Yes we looked at the other 40mm Samsung's and then got the Garmin Vivoactive 4S mainly for it's much longer battery life. I know they don't directly compete with each other but happy to lose some smart features to gain the much better battery life.
Vivoactive 4S is currently $239.20 in The Good Guys Click Frenzy deal with $20 store cash and 10% cashback in a few hours time.
There's also the issue of ergonomics. 42mm is still a decent size for a watch and will obviously be lighter and less bulky than the 46mm version

Anyone know how the black holds up to scratches?
The black holds up extremely well, I've had mine since its first release, wear it daily, and knocked it a few times but not a single scratch on the black.
Have been using it for a year now.
I used cheap chinese ones before this.
No regret at all.
Only issue is with battery as it lasts only for 1.5 day. So, I charge it in the morning before going go work.
That's battery is quite good. Mine only last about 18 hours need to charge every night before go to bed. I don't use the watch much either.
That sounds like even more of a hassle than an automatic mechanical watch.

I read reviews about thr pixel watch. The design is good but for the money, this is better.
With discount, galaxy watch is much cheaper than Pixel one.
Have the Pixel Watch - i don't wear it to bed so the battery lasts me all day even with AOD on.
Pixel watch is more fun, but Galaxy watch is more tested.
Pixel watch is twice the price, and I don't feel it's worth it, slower processor, larger screen bezels poorer battery life.

My 46mm Samsung frontier S3 is still going strong after 7 years. Had to change the battery after 5 year mark, Lost it's waterproofing, but totally well worth $600 I paid back in 2015.
How did you change the battery?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic share similarities in design, but the Classic model is a little bulkier and larger, whilst also offering a rotating bezel, while the standard model is available in more colours and has a sportier build.
The user interface is the same across the two models - though the Classic model of course has the extra features that come with the rotating bezel - and they offer the same hardware and sensors.
