound is coming from the monitor. Its just that I felt i was expecting a bit more from these after all the hype! These are infact the best sounding edifier after the S3000 right?

Am I doing anything wrong? Is the internal DAC of edifiers optical converters crap? Any feedback opinion appreciated before I decide to send these back to Amazon this friday.

Oh, I also tried connecting logitechs to logitech bluetooth adapter and then connected both logitech and edifiers to my phone and tried playing from my phone and even in that case, the logitech sounded almost the same or a bit better than edifiers just like on PC.

Thanks.

  • You're not doing anything wrong, anything can be fixed with Time Machine, at the right price…

  • +1

If they couldn't get it right with the Mark 1 or 2, why do you think they would have figured it out by the third one.

    • Wish it was that simple, but people have been calling logitechs crap in front of these and these have been compared to expesive 1000$ speakers with discrete amp setup.

      • And now you know the definition of subjective ;)

Just like everything else in audio - zero objectivity (hence the need to co-op words like "bright" for audio!!) :P

        • They are not all that different to be honest. I haev had good headphones/portable amp, IEM etc, so I do know the difference. I posted the same question on Amazon and recieved an answer from another customer saying he wasnt impressed either.

Also I am not saying they are bad, but when 50$ thrashed speakers sound as good, whats the point spending this much on these and wasting so much space on the desk.

      • Would you say they sound "flat"?

        • Not really. See my response to Clippers below.

  • I don't have any experience with either speakers. But did you have an EQ enabled when you were using just the Logitechs?
That might explain why things sound really weird on the other speakers. Might be kind of ridiculous but just what came to mind.

I measured each of my Bluetooth speakers in real time with an App and corrected the frequency response with PEQ to achieve a specific target. They all sound great afterwards but if I enable the EQ for a different speaker it sounds weird like you suggested.

    • EQ in windows? No. I did adjust bass and treble so that they sound close to each other. They do sound almost similar but I was expecting eddies to sound a quite a bit better based on what I read on ozb and other places.

      • "EQ in windows?"

Yeah or whatever player you are using. But it seems like you didn't do any EQ for the Logitech prior to getting the Edifiers. So yeah not sure if that's not the cause.
By adjusting bass and treble I assume you mean on the speakers. Yeah I would probably do the same.

        • I am finally getting the feel that Z623 are actually good pairs of speakers and investing a lot more will not get you more returns.

          • @[Deactivated]: I don't know what to tell you other than maybe give them some time. If you don't play them often maybe 2 weeks or so without changing any settings and see if things improve. If not back they go.

            • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: I have time till saturday to return. will play with them all friday evening. Will mvoe them back to living and watch a few movies and songs in a larger room.

On second thoughts, I can get the logitech Z906 and get surround as well for the same money.

  • i am on my second set of Edifier speakers. They are great bang for buck but what frustrates me is there is no fuse for the power supply on them so when that goes, they are useless.

    • This is why I won't go near active bookshelf speakers again. I got a pair of Aktimate Maxis maybe 9 years ago, and they were great for maybe 6 years before the electronics went rendering them useless.

However, I spent some time googling and figured out how to wire them to bypass the 'active' guff and essentially turn them into passives. Actually pretty easy even for someone with no knowledge or ability in the area, thankfully! They're still going strong through an amp now.

Might be worth trying if you've got any fried actives.

  • Check that they are running in phase.
The second half of this youtube clip is quite useful - speaker polarity check - test tone

    • No, they both seem to be fine.

  • What kind of speakers did you have prior to these? Have you been listening to 2.1 setups all along and hence the Z623 sound better?

The S2000 also need space to sound their best; they are not near field speakers.

I went from 2.1 passive bookshelves with active sub to just 2.0 (ditched the sub) to the Edifier S2000 MKIII for past 2 years. The S2000 sound good enough for me and the convenience won me over. I use them for TV, movies, music.. everything!

    • I was on Creative 5.1 before, Logitech's 2.1. Its not the sub. The bass on these are enough for me. The audio quality is not as great as the reviews. Its just on par with the 50$ speakers I have. To add to that if I am listening to movies and if the person has a low frequency voice, it sounds more like his nose is blocked due to cold on edifiers and its easy to miss certain dialogues. Crystal clear on the Logitechs.

I was also watching a Udemy tutorials when I noticed the tutors keyboard typing noise was more amplified on edifiers but wasnt much on Logis. Things like this can get annoying after paying so much. I will move this to larger room and see if these sound better than the Logis on larger settings.

  • I didn't like my s2000 pro from a few years ago and returned them. Trust your ears. If you don't like em return them.

    • I am gonna give them one last try in a larger room tomorrow to see if they suit larger room settings. If I dont like them, I will return them.

  • i also wasnt that impressed, especially after seeing nothing but great reviews for it
even for the $391.81 i paid for it i didn't find it worth it

    • Good to know I am not alone. I paid 415 tho. I do not know if these are too big for desktop use and maybe smaller ones may be better. But i am hesitant to give this brand another try considering the big ones failed to deliver.

  • I've got the 2750's and found placement/listening position made a big difference to the quality of sound. I followed this guide and once I nailed the sweet spot it is like night and day.

Edit: Mine are stand mounted, not on a desk.

    • Yup, pretty much tried all those things. They are angled as well. Will try it in a bigger room this evening and see. Thanks for the link :)

  • So….call me a sucker but I have owned 3 different edifier powered speakers over the years. Staring with el cheapos….and up to RBT 1700 BT. I got sucked in by hype a kind of upgraded twice. Both times I have been let down. Despite hype the are basically pretty flat when it comes to music. Ok for computer though. If you want them for music pull out the credit card and go upmarket.
