No Tooth, No Implant, No Problem?

I was watching Channel Seven Sunrise this morning and they were talking about interest rate hike next featuring Jim Chamlers on screen. It was a short moment on the screen but I noticed that Jim Chalmers seems to have a missing molar tooth when he smiles.

It just struck me that my work colleagues in the office also have a missing tooth (noticeable when smile) and they do not bother doing dental implants. I asked them why not doing implant, obviously it’s the cost but they said it’s ok to live without it.
But for Jim Chalmers the cost wouldn’t be an issue. What do you think guys, missing tooth no problem?

dentist said all tooth supposed to work together if one missing, long term it will affect the other teeth ie movement, not alligned properly, not tidy/nice looks overall etc

    any dentist here?

    • If you're missing a molar, it puts less pressure on the front teeth. Pressure on the teeth and lack of space is what causes the front teeth to move over time. People with small gaps between their teeth tend not to get crooked teeth as they get older. Just my observations.

    • I was told same by dentist. I wonder why? hmm.
I was going to be obedient to the one who wanted to take my money, but changed my mind when a friend revealed that he had no negative consequences from having a couple of teeth removed decades earlier.
I now also have had a couple of gaps for about a decade with no regrets.

Dentists have a clear vested interest in giving such "advice".

Question is: would they give the same advice if they had to do the procedure for free ?

Could be when Rudd smacked him in the mouth for helping gillard steal his job..

In March 2013 Chalmers married Laura Anderson, a journalist and writer who worked as a staffer to Penny Wong and Julia Gillard. The couple have three children. Their wedding, attended by Gillard and Wayne Swan among others, occurred two days after an ALP leadership spill. While in attendance Gillard "convened a council of war in a specially set-aside room to frame a new ministry

  • If it's the rear most molar, less of a problem. Other molars are more problematic, as it can affect stability of teeth. A missing molar means less stress on jaw bone, which can lead to bone loss in the jaw over time.

Get implant in thailand. We call it tooth vacations

But but Australian dentists, the Australian salespeople for the implants, tell us it's bad to get our implants from overseas.

Perhaps he is in the process of getting an implant. It can take several months to complete.

  • I asked the dentist to rip one of my molars out just because it didn't feel right. So what?

Not everyone can get an implant. There's a fair few variables. One being that you need the right bone structure and depth in the location to get the titanium post to screw in to to then secure the prosthesis to.

There are other solutions too. Like a bridge, which is another way of replacing a missing tooth, but requires modification to the two teeth either side.

    • You can add cow bone inside your upper jaw. That allows implants to be drilled in.

      • Thank puck cows don't go to the dentist..

        Indeed you can.

You can also have a bone graft from other bones in your body.

My point was just that an implant is not always a suitable option for everyone.

      • Surgeon who did my wisdom teeth years ago put cow bone in the holes after to prevent a weak spot. He also did all the Newcastle Knights, apparently it's part of their contract to get wisdoms pulled and jaw reinforced (may have been bull/cow shit not sure)

He also tried to sell me on an implant for a missing adult tooth I just never got (1st molar on bottom right). Kind of glad I didn't get it, would have been so much money and 16yrs later the other teeth have barely moved.
In theory the others fall into the hole and the meshing of the teeth gets messed up so they wear out faster.
To get this done I would need braces for a few years and then an implant after that (lots of $$$ and mucking about)

My dad got all his done in one go in his 60's and he is happy with it. Just a few anchors holding the whole set in + you get fresh teeth

  • Almost certainly the cost for most people. About $5-6k locally.

  • Don't be cheap on your teeth, get the implant (or root canal). Especially if you're young (like Chalmers lol)

    • I've had quite a few root canals, and firmly believe it is a money making conspiracy. In my experience they eventually fail, and you either just keep spending money on them, or eventually have them pulled.

If it's a necessary tooth, pull it + implant. If it's not necessary, just pull it.

      • My dentist did my root canal, it lasted 16 years before failing and losing the tooth (infection). He said they are expected to last 15 years or so.

        • I guess you might see that it was worth the expense to have a tooth for an extra 15 years.
I figure you might as well have lost it on day 1.

I must admit though, I thought an implant was for life, but only recently learned they don't last much longer. Though I think most implants last 20 years, not some root canals. My experience with root canals has been far less.

If one has the time, one can visit Thailand for a 'dental holiday'. The cost for an implant with the best materials is $2,450.

In recent months I've had these treatments from a very experienced dentist in Bangkok: implant x1; root canal x 2; crown x 2; filling x 2; two tooth denture; cleaning. Total cost $4,500.

I am currently in India where dental costs are substantially lower. I was quoted $40 for a root canal & $480 for an implant (best materials). At some stage, I will require another root canal & crown. However, I will wait till I see my Bangkok dentist again as I appreciate her experience & concern for taking care of my overall dental hygiene. My teeth are old & not in great shape.

    • Hello fellow world traveler!

    • And if the implant fails, you are left with either nothing or a bridge supported by ground down the teeth on either side.
I have heard that in Thailand they will do implants with almost immediate loading. Whereas it seems that you should wait at least 6 months before loading.
I consider a dental implant to be a serious operation, and I suspect that in Thailand their primary aim is to make money.
I have had 4 implants done in Australia. I once had a bridge done in Thailand and they ground down the 2 supporting teeth too much! IE it failed!
A friend had major dental work done in Thailand, root canals, crowns, & bridge work. Several years later he went through hell with the work that was done (sorry I don't know the details).
Also hygiene during implants is extremely important, as there is a risk of getting an infection in the bone.

      • My Thai dentist made me go back in 6 months. 2 cheap holidays and still way ahead.

Meanwhile, my Australian-done implant failed. Lifetime warranty will cover the cost of the implant, not the crown, and not removing the old implant or inserting the replacement. So I'm just getting a quote to go back to Thailand to see if they can fix this mess.

[Just in case my other posts seem contradictory, I have 2 missing teeth, 1 Thai implant, 1 broken Australian implant, and a denture.
I'm happy with missing back teeth, but front teeth I get implants for. I think 3 of those implants had previously had root canal treatment by thieving Australian dentists.]

        • Curious how long the root canals lasted?

          • @reactor-au: I'd say a few years tops. This was some time ago, so the technology might be better?? I know the implants are better now.

      • I'm sorry you & your friend had bad dental experiences in Thailand. My worst ever dental experience was in Australia!

I cannot afford dental work in Australia, so am very appreciative of the good dentistry available in Thailand. Since 2010, I have regularly attended an excellent dentist in Bangkok. However, on returning to Thailand for the first time in two years in April, I learned he had retired due to excessive covid lockdowns. An expat Australian friend recommended me a lady dentist who is also excellent. I am very pleased with the treatment I have received from her. She is very thorough and takes great pride in her work.

Thailand has very high standards of dentistry & medicine, so I am not sure what you are inferring in mentioning infection risk.

Us all the migrants wait for a trip back home for major dental. A return ticket + a root canal with a best doctor + best materials costs a lot less than a root canal with a cheap dentist + a metal crown in here - besides where I live in VIC, nearly all dentists are foreign trained :D
