Theatre Room Setup Ideas ?

Hey Everyone,

Need some opinions on theatre room setup, there are so many choices I am not too sure what to go with for best quality, best bang for buck and longevity.

I am currently running a 77-inch curved Samsung screen which I purchased in 2016 but really want 120" or larger screen now.

There are so many mixed reviews about projectors online I am not too sure whether to go for a bigger TV or Projector.

Even in projectors I've got choice of going UST (Ultra Short Throw) or standard projector, If I am going UST then I only have 2 main choices of brands either, Samsung or Hisense, Samsung looks to be fairly pricey for now and Hisense just sells crap version of their projectors in EU/AU see this

My current requirements are below.
EARC
HDMI 2.1
100Hertz plus refresh rate
4K HDR 10 plus
Dolby Atmos
Good colors, picture quality and good brightness

I can honestly go for ceiling mount setup as well it will just be bit more work for me, room will be dark(mostly), and walls will also be painted dark.

I am happy to drop in roughly $8kish for good setup which would hopefully last me for at least next 8 plus years.

Thank you,

  • I don’t know much about projectors but here’s the discord link for Build Montage - https://discord.gg/mCtVYDMj

Build Montage is a home theatre channel on YouTube but good discord has home theatre enthusiasts and pros from all over the world. They are one of the best folks to ask all your home theatre related questions and I’m sure you will find the answer you are looking for.

    • Thank you will have a look :)

  • Very few projectors can do real 4k and they are expensive.
    Whats the audio setup?

    • I’ve got 7.1 Samsung but it’s from like 2014ish I think, works really well for now but getting Q990B, saw some reviews and went to JBHiFi to check it out and it sounds great and is more than enough for my needs

For $8k you’ll be hard pressed to do a “proper” home theatre setup if buying it all brand new. I’d suggest a new Epson 9400, new 120” screen from Selby, and a decent new AV receiver paired with some high quality second hand speakers (Krix etc.).

But there are heaps of variables that will impact both picture and sound quality. Room size and treatment being the first to look at.

    • Thank you, will have a look at Epson 9400.

Why would you need atmos on the projector? Wouldn't your audio receiver just feed image to the projector and nothing more?

If you're spending that sorta coin on the image, I'd hope you have more than just a soundbar

    • Wouldn’t projector need to support that functionality? I will do some more research and getting Q990B Samsung mainly for sleeker looks and it sounds amazing too.

      • No, projector just handles the image, provided you have a separate media source (ie nvidia shield)

I'm a big fan of proper surround instead of sound bars, and makes sense when dropping that sorta coin on the image

  • Why 100Hertz plus refresh rate?

Anyways, for ~8k the absolute best at that budget would be the NP5 https://au.jvc.com/projectors/home_cinema/dla-np5b/

    • Thank you, will have a look, and mainly because I want to get something that is future proof and can play games and stuff on it too.

  • If you can - get LAN cabling back to the router for all the AV gear (so they aren't using wifi). Assuming they have LAN capability…

  • UPDATE: I actually ended up buying both 85" Samsung QN90B and Hisense 120L9 Triple laser

Even though tv is brighter for daylight situations, bigger size is far more enjoyable. for anyone else stuck with this decision I'd say def say go with the biggest projector screen you can go with according to your wall size.

I have been using my setup for roughly 6 months now and am extremely happy with projector setup paired with Apple tv and Samsung Q990B.

Whoever said size doesn't matter lied :P
