New Dyson Gen5 Detect Model Outline

Hi all, just thought I'd provide an outline and comparison of the new Dyson Gen5 Detect cord-free vacuum for OzB users' reference.

New features & changes
* 23% more suction power than V15 on boost mode. This benefits non-motorised tools such as crevice tool in particular.
* On & off button next to LCD screen. No need to hold down trigger anymore.
* New Fluffy Optic hard-floor head, twice as bright as laser slim fluffy head on V12, Outsize & V15
* HEPA filter included (filtration standard increased to 99.99% of dust to 0.1 microns, vs 99.99% filtration to 0.3 on other models). HEPA Dyson CF models are distinguished by the cyan coloured filters, vs purple on the older filters.
* Redesigned LCD readout. Graph will now have lines expand when high levels of dust are being picked up. The lines get smaller as the floor area becomes cleaner.
* 70 minute battery on Eco mode. Battery has also been redesigned to better distribute weight.
* 3.5KG weight compared to 3-3.1KG weight of V11 and V15. This is offset during use on floor by redistributed weight and button. Additional weight is mostly noticeable during handheld use.
* Crevice tool integrated into vacuum wand/tube so it's always on hand. Also has a dusting brush build in.

Note that due to manufacturing capacity constraints & parts shortage, V11 is currently not in cord-free core range. This may or may not change in future.

  • For additional context:
DLS - Dynamic Load Sensing: Allows the vacuum to tell whether on hard-floors or carpet with Digital Motorbar head. Lowers suction for hardfloors to save power, & boosts it for carpet cleaning
Piezo - The Piezo sensor determines how dirty a floor is by the vibrations of the dirt. From this, the machine will increase and decrease suction as needed.

NO ONE, and i mean NO ONE is gonna pay $1500 for a (profanity) vacuum on OzBargain.

    • I'll take two.. jks!!

For the past couple of months, I've actually been wondering how anyone justifies paying $1500 for a vacuum. (I mean, there's obviously people that do buy it!) I spend (and waste) a lot of money, but I just can't imagine dumping out that much cash for… a vacuum cleaner. I thought that paying $350 or so for a V7 a few years ago was a lot already.

      • Consider yourself you don’t have allergies. :)

    • +5

I’m not posting this to get people to buy it, I’m posting to inform people, particularly for when it eventually goes on special and OzB users are wondering about the differences.

    • Of course not, but when it first goes on sale for 10% off this thread is where people will turn to for justification.

  • $1500. have they got a 3070Ti inside?

    • +2

      $1,500 for a 3070 Ti is a rubbish deal these days, here’s a standard $1,500 3080 Ti for ya 😉https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/graphics-cards/nvidia/90281-gv-n308teagle-oc-12gd

  • Would you pay $899 for a Dyson hair styling wand?

    https://www.dyson.com.au/dyson-airwrap-complete-blue-rose-br…

Or $599 for a Dyson hair dryer?

    https://www.dyson.com.au/dyson-supersonic-hair-dryer-iron-fu…

    • +2

I have both and would say that they’re great but made for regular hair dryer and styler users, rather than occasional users.
Reason being is that they are made to prevent heat damage that other dryers and styling tools cause.
Heat damage to hair is cumulative and can only be fixed by cutting off affected length, so regular use compared to standard tools prevents heat and tension damage to maintain healthy and strong hair.
The supersonic dryer is also one of the fastest available, using high airflow as opposed to heat while helping save time.
The value of these is going to be different for everybody, I’d say that whether it is worthwhile depends very much on the individual.

Yes, my wife did and she loves the hair dryer.

Thanks OP, was a good breakdown/comparison.
I managed to get the v15 last year while on sales and was wondering what the gen5 is about.
I personally like the trigger but I guess it does tire up your grip after extended hse and maybe that's why they got rid of it?
Seems like the gen5 is not much of an upgrade vs v15, slight bump to power but now even heavier?
The v15 is already too heavy for my liking given I came from a V6 that was super light.

    • Great to hear you were able to get one for a better deal!
There are a couple main reasons for getting rid of the trigger
      * it reduces forearm and finger tension, helping make the vacuum less tiring to use. This also helps the unit feel lighter.
      * the longer battery life makes the unit turning off to conserve power less important.

Regarding the weight, the battery is shifted downward, so the unit doesn’t actually feel noticeably heavier for floor cleaning, at least in my experience. For handheld use however, you do feel it.

Suction power is approximately 23% higher than V15 to provide context. I’d say it’s worth it with the approx $100 difference in RRP, however the V15 is definitely more than sufficient for most. They’re both definitely a jump up in weight compared to the V6!

Paid $1250 (inclusive of 20% off) for the v15 total detect complete in the limited gold wand colour. Also came with the free floor dock and an extra battery as well as the latest accessories of the motorhead etc.

Absolutely no regrets thusfar. Dyson customer service have also been great.

    • +1

Glad to hear you’ve had a good experience! Those extra parts are almost $350 together so it seems like you got hold of a good deal

      • Hey!! You used to be melba? I thought someone had replaced you 😂😂

Your help was fantastic and one of the reasons why I bought a Dyson!!

        • Yep! Now I remember 😆 happy I was able to help out.

Just felt like a name change for better privacy. Glad you’ve had such a good experience

    • I was waiting for those to get back into stock so I could use the September 20% owner discount.

And I got the alert about a day or so after I saw an ad for the gen5.

To get the v15: cheaper, floor dok, and comes in gold - or the gen5 which is not gold but is ever so slightly better. Tough call.

      • If I had the newer version, I would probably know no difference tbh 🤣.
        Easy choice is a win:)

  • Thanks for sharing OP.

Your table says both Gen5Detect and V15 Detect has 0.1 micron filtering. Is this correct?

    • Hi, great question. I’ve updated to say 0.1/0.3 microns as the V15 absolute model sold in stores filters to 0.3, whilst the v15 complete sold by Dyson online has a HEPA filter and does down to 0.1 microns.
      Hope that clarifies!

    • +1

U can buy the HEPA filter separately as well from Dyson

I replaced the stock purple one on my v15 with the light blue HEPA one

      • +1

Spot on, it's possible to upgrade to the HEPA filter for both V15 and V12.

        V15
        SKU: 970013-03
        Price: $59

        V12
        SKU: 972126-02
        Price: $59

        • OP, the purple ones are hepa too right?

Does it need cleaning, is it washable?

          • @hashtagbargain: The purple filters are not HEPA by themselves, however all modern Dyson models with washable pre & post filters meet or exceed the standards which HEPA is commonly measured against, as the washable filters work in conjunction with the metal filter and cyclones to ensure that the machine filters to that standard.
I know that this is confusing, essentially the systems on older vacuums technically couldn't say HEPA as the filters weren't, but the overall system achieved filtration equivalent to HEPA requirements.

Yes, the filters are washable under cold to lukewarm water, without soap. They must be dried for at least 24 hours after washing to ensure that they don't introduce moisture into the vacuum.
V10 and newer units are washable like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=445zcHO6QIw&ab_channel=Dyson
V8 and older units are washable like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMl76cYTavI&ab_channel=Dyson
Make sure to watch with closed captions on for detailed explanation.

            I hope this clarifies.

  • thanks mate, good info for the future

  • When is the charging stand going to be released for the Gen5?

    • I wish I knew! Unfortunately that information hasn't been shared with me as of yet. I'll update as soon as I know and am permitted.

  • Hi any discounts on Gen5 Detect as yet? noticed that the light is much brighter when I had a check in the Dyson store. Also the new button is a saviour! Also need spare battery as an accessory ASAP!

    • From experience, it usually takes quite a few months for discounts to become available on new Dyson models unfortunately. This will be compounded by low stock on hand of the new models, as many locations haven't received inventory yet.
Agreed on the fluffy head, switching from the laser to an LED allowed 2x the brightness, taking the effective illumination distance from around 15cm to over 30cm and makes it much more useful!
Batteries will definitely be available, though I haven't received an ETA unfortunately

      • Thank you OP for continuing to keep us upto date on the models. It’s so helpful for me.

Have an old v11 outsize. Was amazing, although it’s a bit rickety now with the pole loosening. I also have a Dyson by which is used handheld for Laundry/little spot cleans. The outside is way to exhausting as a handheld.

Have been eyeing off the gen5, do you know if I were to contact Dyson Online store, they can offer a personalised lower price, or an extra click in battery for the gen5 due to customer loyalty? Or is that not a thing?

Look forward to your next post, thank you (:

  • The Gen5Detect looks like a good upgrade from my V7. Waiting to see if any deals come up during Black Friday/Christmas.

  • Is there a recommended way to empty the Dyson bin space in the models, Gen5Detect and V15 Detect which reduces air-contamination?
I've been hesistant to upgrade from the V8 because the blow-out of dust from the emptying process has been a constant pain.

    • Unofficially, yes. Many people put a plastic bag around the bin when emptying. Billowing does occur significantly less than on the V8 and earlier models, but many people use the supermarket plastic fruit bags to catch the dust.

  • 10% off on Shopback until 6pm right now - get the Gen5Detect for those waiting for it - actually out of stock

    • A bit odd that it was in stock prior to shopback offer and then out of stock during offer. Now back in stock day after….

      • For reference, stock levels are extremely low due to the high demand. My local store received 60 Gen5 units on Thursday 11/24 and by Sunday were down to 25.
Production capacity is currently a significant limiting factor, which is why V11 is temporarily non-core range, as the resources were re-allocated to produce Gen5 units. This situation will hopefully improve, and the V11 should return to core once capacity increases.
This is just for reference, many core range items have had low stock availability for over 12 months now, this is most notable in the air purifier range, with low availability of the HP07/TP07/HP09 in particular.

  • Has anyone who purchased a gen5detect been able to find a freestanding floor dock that works? Dyson tells me that they don't make one.JB and Harvey norman also tell me there is nothing aftermarket.

    Any suggestions?

    • just cut some timber and screw the wall dok on it.

    • Can't find the standalone accessory option to buy it, but it's available to buy with a new gen5 complete if you don't already own one: https://www.dyson.com.au/dyson-gen5detect-blue-copper

At the time of release the dok wasn't available at all. But perhaps if you ask support directly (via chat?) they might be able to sell you one separately?

  • My V6 wand broke so making my V8 as my "spare" vacuum and got the gen5 as my main. Got it on Sat from JB price match with David Jones 10% off. Really wanted it at 20% off but didnt want to wait months.
    1. its quite big and heavy but i think ill get used to it
    2. I believe it is a totally new back plate for the wall mount. I screwed in 1 hole and clipped on the front charger to check the height - then had no idea how to take it off. Manual just said unclip it but didnt explain how. In the end I just popped it off with force. Feels like I nearly broke it….not a great design.

  • I want to get the Laser Fluufy Head for my V11 Outsize. Will it be compatible and where can I get it by itself?

  • Omni glide obviously the cheapest model, but how does it compare?

  • Hey all, anyone got the gen5 detect brand new that has a slight burning motor smell in the vaccuum? I had the v12 absolute and didnt notice that. Also had issues while using it where motor heads stopped working twice. Got mine today and my only option based on chat is to get it assessed by service center.

  • Thanks Anthropomorphised. Any chance of updating the table to add the Gen5outsize?
