Give Away Notebooks to a Charity

Have two Asus notebooks in good working order that I would like to donate to a charity etc.

Does anyone know of any charity's that would be interested and willing to pick these up, I'm located in Brisbane. Also is there a quick and easy way to reformat them and just leave a generic copy of windows 10 on them?

Windows 10 should have an option to completely wipe the device and return it to "fresh out of the box" state.

See here - just pick Remove Everything instead of Keep My Files.

Don’t forget to select wipe the drive so that your files can’t be recovered

Local schools too, probably via the chaplaincy program, where students can't afford the mandated 1:1 technology program. Schools usually provide a loaner to the student if they can't afford it.

  • Dont know what they are doing these days (been a while since I worked with them but Substation33 does a lot of tech/charity work. https://www.substation33.com.au/ If they cant use them they will know who can.

  • Would any charity trust YOU to have cleaned up and removed any malware, or would they just do a clean re-install of Windows purely out of caution? its not as if they can't get a cheap licence, or even just download and re-install using Windows ability to recognise each machine's licencing fingerprint. Ask them whether want you to waste time cleaning up the PC, or whether you should just wipe the drive, and leave the rest to them.

I've volunteered at a local charity and sorted out the computers that come in for donation.

Just wipe it completely so your data is safe. Any reputable charity has access to Windows licences for free as Microsoft are very good at donating licences. We just used to put on Windows, Open Office and a free virus checker and links to where they could get most open source options or trials .

It's a good thing your doing, just protect your data. The computers we receive go to families that can't afford BYOD devices for their chicken, shelters that use them for clients who need help finding jobs and for sale in retail stores but this is usually the last option.
