  • Where do they get the OLED panel from? LG?

    • Probably not since it doesn't support HDMI 2.1 or 120 Hz which is pretty key when getting an OLED…

Likely a rebrand of some Chinese mass produced unit than their own custom designed and manufactured TV.

      • +5

The panel is definitely 120hz native and most likely from LG. The lack of HDMI 2.1 inputs is a decision made by Metz and not related to the panel.

        • If that's the case, it's an incredibly stupid way to gimp the device.

          • +2

@Hybroid: Most likely a decision based on their budget. HDMI 2.1 also requires a faster processor.
Theres a lot of other TVs out there with 120hz and lack of HDMI 2.1 to help keep the price down.

HDMI 2.1 would've helped this TV compete with the other OLEDs on the market but I doubt we would've seen them priced as low as they were on the latest deal.

            • @jsediv: Sorry for the (probably) stupid question: what's the big advantage of HDMI 2.1?

              • +2

@liongalahad: Advantages of HDMI 2.1 are mostly for gamers.
4K 120hz, Variable Refresh Rate and Auto Low Latency

The latest "next-gen" consoles support HDMI 2.1 and most people purchase a display to get the most out of their device.

Having owned a TV with HDMI 2.1 and an Xbox Series X, I didn't really make use of the features.
When using the Series X in 4K 120hz mode, the games that supported the high refresh rate were actually degraded in graphics quality. Most use dynamic resolutions which lower the render resolution of a game and keep the frame rate a priority.
I didn't like the decrease in graphics quality so I stuck with 4K 60hz which is available with HDMI 2.0

      • I dont think there is any chinese mass produced oled tv panels. Its either lg or now samsung as well.

      • I can see HDMI 2.1 in the settings on the 65 inch Metz, but I do not have any 2.1 equipment to test it.

    • +2

Yes the panel is most likely LG as Skyworth use LG panels in their TVs.
The Metz mentions S81 for the panel in the "about" section of the TV which could be reference to a Skyworth model.

  • Hi Op.
How many watts does the 65 use in its default setting? and how many watts when set up correctly?
    Cheers

    • I don't have a way to measure this, sorry. Hopefully someone else can answer this for you

  • Anybody else got there opinion on best picture settings?

    • I've just followed jsedivs settings but gonna play around to try and fix black crush

      • Are the default options any good?

      • I've made some updates to my settings including black levels to help fix black crush

        • What is black crush?

          • @BargainMe: Black Crush is when details are lost in darker areas. Typically shadows.
Raising the "black level" setting can help but raising it too much will cause blacks to appear dark grey which defeats the purpose of OLED technology.

            • @jsediv: I'm surprised that's a thing, I thought the black blacks were the best part of an OLED

              • @BargainMe: It's quite common on OLED displays. Not an issue for most people as the detail lost is quite minimal.
                Some more information here

  • Thanks a lot @jsediv for everything related to this tv. I have a 65” model and didn’t really need to go into the service menu to adjust the rgb gain and offset.

Am I on a different firmware?

    • When I set my colour temperature to WARM and adjust the gain/offsets via the quick settings panel, the changes are made as expected but after the TV goes into standby it reverts WARM to USER.
The values are still the same but now applied to the USER preset which is much cooler compared to WARM.

I have a colorimeter on the way and will update my spreadsheet with the most accurate settings once it arrives in about a week.
I'll look into creating an .icc profile for anyone using the TV as a monitor or if they'd like to use it with Kodi but I can't guarantee it'll improve your colour accuracy as each panel is slightly different.

    • Sounds great! Looking forward to seeing your results

    • +1

You're a God amongst men mate

  • +2

Colorimeter arrived early and I've done a quick calibration to achieve a D65 (6500k) whitepoint. Will look into more thorough calibration when I get time but overall, I'm very happy with the quick results. Refer to my google sheets for the updated settings.

These settings were calibrated for dark room viewing (80nits target) but feel free to set the brightness to suit your needs.

I measured the TV brightness at 100 brightness with an approx. 70% white window and the results were 287nits in SDR which is surprisingly higher than I was expecting. In comparison; the LG C2 reaches 353nits with a 50% window and 178nits with a 100% window according to Rtings.

Although; this was measured with the settings menu open which seems to brighten the screen. After closing the settings menu the brightness dropped to 170-190nits. Most likely due to burn-in prevention features or APL which can't be turned off on this TV.

Give the settings a go and let me know what you think. Just keep in mind it may look "wrong" initially as your eyes adjust to the 6500k white point.

They look good on my panel! Thanks mate!

      • Great to hear! I have some new, more accurate settings in my spreadsheet labelled as "HCFR Calibration".

I was able to achieve an almost perfect Gamma of 2.2 with these settings (90% white at 2.15). Greyscale had an average dE of 0.6 which is exceptional and RGB values measured 255,255,255 perfectly.

The colours are fairly accurate. Saturation is as close as I could get. The only issue is the tint/hue as greens are slightly cooler than they should be. This could be an easy fix with the TV HUE settings but they're greyed out on my set and haven't figured out a way to enable it.

If you'd like to give these settings a go, make sure every setting is as per the spreadsheet.

I also applied these settings to Dolby Vision Dark and Dolby Vision Bright (with Brightness:100 and Gamma:Bright)

        • Hi, is your latest calibration setting suitable for medium light room, or only dark room? Thanks for your reply.

          • @iamskywriter: It was calibrated for a dark room but you can increase the brightness to 100% if you need to.
If its still too dark, you can set the gamma to bright

        • This looks good also, didn't like the contrast so adjusted it slightly (just 2 click up) otherwise it looks way better than outside the box!

          • @verygoodplayer: Yeah I had a difficult time with the contrast. An extra two clicks wont throw anything off other than the peak whites. Glad you’re happy with the results!

After using these settings for a few hours and switching back to the default presets you can see how over saturated and blue the default presets are

  • Is it possible to turn the four orange lights at the bottom of the TV off?

    • Pretty sure these are related to google assistant, there is probably a setting in the TV somewhere. These aren't on for me so I can't say for sure.

      • Yes, there is a slider switch on the back near the inputs to turn the remote assistant on/off. Assistant on turns off the lights. If you mean you want to turn both the light and the assistant off, then I don't know.

    • +1

Not too sure, sorry but I covered mine with the Govee Ambilight camera.

  • I'm just trying to calibrate my TV to the recommended settings:
    * 11 Point White Balance Correction: how do you do -1 or +1? My only options are to pick a number between 0 and 100
    * Advanced Settings: What is ALLM: ON (Gaming)? I don't have this option at all

    • For the 11 point white balance, the -1 and +1 should be made to the default values. Maybe you have a different firmware than me?
The ALLM is an HDMI 2.1 feature which will have to be activated in the setup section of the settings menu. Can't remember where exactly.

Are you using an external player or the inbuilt android tv?

      • I've just been using inbuilt Android TV. It seems like when watching a Dolby Vision show on Netflix it changes the settings again.
I'm not even sure how to check the firmware version, I can see Software Version but I think that's just the Android version 🤷🏻

      • I had a further look, I used something connected through HDMI and the ALLM setting showed up.
Have you tried watching anything with Dolby Vision? When a Dolby Vision show is playing it doesn't actually look like you can change the Picture Mode to User

        • You may need to change the picture mode through the service menu while playing dolby vision content or "apply to all sources" in the service menu

  • Anyone had any luck playing Dolby vision through plex correctly?

    • I play Dolby Vision through Kodi but it seems to buffer when streaming even though my connection is fast enough.
Playing DV directly via USB has no issues (Nvidia Shield > Kodi)

      • I might be a little bit more specific in case anyone can help. My set up is plex on a shield tv pro connected to the TV. If I stream Dolby vision rips from my computer to plex on the shield tv pro it will play correctly in hdr/DV. As soon as I try to play the media from the media server on the shield tv pro itself it won't play correctly.

Edge user case but hopefully someone has some suggestions

  • Just an update for anyone lurking:

TV is still working fine. Still no signs of burn-in. HDR doesn't work properly sometimes and appears very dim so I only use SDR and Dolby Vision which both work flawlessly.
Metz aren't for sale in Australia anymore but if you're looking at the Kogan OLEDs, they're most likely to be the same rebranded Skyworth OLEDs with LG panels.

    • You're lucky, mine shit itself and died

      • oh damn! Any luck with their warranty?

  • Hi Everyone,

My Metz OLED Tv has been stuck in a loop for last 7 days. Every time I turn it on it comes up with message and doesn’t matter what I press it turns off automatically and when turned on after few hours still come up with this message that tells me that is calibrating and would take 90 mins and ask me to press OK. Have tried few troubleshoots but no success. Any suggestions on how to fix it before I book in a repair job?

    Thanks

    • Have you tried unplugging it from the wall for a while?

  • +1

Tried everything but then someone sent me a software that I had to put on a USB stick and then plug it into the tv to update and reset it but it worked
    Thanks

    • Do you know what version the firmware is and mind sharing it for others? Would be good to have here incase someone has a similar issue in future

  • +1

I was sent a zip file with that software and instructions. I’ll see if I can share it here as it’s on my work computer
    Thanks

  • I dont know how to post it here but it was it was called MstarUpgrade_no_tvcertificatetvconfig_XXXX.bin but I can email it to someone if needed. Thanks
