Android Tablet for 5yo under $300

Need something reasonably responsive and able to run reading eggs for my 5yo daughter.
It will double as a media device streaming some YouTube. 10 inch minimum screen size.
Refurbished is ok with me if that is the best route?

Reading eggs is not a video game, so the GPU requirements are actually fairly modest

You should be able to get by with any of the budget MediaTek powered tablets, like the Galaxy Tab A8 / Lenovo Tab M10. There's like 3 different variations of the Lenovo's.

There's also the Blackview Tab 13, a cheap Chinadroid tablet that supports 4G LTE. Don't expect any major Android Os updates though and there is no Widevine L1 support — meaning DRM protected video streaming will be in SD not FHD.

Cheers! Of the Galaxy Tab A8 & Lenovo offerings what would you choose? I don't need any sim support as it will be always on WIFI and never leave the house.

Samsung has longer OS support. 4 years security updates I believe.

Went with the Samsung, happy days!

  • iPad 9?

No we are accustomed to Android devices around here.

      • They are also $499.

      • Respectfully, that's a silly reason imo. Android is great on phones and there are options at every price range. I personally prefer Android phones over iPhone. However for tablets, only the high end Android tablets are good. Low end Android tablets just suck, they're built cheap, feel and look cheap. The iPad 9 is objectively the best value tablet on the market. Being accustomed to Android doesn't mean you should ignore that. Not to mention your daughter is likely to be more excited about an iPad, because of most of her friends are gonna have iPads.

Now if the fact that it is $150-$200 more expensive than your budget is the problem, then ignore me and get scrimshaw's options.

after 2 broken ipads and 2 broken samsung tablets, my kids get hand me down phones now lol.

tablet screens break after 1 drop

    • they won't break if you put a thick case on them

      • Lol yes they will
I had those ebay cases with the bright colors and big handles for kids to hold

      • Yes they do;

  • I would consider not being fixated on a tablet. Obviously you've got your reasons for selecting that form factor, but just wanting to highlight that a cheap laptop could be worthwhile:

We recently got our child a refurbished laptop that we're pretty happy with. (it was an Asus Travelmate Spin B118 with 4GB RAM 128GB SSD for $250) We chose it as it has a touchscreen, is a convertible (scren flips 360° to sit on the bottom of the keyboard, making a chunky tablet basically) and as it's a full x86 PC running Windows can easily be used in future for other school work including word processing etc.
