Original Coupon Deal

This is an excellent deal for beginner guitarists or musicians looking for a project guitar. The reviews on these Donner guitars are pretty good (if YouTube reviews are to be believed). I would snap one up in a heartbeat if the missus didn't say I already had too many guitars in the house.

Normally $164 but Donner has taken 10% off. With the code applied, you'll drop it down another $30.

Would rather play a Donner kebab than a Donner Telecaster

  • Question for anyone who knows anything about guitars: my son has been learning acoustic for a couple of years, would this be an appropriate first electric?

    • +1

It could be but depends on the style of music played which would steer preference for guitars.

Most beginners go with a strat or Strat copy, or a Les Paul or les Paul copy.

      Telecaster isn't particularly mainstream.

      • +3

I'd push back on that a bit…Telecasters are one of the most well known guitars - Keith Richards and Bruce Springsteen are Tele players.

        • +1

Sorry I meant mainstream for beginners.

How many beginner packs are there for strats and LP vs telecaster?

        • Didn't Cobain also play a telecaster prior to getting his own guitar made up?

      • +1

        Telecaster isn't particularly mainstream

Can you please repeat that, I'm not sure I heard properly, or maybe I just don't believe what I'm hearing

        • +1

I meant for beginners. See comment above regarding beginner packs

All the more reason to get one. My first electric was an SG copy. Got lots of comments. Second electric was a Tele copy. Right size and shape for sitting and playing. The SG was a little small for me.

Donner stuff is ok, but if your son has shown interest in the acoustic it’s probably looking at something from squier or epiphone. This would be a great first guitar if you weren’t sure wether a kid was going to stick with or not.

      • +3

        Yes agree.

If your child has been playing a few years already, I'd probably budget 500-700 on a epiphone les paul or squier tele or strat. If you were braver a better choice would be a used fender mexican strat that has had a good setup.

Probably the safest bet would be Squier Stratocaster. They are very well made, a good all rounder and will hold its value if he gets over it. Cant go wrong really. I would look for a secondhand Korean-made one. Handy hint get a sunburst or any type whereby you can see the woodgrain.

Take him to the guitar shop and try out as many guitars as possible. Work out what music he like and try to match that to guitar. The neck can vary a lot and depending on his age some are easier to play than others. Also positioning of the guitar when playing and height of the strings.I bought my son a 2nd hand Fender strat/amp but squires are good, he ended up playing the piano.

      • Cheers, good advice. We've had a piano sitting around unused for ages now, so that would be a great outcome for us! :D

If he obviously enjoys playing, and is playing regularly, try to get something better if you can.

Even talk to a guitar tech or luthier if you can find a reputable one…see if they know of (or have any) instruments for sale in your price range.

A well set up guitar, even if it's old and beaten up, will probably be way better than anything at this level. It can be extremely frustrating to play on an instrument if it's poorly set up (though if you don't know any better, you'll probably smile and suffer it).

All that said, I have a made in China Squier Strat, and it's much better than I would expect from such a cheap instrument - actually quite a pleasure to play. This Doner at least seems to be solid timber, so that's a good start, and it looks the part - but how does it play?

Just a head's up for those looking to modify this guitar…according to reviews, the body is routed for a humbucker pickup at the neck (where the single coil lipstick pickup is). Therefore, you'd only need to invest in an a a new pickguard (or route the existing pickguard) to drop in a humbucker.

  • Probably a cheap option for the new rocksmith+ app.

    • Just about cheaper than a 12 month subscription to RS+ !

Consider it's more about the amp than the guitar. Tom Morello first guitar was $40 from thrift store and he recorded RATM albums on it. So not all cheap guitars are bad. Just gotta hold tune.

    • +3

I second this. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and I've had expensive, cheap and everything in between. Cheap guitars can sound great with a proper amp.

Geez, that's Insanely cheap. Gonna buy this as a modding guitar. To learn how to setup/level frets etc.

    • +1

Good thought. No crying if you stuff up, just go to town on it!

Looks like their LP style guitar kit is slightly cheaper, $115.19.after coupon.
