What Is The Best Parking App to Use in Melbourne?

These are what I have installed so far for off-street parking.
- EasyPark app while I was at Footscray Hospital.
- PayStay app while I was at Port Melbourne.

How many more parking apps are being used around Melbourne? To set up such an app, you'll need to enter your credit details before you can use it. Now that data breaches have been in the news for the last few weeks. I feel a little bit nervous in giving out my credit details to so many companies.

I am wondering why can't there be a common app for all the parking spaces in Melbourne?

  • PayStay and EasyPark are the two I have.

PayStay was the original one for the CBD and some surrounding areas and then they changed to EasyPark. EasyPark seems to not be very user friendly, but the way it charges makes more money for the council. I would assume that the extra money would've been a huge driver in the decision to change apps.

They really need to get their shit together and decide on a single app across the state!

    • At least EasyPark doesn’t need you to load money on it. How does EasyPark charge that makes more money for the council?

      • With PayStay, you press "Start parking" and then when you "End Parking", it calculates the actual time and charges based on that (up to the max allowable for that area) at the end.

Whereas with EasyPark, you have to estimate how long you are going to park for and select that as the set time. Most people would overestimate so that they don't risk getting a fine. If they do come back earlier, there's no refunds. It charges based on the period initially selected. (Those that 'underestimate' the time they park there risk getting a fine if they stay longer). The council wins both ways.

You also do start and end with EasyPark

          • @jm7: Really? I must be using it wrong then!

I had to park in the CBD at the time they changed over, so I downloaded it on the spot and had to try figure out how it worked. At the end, they charged based on the amount of time I specified at the start.

I don't see any option to "End Parking"?

@bobbified: You can definitely end parking and it charges based on how much you used. You can also just extend your parking if you need to park longer. Help page says you just press the button in the wheel to stop the parking.

              • @askbargain: Thanks man! I've give that a try next time. That should save me a few bucks each time!

      • I think that's the main difference. You have to load (i.e. prepay) at least $5 before using PayStay.

  • There are only two apps and you have them already. Both are okay than paying on the machine.

    • Thanks. Good to know. I thought there were more.
