Car Dash Cam Recommendations, Accessible by Phone

What is a good dash cam or car camera that I can buy? One that can record the whole car, front, back 360 degree etc. Preferably it would record video when incident happens and I can get access with my phone. If there is an audio feature it would be good as well.
In terms of installation, do I need a mechanic to install it into my car?

    Viofo a129 Plus Duo

2 cameras. 1 in the front, 1 in the rear. You can access the videos via wifi. They can record audio.

You could also get single unit cameras that record the interior of the car but can also view the rear.

You do not NEED a mechanic but they will surely do a better job. You could find a installer of FB or Gumtree.
I simply plug it into the cigarette socket.

Can't stress enough how amazing having a dashcam is. The sweet taste of justice from catching a hit and run'er is on another level.

While I still recommend Viofo, the last 2 I bought have been DOA….

    • 3 cameras are better

      • I have considered getting another 2 cameras pointed to the left and right.

I meant one pointing into the cabin.

          • @jv: Check out Vortex Radar on YouTube.

If you want to capture licence plates, what you really need is an ALPR Unit. One that has IR emitter and receiver for night-plates, and a high-quality telephoto for day-plates.

In terms of surveillance, you'll want to try to capture 360'. That means using Widescreen cameras. Potentially something like one camera on each of the (four) sides. Preferably these can be integrated into the design of the car. Such as; 90' rear-window-corner (louvre) pointing forwards; 90' side mirror pointing backwards; 120' top-front-windshield; 120' top-rear-window.

The low-hanging fruit is this, and build it even the base level cars. Each car can have a separate computer (cheap ARM Cortex A55) to handle the streams, and records to a User Removable Harddrive (eg 256GB in the glovebox) and has a cheap Wifi module to stream if desired also to an external source. Just make it basic and modular. People can upgrade the cameras, lenses, chipset, or hard-drive if they want it as long as the infrastructure is there.

Not sure why there's no movement for it. It's all cheap hardware, which more than will justify itself and the costs. In fact, large and rich insurance companies around the world would love it. Not sure why they haven't mandated this, and make it necessary for new car sales from 2020 onwards, or maybe 2025-onwards.

@Kangal: I might just build my own.

I want a camera that records the back, front as well as the driver/passenger windows, in case something happens I get it on record.

Following thread because my A129 couldn't handle the Australian summer and boot loops when it overheats and need recommendations.

As for your questions, most 2 channel dash cams will record sound, have incident detection and/or a button that saves video when you press it, and have a very wide degree of coverage (side is usually not seen with front and back cameras). Not sure about phone thouhg. Depending on the car, installation is usually just a matter of tucking the cable under the cars trim. Some pieces might need to be removed but you wont know until you try it unless there's tutorials somewhere for your cars trim removal.

With all whose things you after, you need to spend over 1k for the camera, LTE module, extended battery for dashcam, also a data sim for push event message to your phone.

Sounds like you want to buy one of the Goolge or Apple map camera setup's as it has 360' support otherwise you will have to DIY to get 360' support.
