Help with Apple Watch Cellular Connection for a Kid

Hi guys, I need some help.

Got an Apple Watch SE for my 12 year old. He doesn’t have an iPhone.

I understand that I can set up the watch as a family but don’t get how to connect the watch to a cellular plan?

I am currently with Optus ($59 plan). It’s an old plan.

I read on the forum about ‘number share’. Does it mean I call Optus and they will help me set up the watch with my number? If that’s the case does it mean, any call I get, will also go to his watch? Lol that’ll be crazy!

Or should I get a SIM plan for the watch separately? Can you recommend a cheap monthly plan? Do I have to stick with Optus for the SIM plan for the watch or can use any carrier?

      No, no iPhone.

      Got the watch only so that we can communicate during school and activities pick up.

    I had Truphone plan on our apple watch series 6 to get family plan.

    There was absolutely nothing wrong with the service, just the Apple watch in general is completely restricted/useless here in Australia in Family Setup mode (at least for an adult).

    "Apple Pay using a credit, debit or public transport card in the Wallet app is not available with Family Setup"

    Ended up having to switch from pre-paid to post-paid and then pay an extra $5 per month to get cellular to work on the iWatch. Cheapest plan we could find was Vodafone.

      @mshannon thanks for sharing. If you don't mind helping me avoid a similar situation please confirm that is it not possible to use Truphone outside of a "family setup mode"? And was leaving Truphone your only option to to enable the wallet app and features?

        @Vietsolder - With truphone plan, you can only use an apple celular watch in family setup mode.

        Whereas post-paid plan on Telstra/Optus/Vodafone no such restriction applies.

        You can get an apple watch without celular and it works in tandem with your iphone.

        Supposedly you can make payments too with wallet on an apple watch without cellular and not connected to phone - as payments interact using NFC - you would want to confirm that though!

    Any latest suggestion? What option you guys finally picked up and at what price?
    I am having vodafone prepaid and looking to pair my Apple cellular watch with existing number. Apple watch SE cellular also to be set for kid.
