I'm (profanity) sick of the RRP posts. Well, I'm more sick of hearing about them than anything.

Series S. Best next gen console. 500 RRP. 479 at these three retailers. It's been lower before. It will be lower again. Hell, it was lower just a couple weeks ago. But it's below RRP so, I guess, I mean, if RRP constitutes a deal, especially when the RRP has in some cases gone up $50, then surely, $20 less than RRP is a deal too, no?

Legitimately though, pair the Series S with one of these bad boys https://www.amazon.com.au/SanDisk%C2%AE-Ultra-Shift-Flash-Dr… (or wait for a better deal, this is just a name brand, and 20 bucks at the present) and you've got a serious setup. PS5 has 825gb, 200 odd out the box is gone, and then of the 630ish left over, mine at least is missing another nearly 200 of "other" files, all of a sudden your 364gb available storage on the Series S ain't such a hinderance when it's closer to 500gb than the PS5. You can use the USB for storage of Xbox One, 360, and OG games and play them directly off there, while only Series S versions need to be on the internal drive to run. Games in my experience so far, load significantly faster off the USB on the Series, than the built in drive of Xbox One so in that respect, it's still a significant stepup in speed, even if not quite as good as the built in drive.

Step 2; get yourself over to https://gamr13.github.io/ and install some emulators. The PS2 emulator is a box of piss to install these days, no real setup beyond telling it where your files are, and picking what size (4:3/16:9) and resolution you want the thing to output at. Games will run happily and speedily off your little USB mentioned above, I myself have a 256gb at the present loaded up on the Series X with all the PS2 games I want, and a 64 in the bedroom on the S with around 25 top tier titles. For Ratchet and Clank's 20th anniversary, Sony recently announced they would put 5 of the old games on the PS+ Premium service, including the original trilogy finally…for countries other than Australia, as it's streaming only and we don't have it here. Meanwhile, me and the missus have run through Ratchet 1&2 a good couple times in full fat 4K on the Series X over the last year and a bit via this. Xbox is a better PlayStation than PlayStation at this point.

Step 3; go get a cheap sub to Game Pass, naturally. Further, don't sleep on sites like Eneba, who sell international codes for Xbox games. You don't need to make another account or swap regions or go through any bullshit like you do on PlayStation, you simply buy the code, and activate it. Some countries, like Argentina and Turkey, the cheapest of cheap, will need a VPN just once to activate the code, but it's only the once and you're done. There is a shitload of insanely cheap games on there, Saints Row 4 and Gat out of Hell is 1.44 for the two pack https://www.eneba.com/gb/xbox-saints-row-iv-re-elected-gat-o…, you can get 3 Assassin's Creed games (4, Unity, Syndicate) for 4.25 https://www.eneba.com/gb/xbox-assassins-creed-triple-pack-bl… (was under 3.50 the other day), EA's lil family 3 pack (NFS 2015, Unravel, PvZ GW2) is 1.72 https://www.eneba.com/gb/xbox-ea-family-bundle-xbox-live-key… and the list genuinely just keeps going on and on.

So in conclusion, while many of y'all are having a sook over whether or not RRP constitutes a deal, you're sleeping on what is objectively the best value deal in next (re: current) gen gaming. Series S is affordable (relative to other game consoles), it's in stock, small and compact and cute and just a lovely looking thing, it has an incredible lineup of backward compatible games which is only further bolstered by the genuine selling point that is it's emulation ability. Is this the best deal on the Series S? No. Is the Series S itself a great deal, hells yes it is, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

For under 500 bucks (including the 128gb USB), you have got yourself here just about the best Christmas present I as a gamer could imagine. Thank you for your time.

Mod note: The following was added to the deal post 18 hours after submission. There is a reason why OzBargain does not allow deal posters to switch stores domains. Users did not vote for a different deal from a different store at a different price. Please post a new deal if a significantly different price was found from another store. Please see this associated deal from BIG W eBay for eBay Plus users. Non-eBay Plus users can purchase at $455.05 with code BRANDSOFF5.

Obviously Deva's deal is better which is why I've just left this without change up until now, but I just saw the lil BRANDSOFF5 deal and that it brings the Series S down to 455.05, which is pretty swell for no eBay Plus being required. Obvs delivery will bring it back up to around 460, but that's still nearly 20 bucks off the original deal here. 455 for the Series S is well worth it. Regardless of what sorts of deals you could (and easily at that, I've seen it) get on the second hand side, for the price, the Series S is well worth the investment. I will remove this on the 14th when the BRANDSOFF5 deal ends, assuming the other stores are still 479, and revert it to that.

A mod can likely fix this if seen, but it won't let me change the store from Amazon to Big W, so I'll just put the Big W link here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/125370660843

You need a medal for the description

    • +4

Yep. Voted for the description (except for the strong f word lol)

      • I just find the use of semi-colons unforgivable.

    • +11

I stopped reading after "Series S. Best next gen console." It got better?

      • +4

Gamer™ energy is strong in this post.

OZRRP should make awards for people like you! Great find.

    calm down son

  • +6

Got one used from marketplace for $200

    • One S or Series S? Big difference there. It'll be interesting whomever stupid enough to sell a Series S at $200 when all the latest gen consoles are so in demand.

      • +1

I got series S for 250. Runs like a dream.

      • +2

I've seen quite a few Series S going for between $250-300, not hard to believe that they could snag a good deal or haggle the seller down to $200.

      • +1

Picked up one for around 280 on ebay sans controller. Killer system for 1080p gaming

        • +1

I got a Series S around this time last year as I was getting sick of waiting for the Series X. Only paid $220 for it (technically $320 but I used a gift card). Funnily enough I got the Series X merely a few weeks later, and people know (and are likely bored of the story) as I set the Series S up in my main lounge room set up and the Series X in my spare room…. I continued to game on the Series S for months!!! I did switch them around a few months later. I learned about the emulation stuff back in June/July… I still haven't tried it out yet (too scared in case something goes wrong lol).

          • @hawktalk: @hawktalk: Nice man. I also have the series x in lounge for 4k. The series s is pretty nice in the HT room on my 1080p projector for media (kodi, Netflix & Amazon) and the odd gaming sesh.

Overall its a great deal sub $300

      • +1

I got mine for 380 and this was last year lol.

Series S is still heavily overlooked, which, for us, is a great thing. Easy deals for dirt cheap gaming.

        • Throw in the gold to game pass trick and you could be into next gen with new games to play each month for 3 years for something like $500, crazy value.

      • Lol series s yes but no controller

    • +1

Yeah bought 18 months ago for $300 with an extra controller. I'd go 2nd hand. Also a lot of the game pass games use resolutions/fps of sub 1080p- same as the xbox one base model

    • Just messaged a few people on Gumtree/Marketplace saying I'll take theirs for $200 if they get no bites.

We'll see what happens - thanks! I'm keen for an emulation station.

      • It was without controller but $250- $270 should be possible

$431 from BigW on eBay if you have eBay Plus and use "PLUSFLASH2"

    • +6

The Dukes description with your deal. A perfect marriage 💏

    • +1

      @deva, you the real MVP

  • Don't these have the gimped HDD and you might as well pony up and pay for the series X

But totally agree great for emulation

Although these have been as low as $399 so far from a deal

    • +1

Series S has SSD storage. It is just less than the Series X. Still fast, not a HDD

      • But it requires the same Seagate expansion which is $250-300 to keep playing the same modern titles ? So might as well just pay more for the series X unless you just want to use to play play emulation which then you might get a raspberry pi

        • CF Express adaptors exist to use existing m.2. 2230 nvme drives. The drives are a bit pricey though, but could be cheaper than the seagate expansion.

    • +2

No they don't have a gimped HDD, they have the same storage as the Series X just smaller.

  • I'm a PS5 owner but I absolutely agree with this being the best value in current gen gaming. If I could justify it, I'd get a Series S as my side console for emulated games.

  • +1

    Language

  • With a cheap portable HDD for the 2013-2020 games & any NBN plan, the storage size isn't too bad.

  • +1

Would recommend, got one second hand for $300 and love it. Could use more space but honestly, haven't played all the games I've downloaded from the gamepass

    • +1

Can use a HDD as cold storage which I have been doing, takes like 5-10 minutes to move over a big AAA game (50GB-100GB) since we're all tigharses it's a lot cheaper doing it that way and just. Can play Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One titles natively off the HDD as well so there's that, only Series S and X games must be played of internal. But like you said it would still be nice for more space internally.

      • How do you choose the storage location?
I've added an old 256Gb SSD to my Series X and it's just added that volume to my total capacity. Do I need to change the format to be a portable drive rather than permanently attached?

Also OP's links to Eneba say they're Latin America only. It would seem that they can't be added to my Australian account?

  • Not the best deal, but damn, that's a thorough guide.

  • +1

Wasn't even considering one of these until I saw the PS2 emulation. Bought one secondhand straight away.

Is the Series S itself a great deal, hells yes it is, and I'm tired of pretending it's not.

I don’t even need to pretend. It’s not. It’s not really all that tiring for a couch potato

  • Nice Description!

  • Possible to run a Switch emulator on this?

    • +1

Nope. Can run Wii though, which is pretty swell, get your Mario Kart and Smash Bros fix at least.

  • Big fan of the XSS

  • Series S is like a leap between generations…

    Wtf?

100+ upvotes on the Gimpbox Series Shit for a measly $20 off?

It's not even the cheapest price!

Has anyone upgraded from a One X to a Series S? I'm still running a One X and am pretty happy with it, especially as my gaming is pretty casual and not that frequent. Anything that I'm missing out on apart from quicker load times? Big drawback for me on this one is the lack of a disc drive as my One X is also my Blu-ray player.

Forgot to mention every movie and tv show on torrenting sites included in deal as well if we are using piracy programs as an upsell.

    • Pirating things you can currently buy, isn't something I personally do.

I could show you my USB of PS2 ROMs at the moment and you'd notice things like the GTA trilogy, the 2 Star Wars Battlefronts, various other Star Wars games, Bully, Max Payne, TimeSplitters, and many more, games that I love to death, are not on there, because the second they were available as back compat or updated versions to purchase, I did.

I have zero problem with someone pirating Vice City Stories for example, when it came out in 2006, and only ever was digitally released on the PS3, which itself is an absolute nightmare to log into these days, with them requiring ridiculous verification codes and whatnot (Google it if you've not been on a PS3 in forever, same goes for the Vita, it's a real (profanity) to log in now). Otherwise it's hunt down a PSP or PS2 disc and play it on shitty ancient hardware.

Orrrrr, I could run it at 4K with save states and all sorts of enhancements on my Series X/S, as they give me no other option.

And that's from a big company like Rockstar. At least with things like Simpsons Hit and Run, I understand the rights issues behind it being hard to resell in 2022, these assholes however have sold nearly 200 MILLION copies of GTA 5 and couldn't spring for the complete soundtrack in their supposed "Definitive" rereleases of the GTA trilogy. Frankly, they don't deserve your money.
