Asus Transformer Pad TF300T or iPad 3

Hey Guys!

Looking at buying a tablet…

Either between an ASUS EEPAD TF300T(32G+D)-BL (comes with dock)

$576

Or an iPad 3 - ~$490

I am just not sure which one is better. I understand that the iPad has the retina display which would be amazing, however the dock included would be good.

I am also aware that the iPad 3 is a newer "model" tablet with the retina display as compared to the TF300T

  • Well, you should decide for yourself, what is more important - the dock or the retina display. From my point of view, obviously the retina display.

  • Watch the engadget/gizmodo video. When presented with an iPad 2 but told it was iPad 3, half a dozen people who were asked kept saying how much better it is compared to the iPad 2.
Personally I would get the tf300 with dock just to avoid iTunes. Drag and drop with USB on the port IMO is far superior to having to sync it to 1 computer and that computer only.

Retina display is also just a marketing name. You should be comparing the pixel density.

Then again it depends on your usage. I bought an iPad for my parents because they are quite computer illiterate.

    • I was lucky enough to have loan of both ipad & transformer + dock side to play with , the WIF (Wife Acceptance Factor) weighed heavily on the transformer because of the keyboard. I agree, the keyboard makes it so much more usable and it's handy as a stand and spends a good chuck of it's time on the kitchen bench.

The screens are hard to tell apart and unless you're primary use is to watch HD video, then I didn't think it'd be much of a factor. Price would be more of a consideration for me.

      • One thing I found is that you can just buy bluetooth keyboards for the iPad.

        • Yeah, you can certainly use a bluetooth keyboard.
advantage of the asus one is that it's a stand & has a battery which doubles battery life when docked.

SO what did you decide to get?

        • Still deciding, its for a present…

ASUS TF300T has more connectivity options like usb port and the other port available and the processor is much faster too. Then it comes down to your OS choice whether iOS or Andriod.

"Retina display" is just marketing speak for "we got nothin'". It doesn't sell the iPad.

If you want to choose between them, it comes down to which OS you prefer.

Apple is "We'll look after you. Nothing will crash in this environment, because we've got your back". On the other hand, "You can't do that, because it doesn't fit into our vision".

Android is "Do whatever you want. She'll be fine". Which can also mean "WTF? How did I change my screen to have white text on a white background, and how can I change it back?"

There is no comparison. Ipad 3 by absolute miles.

Then there is Windows 8 tablets coming soon. They won't have any limitations or gimmicks.

  • The questions I have;
    Can iPad3 play flash?
Does iPad3 have a USB port?

I think the retina display is oversold as the iPad1 has a poor display, and most (all maybe) Android tablets I've seen are visually superior but hey they are almost all later generation devices in effect.

Also agree that not being forced to deal with itunes is a valuable thing too.

Some people have their mind set in what they want, and want to justify their decision.
They both have their advantages. if you're a techie, then I find most prefer the Android as it's not locked down and more flexible (such as connecting to USB devices, installing non App store apps, etc). But non techies love the Apple devices for their simplicity, wide range of apps and the cache of having an Apple product.

      • i have to agree with this analysis.

I voted android because i'm anti apple, and i've got android, love it

  • Even though "retina" could be used as a marketing term - it still doesn't negate the fact that it has a massive resolution which would be perfect for viewing websites and photos

I have a computer with less ppi than both devices and i cant see any individual pixels.

  • Not sure if you missed the recent deal but it was $476 for the TF300 from Harvey Norman !!
