Pizza Peels - Ooni Brand or Other?

I’ve ordered an Arrosti gas pizza oven, and am currently looking for pizza peel(s) to go along with it. I am liking the look of the Ooni perforated one, as it has ridges on it that look like they would assist with helping the pizza slide off easily.

Can anyone who has one, vouch for it and its premium price tag? Or is it overkill and I’m better off with something cheaper? And do people typically have an additional turning peel or should I not bother and just turn by hand using the launch peel?

Personally, I believe you always need 2 peels. 1 wood for launching, 1 stainlesss for turning and retrieval. I've never bothered with a turning peel, it's a piece of cake to turn by hand. Both off ebay for ~$20.

edit: Just saw the price of the Ooni branded one - yikes!

    • Have seen plenty of wood ones, and aluminium ones with wood handles. Do you have any issues with the wood getting burnt/singed?

Ooni is exy, yes.. which is why I’m curious as to whether the ridges on it (that others dont seem to have), actually matter.

      • Nope.

The whole point of the wooden peels is the pizza won't stick and is easy to slide it. Wood awkward to retrieve a pizza however.

agree, 2 peels needed, wood and stainless.
      Turning peel not needed.

What you will soon learn (I learnt the hard way).
      1. Make the pizza on the bench, dont put it on the peel until your almost ready to put in the oven
      2. Otherwise chance of sticking increases
      3. Stainless peels - pizza sticks easy
      4. Wooden peels - not as sticky.
      5. Sprinkle semolina on pizza peel before placing pizza on it
      6. Make sure pizza stone is real hot

I have an ooni 12 inch and an ooni peel.
Fantastic pizza. The peel works well.

      As for Keglands one.
I know the history of their store, their morals are compromised, but looking at their copy of the Ooni, maybe I would buy and try it. Ooni is overpriced (but makes fantastic pizza)

off topic - You sure about Kegland in the Kegland v Keg King dispute? I have the opposite view.

  • Don't Know but Kegland sell these for $50 with a lot of spin talk. No doubt you'll find cheaper again.

    • Thanks, seen that one but shipping is pretty steep, unfortunately.

Just ordered this one and a turning peel. Hopefully will be able to give it a shot over the weekend and can report back. Though it'd be my first time with an Ooni, so mightn't be able to differentiate between user inexperience and useful tools.

    • I have the same as this, but from AliExpress.
Works well enough. Also bought a turning peel at the same time.

Wood would likely work slightly better regarding non stick, but this can be more a one peel to do both jobs, as opposed to wood where you need a metal peel more easily get the pizza back out

  • I bought one from Bunnings, works just fine. Would have gone with a cheaper one at BBQ's Galore, but my local was out of stock.

Nothing makes one pizza peel better than any other, go for what is cheapest and available.
