Mozzie Zapper Recommendation

Melbourne weather has dramatically changed in the last weeks and now can’t open the windows/balcony door without getting a 100 mozzie chilling with us in the living room.

We desperately need a practical solution.

Are mozzie zappers practical for indoor use all night every night? Will it get annoying having a bright purple light in a dark room while watching tv? And do they use a lot of power? We already pay too much for power usage.

Are there any other practical suggestion to help us not being eating alive? Don’t think bodily mozzie repellent is a sustainable solution for everyday use at home. So what else do people do?

    Bikies.

    • Flyscreens are the best solution

Add fly screen to your windows…

Mosquito scented candles? …. Repellent candles, not candles made of mosquitos

    • Thank you. I will give it ago. But $5 for 20 hours of use is also not too appealing. That would be about $60 a month if used every night.

What does a mosquito smell like?

Bats like these are common throughout Asia

    • Not liking the idea of running around swinging a tennis racket all night plus that won’t help while sleeping.

      • I missed the part about sleep time. Definitely handy during non sleep hours. If flyscreens on the window is not an option, you could check out portable mosquito nets. But honestly ask your agent to install fly screens. You’re within your rights to do that

        • Even for an apartment complex? It is a one year old building with more than a hundred units. Doubt the owner will entertain that idea and not sure if body corporate will even allow it.

But got me thinking of DIY net on the balcony door that has a cut in the middle to walk thru. Hmmm..

  • mossie coils, been working for me for 60+ years

    • I was looking for something I could use indoors all night. I guess a fly screen linked up is the most practical solution for my requirements. Thank you

      • use the citronella + sandalwood coils, pleasant enuff smell
        works effectively

My cat's breath peels the paint from the walls and would no doubt kill any living creature passing by as it yawns.

Come to think of it, we never see mosquitos…

I dont think there is any electronics or zapper devices for mozzies. Or it be million dollar business.

    • Looks promising but only issue is $28 for “Up to 30 nights (based on 12 hours use per night)”
That would be more expensive than all my other monthly subscriptions combined.

      • Less than a $1 a day to deal with the mozzies that are swarming you…

        • Or $360 a year.. either that is expensive or I’m cheap.

This worked for us. I have it on a timer from 11pm to 6am and no mozzies as we sleep. Refills are about $14 for 2, so about $7 per month.

Mosquito coils sort of work but the smoke is a bit of a worry and an irritant for some people.

    • Sounds good. Do you need one per room? Or one will be enough for a small apartment?

      • Not sure, we only have one near the bed but since using it hardly ever get mozzies in the rest of the house. It's an older place with timber windows and doors so not totally insect proof.

    Thermocell
They work and there’s havks to regas them.
Pads can be bought in bulk on ebay too.

  • The zappers tend to kill non mozzies & the little insects important to the ecosystem.

I feel for you, I got Ross River from a mozzie bite and still suffer over 10 years later. I just don't think the zapper will give you the relief you need.

  • Control the mozzies around your house. You probably have standing water in which they are breeding, so find those spots and fix them so they wont collect water. Consider spraying your outside area with an insect growth inhibitor which will also stop breeding. E.g. TekkoPro.

Trying to kill them is futile because they will always outnumber the amount you can actually kill if they are continuously breeding.

  • I got one of these. They regularly do 20% off or can google coupons:

The jury is still out on it. I plugged it in at the end of last summer and seemed to work well. As it heated up lately, mozzies were in abundance so I moved it away from outdoor area which is what is instructed.

It doesn't repel mozzies, it's meant to attract them, kill them and dent the breeding cycle. That's why you put it away from used areas.

    • Does it not store the mozzies caught? The jury needs a mozzie count! I've heard the ads for this product on the radio and it sounded sus to me.

Yea it does. There's a bunch in there but hard to determine what percentage.

I work away, so also difficult to gauge, but asked the Mrs yesterday afternoon after commenting here whether by moving it had made a difference. She gave a non-committal "yea…well I just hung out washing at 5pm and didn't get eaten".

I had been sitting outside for an hour and had no bites. I'll empty the thing this morning and post a photo.

        Heaps of moths. Few mozzies.

        • That's pretty good. It catches actual mozzies.

          Thank you for sharing :)

  • Buy 2 or 3 mozzie zappers & give them to your neighbours. 😂

We sleep with the ceiling fan on. If you don't have a ceiling fan get a pedestal fan pointing at you - mozzies will find it hard to fly (and land on you) when the fans are on.

    • Us too, very effective when a mozzie has snuck in.

    • I do this in warmer months but it's a bit unpleasant on cold nights. I prefer the idea of killing the mosquitoes not just moving them along so they can regroup
