USB Hub [/Charger] & Detachable Card Reader [in Shape of a] Cup w/ Power Block (DSE # XH1660) $6

30

Classy novelty, great design, black in colour; Dick Smith brand; useful, with 2 devices in one box (the "cup" detaches); reads 4x types of memory cards; great price: Au$ 6.00, eg, due to older USB 2.0 standard? Compatible with Win XP, Vista, 7 + Mac OS X (in NZ, expect to pay NZ$ 30)

('couldn't find the product on Aussie DSE's web site, but NZ's DSE had it, albeit for ~ NZ$ 30.00 (!); bought it in SA for Au$ 6.00; 'didn't know Kiwis were paying so -much- more for things than we do, here in Oz!)

That would actually be really handy. Any idea on whether its available elsewhere?

  • It'd be hard to know, ie, without visiting DSE stores…
as it -wasn't- showing up on their web site (unless I made a typo entering the search keys (2 searches - 1 by code & 1 by name)…
    so, I couldn't check stock by store… :-/

Maybe ring your local stores & see if they have stock… or a better way to search for it, near you. :-)

I know mainly the Medium to large stores mainly got these in stock, so your best bet it to try those stores in particular, there's also a USB HUB Mini Lamp for $3 as well.

      Did you read the post?

  • So, when you plug in the hub (through given USB cable, by lower (of 2) jacks - each labeled "USB 2.0") the white top section lights up, making it easy to read the labels for each of the 4 memory-card slots, up there.

Also, removing the top section (ie, memory card reader) exposes a male USB slot that fit into it, providing it power & thru which data flows - via lower section - into the connected computer.

JUST MAYBE the [hidden] female USB jack (at bottom of card- reader) can be used as well as the memory card reader?

JUST MAYBE you can plug a USB stick into that female USB jack?

Also, JUST MAYBE, the [hidden] male USB plug (on top of USB hub) can be used - thru a F-F gender-changer - as a 4th USB jack?

IF SO, then I'd say: This is a product that gives MORE value than you thought it would, when reading its on-box description.

What a NICE surprise! even though a F-F adapter ISN'T included

NZ DSE's item descr says you can copy between multiple cards - YAUF = Yet Another Unexpected (by me) Feature.

I like that it (or is it Win 7 that) doesn't list 3 -empty- card slots, when only ONE has a mem card loaded (as some other card readers have done, in past).

THUMBS-UP to DSE for this simple, well-designed product… at such a -modest- price (EXCEPT in NZ).

While NOT perfect (eg, I'm sure DSE will receive a few back for warranty repairs, stained with coffee… ie, it looks like a cup, but isn't a cup ;-)

    …it puts to shame a "USB-Hub + Clock + coloured-light show" device we once paid OW $20 for, over a year ago… :-/

    • except I think it looks ridiculous.

Elijha, if I could give you more plus votes I would ;).

  • Guys, the Seven Hills store in NSW has got them, I managed to get one and they had about 30 odd left :-)

  • The Marion store in SA has a bin full of them.

The memory card reader part of it is great (and lights up blue when connected). I don't think it looks ridiculous at all. It's smaller than you think and basically a cube like shape with a handle that you barely notice.

I thought the USB hub would get all of its power from the AC adapter and I could use it in the next room to charge my camera battery, iPhone, etc. but sadly it has to be connected via USB as well.

Likewise I tried connecting it via USB to my laptop and plugged my iPhone into the hub and it said it couldn't be charged using that device, so it needs the AC adapter plugged in as well to give it enough juice.

For $6 though, it's a cheap, easy way of being able to read all memory cards on my desktop PC.

    Thanks OP!
