  • Needing to replace one of my backup external drives. WD Mybook Duo. Unfortunately the connectors seem to be failing, drives are OK though.

Likely just gonna shuck them and sell. Was a local model too.

Given I only ever use the backup drive maybe 4-6 times a year… Does anyone think I'm better off installing internally in a PC, but simply unplugging to avoid unnecessary wear and tear…. Or using another external?

Ive only had drives fail with connectors before, both portable and powered. Had some bad sectors once too on some drives in a NAS that I set to turn off every night too…. Don't do that anymore.

    • Or should I just disable in BIOS?

    • +1

I run both external and in a caddy for the same reason of avoiding spin ups on drives i rarely use. Tho I'm not convinced its necessary. More likely to die of helium loss with how little i use most of my drives.

Using bios is going to be irritating comparatively

You could also pass Molex power out via a pci bracket then back in the same way. If you use a Molex extension cable you'll physically be able to unplug every drive running on that Molex cable without opening your case.

Lastly, years ago i remember seeing a 12v Molex switch on a remote control. You could use the remote to enable or disable the Molex. Think ebay cheapie. I never tried one.

It's not really a backup if both copies of the data are in the same place. If you have a flood/fire/lightning strike/burglary, then both copies could end up toast.

If you have a portable drive, you can take it somewhere else and leave it there.

Yes yes I'm well aware of that.

But 99.99% of it is just a Plex server. I'm not researching a cure for cancer.

The things that really matter are backed up additionally.

  • Great deal on a great drive considering the exchange rate. Hopefully Black Friday is even better.

  • Only 1 in stock apparently

I've noticed stock levels doing down and up throughout the day. It looks like you can add the one and then change to 10 at checkout before proceeding.

Wow 18TB in one HDD. Sum of all my 2.5"HDDs is around 20TB… After a flood of OTT services I stopped buy HDD.

    Are they noisy drives?

    • +1

They are quite noisy. I have a 16TB IronWolf Pro and it is noticably louder than the 2x EXOS drives I also have.

Just my experience - as limited as it is. :-)

I knew it would be nosy before I got it, and it's not an issue for me - but when I wanted to add more storage I went with the EXOS because of the noise as I would still rather not have it than live with it.

Also depends on your type of usage, where the drive will be (e.g. close to you, in a NAS far far away, etc.)

  • Good timing. Going to build a new RAID 10 and want high capacity drives as I don't want to be running 5+ year old HDDs in 24 drive JBODs like before.
