Question about Information Required for Warranty

Apologies if in wrong section.

Just got screen replaced on damaged mobile phone by real shop (not one of those booth things). Appears to be a decent fix and screen. When paying, was asked for lots of personal information 'so we can add you to the database for warranty purposes'

I asked if they could just record the serial number of the phone. No they said. They needed first and last name, phone number, address, email otherwise they couldn't fill out their database and they wouldn't be offering the advertised 12 month warranty on the new screen.

I asked if all that info was actually needed under ACL. Was told yes.

Eventually gave enough real and fictitious information to satisfy the shop, without divulging personal info I didn't want to divulge.

Thoughts?

Thanks

by real shop (not one of those booth things).

    They are the same thing.

  • What details did you fib about?

      Phone number
      Surname
      Address

  • They lied to you, i would of just provided all false information or found someone else.

    • Screen was already fitted and I had just paid. This was 'required for the warranty'

ACL only requires an invoice (technically it may need to be a tax invoice if GST was paid). An invoice does not need you to give all of the info they require and as such I would not give it.

    • That's where I was at, but couldn't be bothered arguing with a 19 year old and I needed to get to work.

If push came to shove, I would have given nothing and walked out and dealt with it tomorrow when I have more time.

I guess they have enough info to satisfy them and I am still anonymous enough to be content.
