When Do You Sell on Your Old Laptops and Tablets and Where?

Hi,

I'm just asking out of curiosity.

I have a lot of old stuff that has been kept in good condition but realistically, it's just long in the tooth now.

E.g. MacBook air 2009, iPad 5th gen, surface pro 4, pixel 4 xl.

Gumtree and Facebook marketplace seem the best places to sell, since you don't get smashed with a massive fee like you do on eBay. But the timewasters, scammers and bots.. urgh.

Do most people just hand stuff down to their other family members? Where is the best place to sell stuff now?

Trade-ins for what its worth. I dont mind losing $200 to $300 if its safe and straightforward deal.

    • Yeah, I think that's a good idea. However, the tech I have now is a bit too old for a decent trade-in.

    • OP has already answered thier question!

"Gumtree and Facebook marketplace seem the best places to sell, since you don't get smashed with a massive fee":

What town or city are you in OP?

      • Brisbane.

For ipad and phones I use mazuma or mobile monster.

Otherwise fbm/gumtree is fine if you are ok with the haggling, ignoring scammers etc.

I think this is doable. Thanks.

  • I don't, they get passed down the family lol.

    • My family already have everything.

In draws, under beds; gathering dust 😅

    • I'm clearing out my drawers, hence the question :p

    • This is the way.

"it's just long in the tooth now." .. "pixel 4 xl"

    I'm still using Pixel 3.. :O

Gumtree and Facebook marketplace seem the best places to sell

If you're selling to people on Gumtree/eBay, I would recommend Zero filling the HDD (Win/Mac), then reinstalling before moving it on.

Yep, usually the old stuff will take old apps / games / general browsing before getting destroyed by kids.

Thanks, will do. Although with my data exposed through the linkedin, umart, Medibank and Optus hacks, it feels like a bit of a pointless exercise lol

    • I'm also on the pixel 3 train. Woo woo.
Battery life could be better when I'm using it, and my reception (Telstra) still isn't great.

      • yeah, the pixel 4 XL is actually still going strong too. I got sucked into the pixel 6 pro hype because I was keen on the tensor chip and better dictation etc. But it hasn't panned out the way I expected. I'm actually tempted to sell the pixel 6 pro too, that's been quite a disappointment.

    • Zero the drive and then fill it up with porn and torrents. Lots of people take the first plausible answer they get and look no further.

paid a significant sum for my premium Laptop, I aint selling it. I'll keep using it until it no longer functions, then consider repairing and restoring it. If not pass it onto family member. Not willing to sell it at all and loose $1500 + dollars I spent

    • Yeah I've replaced the battery in the MacBook air 2009. I'm also tempted to do the same for Macbook pro 2011 that we have sitting around.

I thought I was going to use it for sentimental reasons because it still works great. But then I realised I'm too picky on screen resolution and sound. I've been really spoilt by the Pixel and the Surface in that respect. I'm actually tempted to keep them all until their end of life.

  • Macbooks have done a trade-in via apple website. They send you a parcel to mail to them. They give you an apple giftcard for the trade-in value.

A 2009 laptop may not be worth anything. You can also drop it off at a apple store & they will recycle it for you

    Donate

    • Was thinking about it. But the only place I'd send it off to, DVconnect, has their partners in Coomera or something and that's too much of a drive.

  • eBay preferably
Great when there’s a promo for $1 fee or even free listings.
    Otherwise Gumtree

when do people generally replace their laptops? I've had my xps13 for 6 years, still performs well but the battery has taken a major dump

    • When I go to install a lightweight distro of linux on it and it doesn't have hardware support because it's too old.

  • Every now & then ebay does a deal where they waive seller fees for an item or 2.

Other than that facebook/gumtree & deal with the timewasters.

  • Install Ubuntu Mate on your 2009 macbook.
I did it with 2gb intel exxx series cpu 2011 macbook air and it went from maximum-super-laggy to quite useable.
Or leave as is and give it to someone you hate.

    • I'm surprised that you have this issue with lag. When I installed a third party battery in the MacBook air 2009, it worked well enough as a media device and could function as a laptop for student use as well. It was then that I realised I'm a glutton for 4k video and the air doesn't provide that.

If I pass it on to a kid, the MacBook air won't be as cool or last as long as all the newer items out there, as I'd suspect that any old MacBook third party batteries might not have the same longevity as the original macbook air battery. But it might still be worthwhile seeing if I can sell it on the cheap or donate it.

  • Is there a second best option rather than FB marketplace/Gumtree etc? I have a few non-apple tech pieces I'd like to flog quickly if possible
