Have heard about this brand for awhile but also know they are expensive, I believe due to them having 3 layer vacuum insulation as opposed to the typical 2.

Performance of these should be better than the typical vacuum flasks, the justification here I think is that it costs about the same/cheaper than the much loved Zojirushi ones but should (in theory) perform better.

Colour selection isnt the greatest and 473 mL might be a bit small for some, but the other colours cost $50-$80

I'd love to know how many stainless steel drink bottles end up in landfill like the plastic bottles they were created to replace.

They became the defacto corporate giveaway item (replacing the ubiquitous 8GB USB thumb drive) about five years ago and the things are everywhere.

    • The problem is the silicone seal starts to yellow and give away after a while, and they don't sell replacement seals……

      • Yep.

Then add to that the fashionistas who demand the right colour/style of water bottle - or who won't be seen dead with a water bottle with chipped/scuffed paint - and you can see the landfill piling up.

      • Looks like they sell 3 different sorts of lids too.

  • "3 layer vacuum" - can you explain what this is exactly?

My guess is that this is a pretty standard dual-walled (vacuum) bottle, probably with a coating on the inside (the third layer). (Or perhaps even the outside finish they are calling a layer?)

I'm just a bit sceptical, given there are zero details given about this triple layer insultation. And, because they look identical to these:

Edit: Just to be clear, I am not calling BS on this one (because OP, you are a poster on here that I have faith has done their research!). Just honestly curious as to how this one differs to others. Cheers!

    • You don’t need to hold back. 3 layers should provide better performance on paper but looking at the cold & hot times it is comparable to any decent vacuum insulated bottle. The pricing on this is premium though I don’t believe it is such an established brand(although I could be living under a rock).

    • I'm guessing the double-wall example you linked has air between the two walls. Which is why the word vacuum isn't used.

Who knows really how much of a difference it makes. I suppose you could buy both, fill with same amount of liquid at given temperature. Wait 5 hours then measure temperature of each.

      • Yep Double-Walled isnt the same as vacuum flask. I have a sneaky suspicion that the "free bottles" I got from SEEK are double walled, and my oasis/zoji are definitely vacuum.

You can kind of feel leakage in temperature through the bottle (like its warm to the touch). Proper vacuum shouldnt feel that at all, it should feel cold/room temperature to the touch.

    • Im basing it as "not as a scam" by the advertised performance (although I know thats not always to be trusted).

The common bottles like Thermos advertise keeping cold for about 9 hours (which is pretty short), but swell advertise that it keeps it cold for 24 hours and hot for 12.

Your personal results may vary, I personally have a few "freebie" "vacuum" flasks (i.e. given from SEEK) and the performance of it is definitely nothing compared to my "oasis" branded bottle or zoji. Im not doing randomised controlled tests with thermometers obviously, but it doesnt take one to know theres a difference especially the longer the time period, the more exponential in the loss of performance (i.e. once the ice melts or once the steam cools).

I havent got a swell bottle yet, this will be my first one so I will see how it goes and let you know my thoughts. Just also want to be candid that you may very well be right, and may be no significant difference over the one you linked. Cant say because i dont have the decor

      • All good mate - I would be very interested to hear your results!

I dont have the Decor one either, I just happened to recognise the shape, because those were recently on sale at Coles/Woolworths.

I am just using a stock standard supermarket Sistema one (which is vacuum insulated also), and that works well enough for me. But I have always been meaning to buy something better (ie. Zojirushi), hence why I am actually interested in these Swell bottles - so please let me know how you go, because I do value your thoughts! :)

It was more "marketing fluff" rather than "scam" I was thinking. I'm guessing these are at least somewhat better than your stock standard vacuum sealed bottle. I'm just wondering how significantly. As I understand it, copper coated vacuum is superior to regular vacuum - so I guess my scepticism was more about why they havent specified exactly what the "third layer" is in this case: is it copper coating? Is it some other (lesser) coating? Or are they counting the "vacuum layer" as the third layer? Just seems a bit odd to not give further details on what the third layer is - they should be using it as a selling point!

But yeah, let us know how you go! :)

it has a screw top lid with a wide mouth……if you want to drink tea/coffee from it …..that lid is a separate purchase $24.85
I have 2 Zojirushi 480ml (although one seal has worn out)…… am here looking for a replacement …..but Amazon never have Zojirushi on special anymore 😕

So I have been using it for a little while now, i got sick with COVID about 3 weeks ago (and currently sick again with some other kind of cold virus) so I actually got to use it for hot water.

I think the heat retention performance is worse than zoji, maybe even worse than the standard Thermos bottle.

I think the width of the bottle diminishes the performance since there is more surface area to effectively "cool" the water. But the performance is definitely better than the free double walled bottles i have.

    TLDR:

    Positives:
I like the width of the mouth of the bottle. It makes it easy to clean and to put ice of various sizes inside the bottle without a problem.
    Easy to clean and maintain

    Negatives:
Heat Insulation performance despite being advertised as "triple layer" seems worse than my "cheaper" bottles (i.e. Thermos , Oasis)

    • Just saw this - cheers mate, appreciate the feedback!

      • On further thoughts and use i find it to be fairly similar (not that much worse) but I do think that maybe the large cap makes for a bigger heatsink.

For vacuum flasks the lids seem to be the point of loss

        • That makes sense - I'm not sure that the lids on these bottles are vacuum sealed double walled like the rest of the body. If not, that would explain it!
