Two questions about the Switch

Hi all,

I have two questions that I'm hoping you can help me with please:

First Question: So my Joy Cons have got the dreaded drift, so which one of these options would be the best course of action:
- Send them to Nintendo repair and pay $100 to have it repaired as it's out of warranty. This isn't ideal for me as I'm better off buying a new pair of controllers.
- Repair it myself. I'm ok with repair work and I'm sure there's plenty of video on Youtube to fix it.
- Buy a new pair of Joy Cons, I don't know if I should go for first party ones or are others ones like this ok: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195062820542?hash=item2d6aa66ebe…

I already have a pro controller, which I used in the interim, but I need to keep it connected to the console. That's why I'm looking for options regarding the Joy Cons, especially if I decide to take it with me out of the house.

Second Question: I'm thinking of upgrading my micro SD card to a bigger storage, is there any particular difference with the brands such as SanDisk, Lenovo, Samsung etc?

Thank you in advance.

Definitely do not pay $100 to repair them when they are sub $100 brand new lol

Repair yourself is the cheapest method, approx ~$15 for 2 joystick and all tools, they are not too hard to open unless you have fat fingers like me, and even I managed to do it.

I already have a pro controller, which I used in the interim, but I need to keep it connected to the console.

Why do you need to keep it connected? It works on bluetooth and you should be able to play wirelessly?

Second Question: I'm thinking of upgrading my micro SD card to a bigger storage, is there any particular difference with the brands such as SanDisk, Lenovo, Samsung etc?

They are all mostly the same. Nintendo switch has a hardware limit (I believe capped at 100mb/s read) so there is no advantage of getting anything higher. I am currently using a $59 512gb from this deal.

    • Yeah man, I agree about not paying to repair them.

The battery is pretty crappy with it, but it could be due to the cable. To be honest, I haven't bothered trying another one so I should do that soon.

Hmm, that's a good deal. I was thinking of getting a Lenuvo 1TB though I'm gonna wait for Black Friday to check for any other deals

  • If your only other options are to buy new ones or pay as much to repair as buying new ones, you might as well have a go at the repair yourself. Is there another option you're considering? Trying to get them to fix under ACL or keeping them with the drift?

    • It's past warranty and Nintendo only has email support so I can't quote the ACL to them

  • I've heard that Nintendo will still repair them for free quite often even if they're out of warranty. It's been discussed on the Whirlpool Switch thread a few times, so maybe ask over there how to go about it.

    • Will do cheers

  • I sent my joy cons off for “assessment” earlier this year and they were over a year out of warranty, but they ended up posting them back to me all repaired and without charge! They even threw in a collectible Pokémon promo pin!
Since it’s a known issue, I would definitely consider sending them off, because their process is they’ll send you a prepaid label to post them and once received, they’re meant to get back to you regarding proceeding with repair and costs …but I got mine back without hearing from them at all! It was fairly quick too, considering covid delays, got mine back within 2 weeks.

In regards to storage, can’t say I’ve noticed any differences during gameplay with a cheap card vs a branded one with high specs. They’re all more or less the same, just be sure to go with a reputable brand with the best price, skim reviews for mentions of failure rates.

    • Hmm sounds good. Don't they charge you for sending it in and getting an assessment though. My joy cons are about 3 years old so I don't think it would qualify for that.

      • They charge $20 if they find no fault

        • Ahh that's reassuring so there's no charge if there's a fault.

          • @thespensa: According to their response when you initiate the repair, they’re supposed to charge and will outline your options, but for such a widely known issue, I think any joy cons sent to them with obvious drifting will be repaired with no charge. Think there are still ongoing class action lawsuits against Nintendo in the US, regarding joy con drift, and they followed with a a lot of free repairs/replacement in a lot of countries, so I think you’d still be covered.
Doesn’t cost you anything to send them in to Nintendo, and if they insist on a fee, then you still have the option on whether you want to pay them for the repair or just have them returned without them doing anything if you don’t pay …but I’d argue that it’d be pretty easy to fight anyway.
My cousin did the same thing after I got mine back, and same thing happened, they got theirs fixed for free.

            • @Vivk: Late to the conversation, but can confirm this worked as it happened to me.

  • Sorry for piggybacking on this thread but has anyone had trouble with the SR and SL ribbon cables when re-assembling joycons? It was very fiddly for me to get it to stay connected when I was screwing the casing back together .

Other than that it was pretty simple to replace the sticks

  • I ended up buying a new pair of joycons (in colours I preferred). But I have recently bought one of those cheaper than $30 switch controllers from amazon and it will definitely save my new joycons from getting drift.

I was just too lazy and couldn't be bothered with sending the joycons off for repair (and it was covid and my entire life was animal crossing, so I wasn't giving up joycons for anything LOL).

    • Is the switch controller you brought from amazon a pro controller?

  • I traded my faulty ones in at EB when they had a 50% trade bonus. Got something like 47 each for them. I mentioned the fault and they said it was no problem because they get someone to look them over and repair them anyway.
Already had my replacement long before I traded them in.
