8x5 New Single Axle Trailer

Hello OzB,

Looking for a reasonably priced 8x5 new single-axle trailer. I am located in VIC. I am happy to travel in VIC for the right price and deal.

Just using it for general home duties with the odd garden run, tip run and burnings trip for timber etc. Going 8x5 just to have it a bit bigger as the 6x4 I have been using is my father in laws and is aging. Plus, it'll be easier to see behind my Ranger (6x4 is a bit hard).

I found but they have some not-so-good reviews.

Looking for a good deal and product. I know that's hard to find sometimes.

Cheers!

Spend wisely. It’s worth getting galvanised.

Looking at some rough pricing, its really about double what I was looking at spending.

      • Buy used.

It’ll last 3 times as long.

  • The advantage of 6x4 in Vic is that registration is not required.

    • I think anything under 750kg GVM doesn't require rego.

Not fussed about rego, happy to do it. Its cheap when compared to a car.

    • In Victoria to be exempt from registration a trailer has to weigh less than 200 kg, to not be wider than the towing vehicle, and to be less than 3 metres in length including the drawbar and the load.

An 8x5 trailer would have difficulty meeting those requirements, whereas its not hard to find a 6x4 trailer that does.

Sunshine trailers is who we have used in the past.

    • Thanks, I'll send them an email.

      • They first made one for us over 20 years ago and it’s still working today but unfortunately it was stolen.

  • If space is a consideration, we have a foldable Carlex 8x4, that fits into our garage up against a wall - https://carlex.com.au/

      That is very cool.

    • Space isn't an issue for storage. I have a caravan sized car port to store it.

  • All else being equal it sounds like a good idea to buy an 8x5 trailer rather than a 6x4 trailer.

    But …

A 6x4 trailer probably doesn't need registration in Victoria, where an 8x5 trailer would, Every year, year after year.

Because its lighter an unbraked 6x4 trailer can carry more mass of load than an 8x5 trailer before it hits the maximum unbraked trailer mass limit.

  • Is it possible to have a box trailer custom made, which is larger than 6 x 4, and slightly smaller than 8 x 5 to fit into the 'exempt' category? Perhaps have a chat to some local trailer manufacturers.

    • Like a 7x5 or a 7x4? They do have those and they are options to consider.

  • Trailer manufacturers in Victoria are well aware of their state's unique exemption for light trailers.

I'm sure they would offer products designed to come right up to the limit on those exemptions, but not exceed them.

Its not hard to design a trailer that's bigger than 6x4 that is less than 3m long. You have to remember though that keeping it under 200 kg may require less durable components, like a sheet floor rather than a chequer plate floor, And if you go much wider than a 6x4 trailer it can be legal to tow behind some vehicles, but illegal to tow behind others. And unregistered light trailers can't be towed out of the state.

A cage can be useful on a box trailer, but, again, you need to stay under 200kg to keep the registration exemption. In fact a cage can be a good substitute for more floor area.
