Should I Get a 1TB M.2 SSD or a SATA SSD, or Less Storage M.2 + a SATA?

Planning on building a budget build soon, once I got to the part where I'm researching how much storage I want, I decided on a 1TB m.2 nvme and needed one of very good quality as I will store both files and games on it and i dont want it to potentially fail, so a samsung 970 or 980 was one of my choices but its too expensive.

500GB is too little, and a SATA drive is a little slower than an m.2.

  • Should I spend that much more money on a 1TB nvme?
  • Or is the performance not much different than a SATA SSD? (not talking about r/w speeds)
  • Or I could do both, add a 250-500 m.2 and say 500-1tb sata ssd?

    SATA is enough

    Intellectuals do both

SATA SSD is perfectly sufficient. Vast majority of people and applications/games will not going to notice the speed difference.

    • Awesome, so how about boot time? Is it similar?

Maybe 3 seconds difference. It's nothing.

        • Thats reassuring. Thank u very much

I think there is a tiny bit of a latency when you use SATA instead of NVMe for the OS drive. Whether you notice it or not it’s hard to say.
I’d go NVMe for boot just for the extra responsiveness

@FireRunner: That's fair, but when you're on a budget and the choice is between 500 GB NVMe and 1TB+ SATA then I think latter makes more sense. OP can always upgrade to an NVMe drive in future for much cheaper anytime.

          • @FireRunner: I did also think about that according to online opinions.

I thought of something like a 128 or 250gb NVMe for boot and 1 tb SATA.

@LuslecGrace: You probably want 500GB. Lower capacity tend to be poor value

              • @FireRunner: That and if you're using Windows it will chew through that 128 GB in not time. Even 256 GB may not cut it, depending on what applications you're installing (and how you're installing them).

              • @FireRunner: Ah I understand. Thanks.

dont want it to potentially fail

Try to budget in at least one backup for any critical data. Everything can and will fail, it's just about when. If only one backup, best if it's online (in case of e.g. house fire).

    • I do have 2 seperate online backups in case of a fail, but it would be much better if the drive doesn't fail on me

1TB M.2 and get OneDrive to give you an additional 1TB in the cloud. OneDrive works great for PC or Mac, as long as you have constant access to internet.

Hmm, the price of an NVMe is pretty much comparable with an SATA SSD, and the speed is much higher. That should be no surprise, since we are talking about the same basic chips most of the time.

Get a minimum of a 1TB NVMe that can do 3500 (which will make it 6x the SATA) and if you need more storage later you can get another NVMe, or a SATA SSD. Pay attention to the 'SSD Endurance' value and don't aim to fill the disk

I would get faster M.2 boot drive, kinda ok M.2 SSD for files and large HDD if you need more space. Most motherboards can support 2 * M.2 drives now, at least one at PCIe 4.0 4x
    Even my $85 B550-DS3H has 2 NVMe slots ; PCIe 4.0 4x + PCIe 3.0 2x

I use below setup, and prices were when I got them a while ago

    Seagate FC510 500 GB $80 = Boot
    WD SN550 1 TB $110 = Files
    WD WD80EAZZ CMR 8 TB $195 = More files

    • It feels like prices are more now? Or I just need to look propely for a sale here or there haha.

Since im on a budget, i can't afford to buy 2 m.2's, at most i could scourage for a low storage boot drive then a sata. HDD isn't important at the moment as all i'll be doing is gaming and just very light editing and the such.

Aren't SATA drives more expensive than NVMe now ? It was like that when I checked lastly. Also, modern games will use 100s of GB for the installation though. I keep them in HDD. What is your CPU & MB ?

        ex: Recent good deal SN570 1TB NVMe $110 : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/729938
look for such deals, they are plenty

        • Depends on which brand of SATA and NVMe ur comparing, I usually refer to the high quality ones like samsung.

Yeah im planning to wait for BF or maybe even click frenzy deals to check some sales out, might get something that will not break my wallet!

          Got a 5600x and a b550m pro-vdh wifi (has 2 m.2 slots)

Similar to mine (5600x + B550M-DS3H), I haven't looked for SATA after my last PC, I used to buy "Crucial BX500".
I mean even higher performance NVMe from Good brands were cheaper than SATA, not sure about these days. My go to was "WD SN550" until they change the chip.
