Anybody Used these Sort of USB C to DC universal Laptop Barrel adaptors?

Hey wondering if people have used this sort of stuff (since its USB C can give upto 100W of power)

Seems to be pretty good idea if it works. Anyone used such kits ? with their laptops/routers/chargers/antennas/ etc.

Its a generic set of barrel jacks which we can plug into anything as long as it supports the correct voltage and current.

Ofcourse looking for convenience, and versatility as USB C, only one charger for everything from Laptops to modems to portable car battery jump starter chargers etc,

Prices of such kits seems to be under $30 so a decent convenience IMO, not to shabby given they work, so after your thoughts and experiences in using such devices or the generic Universal laptop charger kits

Can also buy generic non USB C brick universal barrel jacks, But that defeats the convenience purpose of just 1 USB wall charger, then just a cable to device (with 1 adaptor)

Interesting idea. I'm a bit sceptical that the ultra cheap ones are actually PD3 so don't think you'd actually get the max 20v 5a, probably more like 5v 3a which would still be useful for some things but certainly wouldn't run a laptop.

Interested to hear of any actual experience with them though.

    • there's a few review on standard only 1 pc adaptors on youtube. But not sure how honest they are.

That's why wanted to hear some opinion here before buying 1.

But I dont think getting 19V should be a problem, higher current may be a problem though. eitherway difficult to say without having tried it

I personally would only need 65W ish, may be 70W at max

I'm not certain but I think it would be a problem. I believe voltage via USB PD is limited to 5, 9, 12, 15 or 20 so you can't have 19. The voltage and current is negotiated by the onboard chip, something I wouldn't be surprised if many of the ones sold don't have or if they do are the older standard only allowing 20v 3a so 60w. Then there's also the issue of cable quality. There's a heap of nice looking cable that have fancy outer sheaths but skimp on the actual conductors.

I think the idea has merit, I'm just very cautious using generic products that could cause a fire.

        • unfortunately there's only generic products on market on eBay and amazon, No fancy brands in this market for such products.

          • @USER DC: Yep, so you just need to make a call on what your level of risk acceptance is. While generics are more regularly guilty of getting it wrong, either through error or deliberately, even big players have problems at times. Just look at Nvidia and the 4090 fires currently.

  • I've seen better looking kits on AliExpress where you can select the voltage using a switch - 5/9/12/15/20V

If you only want a single voltage, get one of these:

  • I've used a GaN 65w charger with MagSafe 2 to TypeC adapter on a 2013 macbook pro. It does work as intended, I don't have much more comments to say…
