Recommendation for Good OBD Diagnostic Tool for Toyota Hilux

I searched Ozbargain forums and this question has not been asked for about two years or more but technology moves on. I would like to buy a good quality OBD diagnostic tool for my 2016 Hilux (diesel). My budget is about $250-$400 (could go higher if justifiable). I am a DIYer home mechanic when I can (within limits!)

Unless somebody can convince me, I don't think I need a bi-directional unit. The only thing that I believe that I would like to be able to do is initiate a DPF cleaning cycle if needed!

Online specs etc, all look glowing for most units, but what do real-world users' experiences say. I would greatly appreciate your views.

For reference, Scotty Kilmer seems to use XTOOL brand quite a lot, if that says anything! Thanks guys and girls for your views!

      Guy is a moron…

Agree hes a total fukn dud. Classic american

      • He's flamboyant, can you give some examples of why he is no good, specifically as a mechanic? I am genuinely curious.

        • +2

Because he is at best a shonky mechanic. Of most videos I have watched, he would be a C grade mechanic. A filter monkey or spare parts replacer at best.

ChrisFix isnt a mechanic, but his videos are much better at being a mechanic than Scotty. We often watch channels like "Just Rolled In" at work on break and the joke is always "I bet that car just came from Kilmer's Garage…" or a car will come into work and the home DIY has had a go at it already and (fropanity) it up… and the joke is… "Wonder if they tried this after watching one of Scotty's videos".

A lot of his videos are just autistic brain in a blender ramblings excreted as verbal diarrhea. He is incoherent and couldn't explain how to get out of a wet paper bag… I really dont understand why he has so many views, as it is painful to listen to him talk.

Another idiot you can add to that bag of (fropanity) wits that shouldn't be doing videos on anything automotive related is that dumbarse Cadogan, who I swear lurks here, because almost every one of his videos comes up on the tail end of some questions that was posed on this forum.

In the beginning, before it was all about the views and ad revenue, John wasn't too bad, but now it's all about pandering to the masses and getting those views up, so it's talking like a retard, antagonising viewers and titty montages. Whatever it takes for the views, hey John?

I have a feeling that Kilmer started out the same way, but as time rolls on, you need to jump a shark or two and become the moron "for the views". I think their personas are largely a byproduct of their thirst for YouTube ad revenue. And it doesn't matter to them, good publicity or bad publicity, so long as you are talking about them and watching their videos.

@pegaxs: Hit the nail on the head about cadogan. I used to think he was alright years ago when he did A Current Affair, now I don't watch any of his vulgar content. Scotty seems to only have click bait videos these days as well.

@JIMB0: "Why x car is bad" and mention it once right at the end

Scotty Kilmer seems to use XTOOL brand quite a lot

    Is avoid that then.

They'd be sponsoring him to use it.

  • Talk to this company. They are extremely helpful. They do have some single vehicle scanners

    https://www.azscanners.com.au/

    • Weird to suggest them specifically? Prices aren't great even, and lots of it is just AliExpress stuff.

    • I'll look into that, thanks

I got one of these for my Hyundai and it seems pretty good.

    • How is this $180 better than a $10 eBay special + $5 torque app?

      • +1

Torque Pro can't read some codes. Some codes it can read and not clear. It can't reset the DPF codes, it can't do a forced DPF burn.

It is primarily used to monitor coolant temp, auto transmission temp, boost revs, intake air temp and many others. I monitor 12 applications through Torque Pro. You can set alarms with Torque Pro. Some vehicle need custom programming for Torque Pro to work. If you search they are available. The protocol may also need to be changed. $10 Ebay dongles are very hit and miss.

        • It sure can. I have made a forced burn button on my torque, just need to research what the code is.

Also have alternator duty cycle, trans temps, torque converter lockup status, gear indicator and many other cool readouts.

          • @HelpMeiCantSee: On specific brands and models I agree but not all vehicles.I have a 2008 model, he has the 2010 update. Torque will do do more on his. Example, mine wont read Engine load, his does. Of course it could be the dongle.

            • @CurlCurl: 2008 is a changeover year that’s probably why. That being said, I had all that stuff on my 04 FTE with the correct Init string

Have the same (an older version anyway) for many years. Had the typical ebay special before but found it wasn't reading all codes. The OBDLink picked up what it was missing.

  • Best option would be to join a hilux / Toyota group on facebook and ask there ,
i use a generic elm Bluetooth adaptor ( about $10 on eBay) and then torque or a similar app.
It wont allow many functions a specialist tool will but its helped me many times even if just to get out of limp home and get the vehicle back to civilisation.

  • I use Foxwell at home. It's pretty good for the price. At work we use G-Scan, but that's probably well outside the budget.

  • If you are mildly tech savvy, a special version of techstream would be best bang for buck.

    • Ahoy there?

      • Sort of. It's available on Amazon, eBay, Ali etc.

        • No Toyota's in my family but good to know.

          • +1

@MS Paint: There are probably similar things for the other brands tools, I know you can get Odis for vag.

Go to newhilux forum and ask there

    • thanks for idea!

  • Mini VCI adapter and Techstream.

  • I am sure something like an ELM 327 would be suitable. I had one for my Holden VE and it worked very well. Here is some info on my use for the VE.

  • Jaycar obd dongle and torque pro app. Done.

  • initiate a DPF cleaning cycle

heat required - just go for a drive in high revs/low gear.

i used Penrite Enviro+ DPF Cleaner 375mL from Supercheap Auto

this seemed to work (i have no exhaust particle reader to measure results, however there was less smoke).

as for a OBD - generic Bluetooth reader from aliexpress + torque (or similar app)

    • heat required - just go for a drive in high revs/low gear.

Sometimes I’d be good to be able to tell it to burn now if you’ve just got on the highway and likely won’t be going that way again for a while. Yes, it should be automatic, but at the same time the car doesn’t know how long you are going to be driving at speed and doesn’t know when you’ll next be driving highway.

I think the cheapest one with advanced functions that you can get is one of the Foxwell NT510 Elite / NT530 / NT710 - kind of the same thing from oldest/slower to newer/faster.
The catch is that you can buy it with advanced support with 1-2 manufacturers, you can add others at a cost and it has only generic OBD for the other makes. And also it good to try to find if it supports the advanced functions that you want for specific make/model (although I think it's well supported for Toyota). Also some listing for those scanners are already preloaded with some make.

You can find it also on the likes of Catch but more expensive

    • nice, thank you!

  • Try Fourby4Diesel on YT - has mentioned Autophix a few times. (He rabbits on a LOT, but there are usually some nuggets of useful information in there if you manage wade through the fluff.)
