For those who caught the Ratcheting screwdriver bug from the LTT Screwdriver launch but can't justify the ~A$155 cost!!! I've been looking for cheaper alternatives to scratch my ratcheting itch and have found what I believe to be the cheapest reasonable quality driver that can make those satisfying ratchet noises: CRAFTSMAN CMHT68129 15 PC SpeedDrive Ratcheting Screwdriver for $42.27.

Here's a great review showing the SpeedDriver feature and comparison to Megapro (OEM of LTT screwdriver)

This driver was not included in Project Farms great ratcheting screwdriver comparisons but based on mine I feel it would finish mid pack, that's not to say its a bad driver, its just in a lower price bracket, the ratchet feels and sounds amazing, the double action SpeedDriver mechanism is pretty cool too but does come at the cost of no locking mode, some shaft wobble and I think moderate levels of back drag (it's really hard to judge), measured weight is 311g which is on the heavier side but that does make it feel like a quality & robust tool, it's definitely no Megapro or PBSwiss rival but for the price it's reasonable quality.

Other options on the market include:
Megapro automotive for $90 on Amazon (RRP is $35 USD for reference) Its regularly out of stock since LTT hype - Ranked 3rd by Project Farm, if you've got the budget then this is the one to get.
Williams WRS-1 for $73 - Ranked 4th by Project Farm, it's basically the Snap-On with some missing features.
AmazonBasics 73 piece kit for $30 and 27 piece T-Handle kit for $18 - cheap, lots of bits, ….someone's going to comment these if I don't.

Happy Ratcheting.

Face it, you'll buy this and wonder just how much you're missing out on and how much better the LTT one would be so eventually you'll blow the 150 and get it. So you might as well save the 42$ by not buying this one and just get the LTT one anyway ;)

It's sad but true…. maybe I should make a second mistake and grab a Megapro while there still in stock.

    • +7

This here explains my entire shopping existence, you looked directly into my soul

    • It'd be true if I wasn't already waiting for the LTT. All I have is the much poorer Bosch ratcheting driver for comparison (OzB made me do that at least).

  • +3

As someone who's probably gonna buy the LTT Screwdriver, the problem I see with this one is the shaft is very short, which makes it kinda bad for PC Stuff, the Handle is gonna bump around inside the case against everything.

  • There's also this one which is imo more comparable than the amazon one you linked https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07V5WYXP5/

There are better options to the LTT one

Yeah honestly, don't see the hype with the LTT screwdriver. Unless it's your job to screw screws, why bother.

  • I looked up the pricing on the LTT store, its US$88 (US$18 for shipping, $70 for screwdrive) which is AU$140. Expensive, but it would easily be worth the cost if you do PC building often.

I however only upgrade my PC once every 5 years at least but I'm still tempted

    • +3

      +10 GST ;(

But yes very tempting, the LTT marketing machine is very persuasive.

      • +4

its effectively a way for LTT fans to donate to Linus

to me its not even a tool you would use all that often so

      • Plus the extra bits I ordered :)

It looks good, it tested well. It's only one screwdriver I need to keep track of (I have a habit of not finding the one I need and using one I shouldn't).

Also I don't mind supporting LTT in that way. I've enjoyed their content for years and they haven't gotten anything but views/ad revenue. Most of their Merch and products either aren't for me or aren't worth it with shipping, so given this interests me (in the process of replacing cheap tools with best of breed, within reason) I bought in.

        • Especially if you use adblock

    • upgrade my PC

I use a normal screwdriver once every 5 years for PC builds. Seems to work fine, am I doing it wrong?

Is the only benefit of the ratchet screwdriver that you don't need to change grip? If so, I don't think I need that benefit.

      • Your upgrade schedule sounds fine to me. Though it's not just for PC builds. (also you might be dismantling here and there for cleaning etc)

I'll mainly be using mine for 3D printer stuff, (upgrades, projects, etc). I do more PC stuff at work (more than the every few year upgrade cycle at home), but will stick to a cheap kit at work as I wouldn't want the LTT driver to disappear.

More around hobbies and the joy to use for me. Buying a better quality tool, even used infrequently, is more enjoyable and just means it'll last longer.

  • Is the one of AmazonBasic good? There are several AmazonBasic sets, which one is the best? I am a bit confused about those prizes.
    Thank you.

      Just go to bunnings….

      • I got one from Repco a Mechpro on their last sale, was $10 uncluding bits …. I think it depends how many hours a week you use a tool that determines how much you are willing to pay …. my non-ratcheting screw drivers are Wera, and also a Vessel set for JIT (japanese Industrial Standard),

        • uncluding ?

  • My biggest issue with all of them, especially the LTT one as it's meant to be focusing on tech and PC hardware, the nozzle is not long enough. It needs to be at least double the length, can't even screw very popular Noctua NH-D15 cooler with these, because it won't reach the screw. Trying to tighten or open PCI slot brackets makes the handle hit many cases.

I really hoped LTT would not focus on competing with some of the best screwdriver brands and just create a decent ratcheting driver that's long with a strong magnet. The nailed the latter, the nailed on competing with some of the best, and the build quality and everything. But I do wish it had a detachable nozzle at least with different lengths.

    • +2

for me if the shaft isn’t the length of the depth of the case, then i’d rather use a normal screwdriver with a long shaft ….hate the motherboard screws that are the edge of the inside of the case.

      • you're better off with a 1/4" socket drive w/ a long extension shaft from bunnings, ebay

  • Seems overpriced for craftsman crap.
Someone points out a better option to better quality for not much more and gets negged 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

  • +4

I ordered a wave 1 LTT screwdriver which should ship early next month. I saw the price difference as a way of giving back/supporting a channel I love as well as getting a very nice screwdriver.

    • +3

yes same, I ordered one and justified the extra cost as a way of supporting LTT,

  • I was really fortunate to find one of those snap on soft grip ratcheting screwdriver sets (usually RRP above $300)….got it at a garage sale for $5, i'm assuming it was a deceased estate and the new owners didn't know it's worth.

This is one of the ones that LTT based theirs off of. Overall, i love the thing, it's amazing, i use it nearly every day and works worry free. Supposedly it didn't score aswell as some of the cheaper ones on project farm, but it still does a great job….HOWEVER, would i pay $300+ for it? given the other options on the market right now, probably not.

    • I use the snap on at work every day and the best thing about it is being able to swap the shaft to a different length.

I do like the bit storage set up on the LTT one though.

    • LTT is actually based on megapro. Don’t think it’s anything related to snap-on until they contracted megapro to make theirs

      • +1

sorry, when i said "based on" i meant they drew inspiration from from the snap on ones and wanted to improve on it whilst not being a ripoff. this is prior to approaching mega pro, Linus said himself that he liked it, it's just too expensive. He even had one himself.

wow, another junket i dont need.

    PASS

  • Pointless comment - I have a stanley ratcheting screwdriver that has been my regular go to for years

I think it was circa $20, though would def buy something like this again if I lost it 👍

  • +3

In my experience, by the time the screw is in enough that the ratcheting kicks in, you're almost done with the screw and you're already in the groove to screw the rest in by hand

    (for computer parts)

Unless you're using two hands, then just use a regular screwdriver…

If you intend to use it in a trade setting, this is the only choice for a ratcheting screwdriver that's robust, light, and a pleasure to use.

    • Good find for $60, assuming it's a rebranded Megapro and not just a clone this night actually be a better deal.

  • If you are cheaper still, but want any ratcheting driver (i.e. without bit holding), the Bosch 91 piece V-Line kit is only a dollar more but comes with lots of extras.

  • $155 AUD!

How much are they ripping us off for shipping?
I hope the exchange rate gets better.

    • +1

Less if you split it with an OzB friend :p

    • $27ish USD for taxes and shipping (I paid $104USD total including another set of bits)

      • +2

Same… we should have split it :)
