Any tips for a beginner?
Do ppl use go pros? Gymbals?
Where do U get background music from?

Thanks everybody for the advice/ comments so far.
Only starting off as a hobby for now.
Am aware of some videos from YouTube affected by wind etc.

Cheers

You'll need a USP that sets you apart from every other vlogger, especially those well established that have been doing it for a very long time and amassed a following.

Beyond that or if it's just for fun, it depends how far you want to go and your budget. You can go from your mobile phone in your pocket already to basic GoPro clone on a selfie stick to full GoPro kit with modded accessories (lights, external camera, battery packs, gimbals etc) to a $100,000+ 8K RED camera.

You'll want to consider how you are going to edit the videos and/or employ someone to do so. Again, consideration on what's your style and trademark themes etc.

Plenty of channels around that have a big following and only use a phone camera. Wouldn't spend money on a camera specifically for this until you have been doing it a while and the need for a dedicated camera outweighs the costs involved.

Youtube has copyright free music you can use.

    Have good content

    What are you vlogging about?

"Just for fun" is going to get you nowhere.

Forget black Friday sales and equipment. If you want to be successful, you need:

    • A topic people are actually interested in
    • A target market who are actually going to give up their time to watch it
    • Great personality and communication skills
    • Dedication to consistently create 20+ videos before you expect any type of traction
    • Learn how to edit well

Work on this before you spend a cent on equipment. If you don't, all the gear will sit gathering dust in the corner.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but its reality check.

People like the idea of being a vlogger, but most can't do what it takes.

Good on you for thinking harder on this than OP. Imagine having Google at your fingertips and being "idk where free music comes from halp OzB"

    • Thanks for the advice -
Got an idea and can do endless videos
I'm working on the script and pace atm, but just need to look at the things like editing well/background music etc etc

  • It's all about editing and marketing ;)

Currently, to gain traction fast on Youtube, you need to produce "Shorts" :/ That then link back to a channel of relevant stuff …

This will change again when Youtube release something else they want to promote!

    Have big bobs

    • Yeah. Once you get all the those followers and start getting mobbed in public a stalker will surely be next. You’ll need a big bob for security, two is better.

  • As others have mentioned, you need a story/theme. "Just for fun" needs more focus.

Almost as important is a good editor. Watch this from FaZe Rug (YouTuber) and see as an example of just how much editing goes into a great product. Replicate this as a minimum.

Or watch these as a different (yet compelling) examples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qVyVFJtd0w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqg8RehNxTA&t=341s

    Good luck!

    • OP is just starting out, can't expect them to replicate professional-tier editing. Yes,a fast paced and high degree of editing will help with audience retention but it depends on the pacing of the videos and of course OP's level of editing skills.

Producing interesting and relevant content with good video and audio will help OP the most.

Totally agree with the task of replicating professional-tier editing like I've suggested, but if OP truly wants success he should spend time looking at the editing component of the vlogs from a whole range of people who've assembled a great team behind them. Otherwise it'll get you some petrol money and that's it. For a massive outlay, it'd be a waste IMO.

Edits, timing and background music is often overlooked. It can be argued that the best vlog content creators aren't necessarily the ones with the greatest topics/commentary etc, but have a combination of video, sound and editing that grab and hold onto your audience.

    • haha - at this point just like anyone to provide feedback

Just start with your phone OP, you will find your thing!

Use your phone (at first), and invest in some decent lighting solutions (e.g. ring light). Soft lighting and eliminating shadows really elevates your footage and is very affordable. If you like doing it, then go ahead and invest in better camera, etc.

    • Definitely, good lighting goes a long way. Natural lighing works well too!

Get a good microphone, especially if you will be v-logging in a noisy or windy environment. Incoherence very quickly kills off followers.

    • +2

A clip-on/lavalier microphone will usually be plenty.

I’m not sure, but using google for ‘how do I start a vlog’ seems the first thing to do. There will be plenty of vloggers wanton to share their wisdom for likes and advertising revenue.

Casey Neistat has made a number of videos about his vlogging style/equipment/storylines that have influenced many of the bigger vloggers on Youtube, well worth a look.
