Amazon Delivery Employee Shortage - PSA

I am a regular prime shopper. Have
Approx 50 prime 1 day / 2 day items in the past 3 months.
The delivery service has been excellent, door to door by private Amazon couriers. I rave about the reliability to many. Being in metro Melbourne, I've never had an issue.

Unfortunately, this has come to a halt.
I purchased a $130 item (above threshold(, listed as prime 1 day delivery on Monday 7/11 for delivery on Tuesday 8/11.

At approx 8pm on 8/11 I got an email stating they would not be able to make the delivery and to check the tracking for more details.

To my horror, it showed a tracking number listed to Aramex.
It is now Thursday the 10th of November and the item is just static with Aramex. As the item has been handed over, Amazon are unable to help further. Aramex have never been able to help, nor do they care about a guaranteed delivery.

Rising fuel prices have possibly pushed away the private contractors? Amazon support said they are trying to get more workers.

Bit of a PSA/rant for those who rely on delivery time frames with Jeff.

Every single aramax delivery ive ever had previously known as fastway, i know ironic, guess why they changed their name. Has always been non delivered and sent to a parcel point. I am talking about over 20 orders in 2 years.

    • +1

Somehow they managed a 1.2 star google review.

      • +2

Must be a mistake, they are a solid 1 star

        • +1

Only because you can't give a 0 star.

          • +3

@KSMLJ: Only because you can't give a middle finger

    • +4

      fastway

They had to change it, otherwise false advertising. Only so long you can fool people.

  • +2

I know they give the option when buying multiple items in one transaction to either go with fastest with multiple deliveries or to send all in one go. Most stuff isn’t time critical, so I normally just click send in one go.
They should bring in a “holding bay” (I’m sure there is a much better term but I’m running on minimal sleep), where you could buy things over a 2 week or so period and have it delivered in one go (maybe they even throw a discount to entice)
I know this doesn’t cure your need for instant delivery but it might mean drivers are available to be allocated to those 1-2 day requests. (Is it really a huge deal if a little late)

    Thoughts?

    • Most stuff isn’t time critical, so I normally just click send in one go.

I usually do the same but on two occasions so far I have had 3 deliveries in the same day for items in the same order.
I didn't think it was possible with Amazon's system but I was handed the deliveries directly each time by a different driver.

    • +1

Yea they could implement this in software, where you can just pay for things in your online "shopping cart" which then transfers them to the online "boot" or "delivery van". Then you can confirm delivery after like two weeks.

  • I get Couriers Please whenever I order from Amazon and they are always good. Had bad experiences too with Aramex.

    • Couriers please have always been great for me too

      • +1

I have never once had a parcel successfully delivered by Couriers Please. Every time, I get a text saying it is at a parcel collection point several kilometres away even though I was home to receive it. Seems it depends where you are and who you get "delivering" your package for these companies.

  • I don't think that use of Aramex by default means that Amazon has shortage of delivery people. Amazon offers different tiers of delivery support to sellers, 3rd party courier is one of them (either by choice of the seller or their own warehouse location or when Amazon cannot service the customer's area with its drivers). Even when there was no shortage of drivers in the past, I received a few orders delivered by these courier companies and not Amazon delivery people. Obviously the number was much smaller.

    • shortage of delivery people

Aramex and Amazon pay terribly and wonder why no one wants to work for them

      • Well the purpose of working is to make money, not lose it.

I also use Amazon Prime a lot. really a lot. Since covid really. I have also noticed "delays" to one day deliveries happening more and more.

Amazon better be careful here. The ONLY reason I use Amazon over eBay is so that I can have it delivered when it says I can. I don't mind paying a few dollars more for that. If they start pissing around with that then I'm going straight back to eBay.

    • Same situation and reasoning for me.

    • +2

This but also depending what it is, Amazon has always been easy to deal with for problems with the product or delivery.

      • +1

Yeah thats true. eBay are a nightmare most of the time for warranty stuff. But I have noticed recently Amazon turing more like eBay, and eBay turning more like Amazon.

  • +3

Amazon's delivery lottery of late has made me order from other places where I normally would have just ordered from them.

If it's in the WA warehouse haven't had any issues with next day deliveries coming by the due date so far.

If it's over east the Amazon ETA for most stuff is now showing 3 or 4 weeks (but change delivery postcode to eastern states and its next day so it's in the warehouse). If I'm lucky they'll send via Express Post or maybe Parcel Post, but it could also come by Aramex or Couriers Please (not as bad as Aramex at least) but have no idea who'll they'll use before ordering.
With such a long ETA to cover themselves I could be waiting weeks but it's within their timeframe so can't do much, which I think is pretty crappy for Prime expedited delivery.

Just hope they don't plan on increasing Prime membership price any time soon, I wouldn't be renewing if they did with these delivery times.

    • +2

Yeah I was getting stuff next day in regional Vic when they first launched. Now it's 2 weeks for basically everything.

      Really average.

  • Dragonfly are good here so fast and deliver on weekends next day. If you have a house address and package is ATL they are great. If you have a business address with limited opening hours maybe not so much as this means they cannot deliver early, late, weekends etc

  • Recently I had a delivery with multiple parts missing. As it was delivered from the amazon warehouse, the seller can't do anything but require me to return the item. Never experienced this with Amazon before..

    • I've had this twice recently too

  • +1

Amazon probably needs to buy a fleet of EVs, and preload them each day with packages and just let the drivers come in, hop in drive off and deliver.

    • +1

That would make them employees - bad for them.

  • +4

I used to do delivery for Amazon flex, at the early days we would only get 30-40 deliveries per 4 hour shift, mostly under 40. These days it is 50+. With the fuel price, time taken to complete the job, the car depreciation its just not worth it anymore.

    • +3

Yeah I found the same problem too, and I was progressively getting sent further and further away from the depot.
It was just too much, at 30ish though it was alright, I had a couple where it was around 20 something packages which was awesome for the money.
Once you have 45+ in a four hour block, for a standard hatchback it was getting absurd to fish out packages in the beginning and borderline dangerous since I couldn't see anything.

      • +2

Yes, when i was working, i was only getting 108 base salary, heard its 128 now, but with the increasing fuel charge, it still not worth it

  • Maybe it's just your money

  • I am the guy who do flex with a Tesla. It’s getting harder to deliver for sure .

  • Years ago I ordered a Google Pixel… might have been the first or second one that Google did all under the Google brand. Anyway, long story cut short, ordered through the Google site which was stating 1-2 days delivery time through FedEx. Had it delivered to work (an office building with 5000+ employees, with a loading bay and mail room) had many, many packages delivered. FedEx nearing Christmas got in subcontractors, and the loose unit who got my order just gave it to the Japanese restaurant underneath the building, and just went on his way. Ended up having to get the IMEI blocked by google and they had to send a new phone, got it delivered to home instead and the contractor delivered it to 3 houses up the road and they were nice enough to bring it down the road to my house. It can get shocking this time of year for deliveries.

  • Semi on topic, I love Amazon and use prime and video all the time, it's a good deal for the money. Unfortunately the business development in AU seems like it's been basically zero since day one, the only people I know of who actively use Amazon are ozbargain and reddit nerds. It's just bizarre how this has been managed here.

    • It's super weird, I also only know of bargain hunters and tech enthusiasts that use prime in Aus but like everyone I know in the UK and US have prime.
I think that makes us still lucky that Amazon haven't jacked the price or implemented minimum spend for free shipping.

      • I think this is because Amazon were so late coming here.
We already had robust online shopping. Amazon have to actively get people to switch.

In the UK and the US, Amazon have been there since the start - when people started online shopping, they started with Amazon.

        • True that, but maybe also we have decent access to physical stores

I'm in Perth. If it's not in the Perth warehouse I no longer bother. 2-4 week delivery times now.

Catch is Express Post for $2 extra.
Even Aliexpress gets to Perth 7-14 days.

    • Yeah same here, I ordered some batteries from Amazon and they sent it by Aramex and it took 3.5 weeks to arrive.

      • +4

        Username checks out!

      • +2

Aramex, I refuse to place an order with any seller if I know they will be using Aramex. Spit

I was driving home the other day and there was an suv with no joke, around 50 boxes all over the ground near his boot. As i got closer, i could see they were all amazon boxes. Delivery driver mustve been looking for one specific parcel, was a strange sight.

    • +1

Sadly to say, it is a common sight for amazon drivers

      • I never understood why people always complain that the 'average guy' is always hard done by, overworked & underpaid. Yet at the exact same time, every billionaire that basically drives these slave labour workforces, are applauded and held up on a pedestal.

  • -1

Look at the period we are in.

What is coming up that might cause increase in deliveries or delays

  • +1

Rising fuel prices have possibly pushed away the private contractors? Amazon support said they are trying to get more workers.

Yeah DISHONESTLY trying to get more workers. i.e. I'm signed up to some new job vacancies email. I had to unsubscribe because I was getting daily emails touting professional and high-pay sounding job titles, only to click and find it's just DOZENS of, "Amazon delivery driver." Lying, time-wasting, dogs.

  • +3

Here's some insight. I used to be an Amazon flex delivery driver.

    • Amazon increased packages per shift / block
    • high fuel prices
    • the shift pay isn't that great
    • most amazon flex drivers I speak to usually can't deliver most packages in the 3 or 4 hoir block
    • Amazon doesn't pay for any over time, thus packages not delivered and have to be returned to site. For example if a driver picked up the packages in Regents Park, and their delivery area is Macquarie Park, the driver will have to drive 30+ minutes out of their own time to return the packages for the next day driver. Combine this when their 4 hours shift ended 30 after (last package delivered) then the time going back to base is not paid.
    • with the rise of units, drivers HATE apartment blocks because 1. No one is home (which leads to my previous point), 2. You can't leave the package in a safe place unless the customer makes a note to leave it at X place.
    • unit blocks chews up ALOT of time! From ringing the unit number, finding parking, finding the correct unit. There are so many confusing unit blocks with confusing numbers that I further have to call the customer where it is and more time wasted.
    • if a driver gets an area mainly with houses, they won the shift jackpot.

Many delivery flex drivers come and go, it's a side hustle not a part time or full time job. While some get as many shifts as possible, at the end, the money isn't great, worse now than fuel prices is crazy high.

Drivers can quit based on some or all the reasons I mentioned.

As with any jobs, there's pros and cons and there's people who stay or leave. But imo, people will leave more than stay.

    • They do pay over time at their discretion.

There is money to made out of it.. definitely agree it's not a full time job..but work smart and it can pay ok in bursts.

    • +1

Nightmare if you ended up with areas like mascot, zetland, pyrmont, newtown

Employee shortage? I've been on the wait list for 5 months to fill a flex spot, stuck doing uber eats on the side atm and getting a bit bored of not being able to prebook all my jobs for the day. I doubt it pays near the $40/hr average ubereats pays tho?

    • prebook all my jobs

Probably the worst thing you could do with flex. Best value is picking off surge pricing on the fly.
Surprised you're not activated yet leading into black Friday/Christmas… thought it was all autonomous driving over there anyway?..

      • In the SA group, people from Dec/Jan still not activated, seems some people have been activated in 1-2months but they have friends who nag amazon for them, which is lame for those waiting.

  • Amarex are the freakin worst by far :(

  • Maybe people like taking bathroom breaks like normal humans. Didn't Bezos' housekeepers complain that they weren't allowed to use the toilets in his house either and had to climb through a window to use another one or something. Dude has an odd piss fetish that he likes subjecting onto his employees.

  • I'm pretty luck that AP delivers most amazon orders in my area of NSW.

  • Just wanted to share my experience to balance out the stories here.

Purchased something last night at 8pm, received it at 10am today which is a Sunday. So there doesn't seem to be a shortage, at least in Melbourne. Some how it was free expedited delivery for Prime member too.
