  • Phison E18 based SSDs, you generally want to aim for the 2TB ones. The main reason is the 1TB ones aren't as well optimised so they don't quite top benchmark as much as the 2TB ones.

    • That's not going to matter in daily use though?

      • +11

But but my user benchmark scoreeeee

      • Yes, but then we all know PCIe gen 3 SSDs are already good enough.

I think normally people went with E18 SSDs because they see all those benchmark figures. The 1TB version's TLC sustained write speed is < 1GBps, whereas the 2TB one is 1.6GBps. So the 1TB version write speed after SLC cache is exhausted is not that good.

  • Thats a fairly good price for gen4 1tb

h0d1. In Black Friday we believe!

  • bought it yesterday from Amazon: $308 - cashback "Up To 7%"

    • Unfortunately it's unlikely you'll get any cashback as it looks like it is sold on Amazon under the 'Computers' product section and Shopback/CashRewards list that as a 0% cashback category

      • I'm ok with that, price is still good

        got $9.81

    • it says upto but did u make sure how much? Cuz the 7% is for amazon devices, clothes and garden things. I suspect its the 3.5% for electronics, either that or 0% for personal computing.

      • +3

idk how much cashback ill get from it, price is good anyway, cashback is just an optional cherry

        • I think cherries come under the gardening product section

      • got $9.81

        • oh damn, nice! im assuming thats the 3.5%?

  • +4

Nice for them to put PS5 compatible in the product page.

  • Nice deal, any 4tb offers?

    • Only $899!

      • Nah the firecuda 530 went for as cheap as 660 from Amazon some moons ago

        • I'm kidding. $899 is way too high.

  • +1

how good is this? compared to 980 pro?

    • Toms Hardware rate it in their top 3. Benchmarks beat the 980 Pro:
      https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/kingston-kc3000-m2-ssd-…

I just bought the 990 Pro as part of the Samsung Edu deal but would have opted for this deal instead if it was around. Under $300 so it's entirely claimable at tax time too.

    • It’s the fastest SSD until 990 Pro comes out next early year.

Great price, bought mine for $155 for 512GB from Umart when it first came out.

      • 990 pro is out now

  • Just checking, does this need a heat sink added?

    • Sony recommends using a heatsink if using in a PS5.

      • What heatsink would people be recommending to go with this to fit into a PS5?

        • PS5 details including heatsink dimensions and images can be found here https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-insta…. Many options to choose from with a range of prices as long as dimensions are met. Other options to investigate are the specially designed PS5 panel covers that cost more such as the Sabrent and Elecgear but if not wanting to go that route then the generic cheaper options will work fine.

  • NV2 isn't fast enough for PS5 right?

    • Sony recommends a minimal read speed of 5,500mbs. This drive may technically work now but there are no guarantees you will not have issues in future if games are designed to meet the minimal requirements.

    • No visible difference for current games but no guarantee for future games.
However, you can always put the games need high speed SSD in the mighty internal storage…

  • For a mid range itx build (5600, 6700xt) are these viable (kc3000/nv2) or are there better options?

    • +1

KC3000 is one of the high end PCIe gen 4 SSDs. NV2, it is a low end PCIe gen 4 SSD. The weird thing with NV2 is that Phison E21 is meant to be an improved version of E19. However, it seems Kingston didn't take advantage of it and actually used it like E19. There is limited real life test data on NV2. There is one user report indicating once the SSD is filled to 50%, its performance drops significantly (since the dynamic SLC cache is smaller) which is a concern. It's just 1 user report though.

Depends on what you want and whether you prefer mainstream branded SSDs.

  • I bought a new Asus Flow X16 gaming laptop and am looking to get a 2TB SSD for the second SSD slot mainly for COD/Steam games, is this a good deal or should I wait till Black Friday sales? What speeds/specs should I aim for? Thanks.

    • What exactly are you after? The best SSD you can get (money is not the primary concern) or budget / cost is a primary concern?

      • Being a avid ozbargainer I'm going after value for money since I'm not in a hurry as I currently have 1TB in the main SSD, but also wanting something that I wouldn't be frustrated with while gaming for not spending an additional $50 on, if it can last me 5 years without any issues.

        • +1

Honestly, anything TLC with DRAM will do the job.

Even this cheaper Kingston NV2 is fine

          https://www.amazon.com.au/Kingston-2280-Internal-SNV2S-2000G…

          • @Agret: Sorry mate, NV2 is DRAMless, and OP already listed it.

        • It's hard to recommend for that laptop because that laptop does support a 2nd PCIe gen4 x4 SSD. Without having access to it, I don't know whether that support is via the chipset or direct to the CPU (likely to be via chipset).

Anyway, on the one hand, high end PCIe gen 4 SSDs like KC3000 means you are using PCIe gen 4 properly. On the other hand, they are generally overkill, especially for games (at least for now). Problem is, while we are not seeing that yet in PS5, could DirectStorage make a big difference? However, even so, does getting a game loaded in 2 seconds vs 3 seconds (or 4 seconds vs 6 seconds) makes a huge difference?

Right now, NV2 is cheapest TLC DRAMless SSD at the moment. Do bear in mind it carries 3 year warranty only. Kingston did NOT bring out the best of E21 controller. Some user reports on its slow down once the drive is filled concerns me. It is unclear whether that's because recovery of SLC has not completely or it is just how that SSD works.

          • @netsurfer: I'm a IT noob, whats the difference between support via the chipset or direct to the CPU for the Asus X16 laptop?

Also should I get a DRAM SSD? I assume DRAM is better?

Since BF sales are just round the corner, I'll be waiting to buy my SSD then. Any 2TB SSD brands/models you would recommend so I can keep an eye out for them? Thanks for your help :)

  • Would this laptop benefit with Kingston KC3000 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD 2048G as Boot Drive ?

    • +2

Not too much. PCI-E 3.0 should be enough for boot drive and running cooler. PCI-E 4.0 is more for video editing or other huge data transfer tasks.

      • Nice .. thanks .. Knew it would be an overkill and was waiting it to go OOS .. will HODL for BF deals :-)

        • +1

Definitely, Amazon may have some deals stacking with Aldi's 10% off Amazon gift cards.

        • +1

From a brief check, that laptop doesn't support PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs. You can still put them in there, except they run at PCIe gen 3 x4 speed. I am basing it on the laptop comes with a Samsung P991a SSD (and I assume if that SSD slot supports PCIe gen 4 x4, Dell would have put one in there).

          • @netsurfer: Thanks for the info .. I'm little confused .. CPU-z Motherboard Bus Specs shows its PCI-Express 4.0 (16.0 GT/s) ..

The laptop came with BC711 NVMe SK hynix 512GB 512.1 GB the boot drive / CrystalDiskInfo Transfer mode - PCIe 3.0 x4 | PCIe 3.0 x4, Standard - NVM Express 1.3

            Secondary slot has GIGABYTE GP-AG42TB 2000.3 GB used for games / CrystalDiskInfo Transfer mode - PCIe 3.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4, Standard - NVM Express 1.3

As per Dell's Storage Specs its mentioned - NOTE: The performance of the PCIe NVMe Gen4 x4 will be limited to PCIe Gen3 x4 bandwidth on the system

was planning to upgrade the boot drive for more Storage (i.e. partitioned)

Can you recommend any drives to get the max/best out of this laptop??

            • +2

@WhyMe20: It is a bit confusing. My interpretation is that while the board and the chipset is PCIe gen 4 capable, the mobile Ryzen APU isn't, at least not for the storage side. My understanding is that mobile AM4 APUs don't support PCIe gen 4. Pretty much all of us don't quite understand why AMD elect to do so, given AMD started supporting PCIe gen 4 on Ryzen 3xxx desktop CPU series. My guess is AM4 socket simply doesn't have enough pins for APU (the GPU part) to operate in PCIe gen 4 mode.

CrystalDiskInfo shows the transfer mode in this format: <current transfer mode> | <transfer mode SSD is capable of>. For example, for my system that's capable of supporting PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs, in CrystalDiskInfo, it shows: PCIe 4.0 x4 | PCIe 4.0 x4. If you like, I can try to put my spare PCIe gen 4 SSD into a Ryzen system that's only able to support PCIe gen 3 x4 (for SSDs) to re-verify.

Anyway, you can verify it by using CystalDiskMark and run it on your Gigabyte SSD. You won't reach 5000MB/s for sequential read.

So, the question comes down to whether you should go PCIe gen 4 x4 SSD. Basically, it comes down to this. How do you feel about Samsung 970 Evo Plus and WD SN750? Also, will there be any "bargain" deal on those? Price wise, NV2 price is good, but we know the performance will degrade once the drive is filled above 50%. The bit I am not sure is whether it is really as bad as the user report I saw (if yes, then it becomes worse than 970 Evo Plus). Problem is, it could be the guy tested right after the drive is filled to 50% (so it could be the SSD is in SLC cache recovery process, which does impact performance until the process ends).

I still suggest getting PCIe gen 4 SSDs because there simply aren't any bargain PCIe gen 3 SSD deals.

              • @netsurfer: Really Appreciate your response .. & Thanks for the insight ..

You are right .. read/write speeds don't reach 5000MB/s on either M.2 slots with GP-AG42TB (did some testing earlier) .. Initially my plan was to use this as boot drive and get a cheaper one for the secondary

Gen 4 drive "deals / bargain" prices are very tempting sometimes & FOMO too…

Just needed a reality check ..thanks once again :-)

                • @WhyMe20: GP-AG42TB is Phison E16 based SSD. It's good you have the 2TB one. E16 SSDs are mid tier PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs. All of them have somewhat over the top TBW. Yours is 3600TBW.

My suggestion is that take it as an advantage that you don't have the need to get PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs so you can really wait for a bargain.

  • Does anyone think that this will go down in price further for Black Friday sales?
