Using Car Next Door for a 4 day trip in Sydney

Hey guys,

Going away for a few days and the weekend soon. Was looking into rentals, usually would go with whoever is available at the associated airport, however at 800+for 4 days, I was curious at other providers, specifically the smaller players in the market.

I came across uber having a rental option partnering with Car Next Door. Pricing looks good at over $400 less , and I guess the user reviews on the app look good aswell, however on forums I've heard some surprises about the excess and the company being of no help etc etc as usually with the usual rentals, if you pay an extra fee, you're completely covered.

Was wondering if anyone could shed some light if you have experience or whether I should just stick with the usual rentals?

Thanks all

  • I used car next door for ute hire and never had a probem

maybe use a referral link and get some credit

I've used them many times for 3-8 hours to hire vans/utes to collect large items.

Never had any issue, but haven't had the need to contact them for anything so can't comment on service. All automated and easy.

Multi day, I'd be a bit concerned about damage so would recommend the excess to be safe

Have a look at ladybug.com . Car rental consolidation site. I often check there as prices are very good.

  • Whilst they were in Australian hands all ok.
    now under uber who knows?

  • I've used them for years, across probably 10 different cars, until I bought my own. Never had issues and the system was good. Not sure now that they are officially becoming Uber Carshare, I guess no one really knows yet.

UPDATE: Guys have really gone downhill since transitioning to Uber carshare. App was terrible, slow and hard to use compared to before.

And now, they are refusing to refund me for a mistake they did, and have offered me "account credit" that will expire in a month for a future booking which I will not need soon, lol. I used to advocate for this service but I would seriously stay away right now.

I used to hire cars for a month or 2 when my parents visit us. I always got their insurance waiver.

  • Probably worth noting there's a $150(bond/deposit/charge) on your first trip. It's not automatically refunded, have to request withdrawal via app.
Also listed as a credit enquiry..
App is a bit flakey at times.

  • I have both rented and currently rent my car, UBER were offering $1500 per month for two months so I listed my 04 ute, I was happy until someone started borrowing it and racking up 1000's of K/m's, I understand this is what the platform is used for, but my preference / intention would be shorter trips around town (move house / take stuff to the dump) I'm 50/50 on leaving the car on the platform, might end up with a low end day rate and high K/m rate once the promotion is up to discourage massive K/m's being added to the clock. but all in all, its easy to rent out.
Renting a car was easy too, I used my credit in app, and the one I borrowed was a bomb with massive hail damage, so wasn't too concerned about damage being unfairly associated with my rental.
FYI, My car isn't that nice, it has a few dings and is a workhorse, so I barely look at it on the return, just check that it is clean and that there is no obvious damage, I presume this is what other lenders do too.

    • You didn't get more money from the more km used?

  • What did you end up doing and what was the experience?
