Does anyone need MiniDV and Hi8 tapes?

i rediscovered my family's hi8 and minidv tapes which i have already moved to a digital format.

is there a need for these second hand tapes by organisation or whatever that still need to rely on old tech?

i feel it would be a nicer end for the tapes than landfill.

  • Try fb or gumtree, btw, how did you transfer minidv into digital format?
Copy them into HD or bluray?

the minidv camcorder has a FireWire port. i used a laptop running windows vista that has a FireWire port. i plugged one to the other and windows would control the camera and download it.

i then copied to a modern computer and used handbrake to convert to h264 and to de-interlace

      et voila

      • Firewire card for modern PC is about $25 on ebay

yeah but vista on a laptop is priceless !
and also free, as we already had the laptop.
it adds to the story line.

          • @FoxJump: I know that feeling!

I have 2 copies of vista in boxes unopened.. I've never installed it on a machine though!

@FoxJump: Look, Windows 95 is just fine. It runs Doom, Quake, Heretic and Leisure Suit Larry - what more do I need?

I'm sick of this pressure to install Vista.

                • @iDroid: Fair point.
Even in win10 my notepad.exe is unchanged from win95.

                  that's all I use.

I'll take your miniDV and hi8 devices if you need to offload them?

    • What use do you have for them?

I'll keep em for another few years in case a friend needs it. i last used mine in 2016 for myself and then a friend used it this year. so, my hoarding has redeemed itself.

  • eh, sounds like i'll just check em out.

  • Maybe ABC archive. They love to be in the stone age…..
