Pixel 6a: Buy Phone + SIM Outright, or Get a "Plan"?

Hi,

What's the cheapest/best way to get a new Pixel (eg 6a)? eg Should I buy one outright + buy a 365 day SIM, or get phone + SIM via some sort of "plan"?

Context: My Pixel 3 is on its way out (broken back, dodgy power button). A Pixel 6a is probably a sufficient replacement for my needs. I'd like 4G Telstra network coverage.

Normally, I'd buy a Pixel 6a outright (~$559 looks like best price on OzBargain currently), and a 365-day SIM from Boost (for the Telstra coverage; 80GB would be plenty, looks like ~$200 nowadays).

But is there a better deal/approach than the above? Eg:
- How does a "plan" stack up, vs the outright purchase? I've not done that before; where should I look to, and how does the total cost of ownership compare? Any pros/cons to be aware of?

Thanks!

    outright.
getting plan is never a smart move.

Unless you get a $1200 gift voucher and then get reimbursed for most of the monthly cost through work.

  • You can get one for free when you enter in to a plan with a 7/7 Pro via Optus. Sell the 7/7 Pro, cancel the plan and keep the 6a. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/734123

    • Interesting. How confident are you that there is no minimum term for the plan, though? How would the total cost compare?

eg I don't trust them to not try to charge me for the 6a if I cancel after a month.

I'd try and go the P7 if you can, google is doing black Friday deals in about a week. It's got a much better modem which will give you better reception.

The extra few hundred is nothing if you plan on keeping it 4 years like your P3.

    • What does unbranded mean?

  • Plan for how long? If you get on a plan, are you actually willing to use a midrange phones (6a) for 2 or 3 years?
