As I am going to Singapore in August, can I buy a phone close to my departure date and claim back the GST at the airport?
On a side note, should I buy it in Singapore and save loads of cash?

Hello Beany155,
Firstly… what is a lot to you ?
If you're not a business owner but wish to claim GST then try buying it at a Duty Free store anywhere in Australia, Singapore is an electronics paradise but as queried by Scotty concerning the item's warranty; then in my opinion it would not warrant the hassle of saving a few dollars of our GST.
Ok, I want to buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 but was thinking I could save an extra $50 if I get the GST refund at the airport.. I do prefer aussie warranty but if Singapore prices were considerably less then it was an option..
There is a very famous eletronics shopping centre but can't remember its name, google it and email as many stores for the best price, if it's still attractive then haggle for a better price when you're there and remember… as a foreigner you will be entitled to GST refund by presenting the receipt at Changi Airport upon your departure, good luck.
PS: I was there Sep/2011 and bought a CCTV recorder with 1TB HD for nearly half the price of the cheapest price on ebay, worth a try for your Galaxy for sure.
Thanks for that…
Sim Lim square, heaps of little shops in there.
I haven't been there since 2001 but the prices were a lot better than here and a huge range (I was buying digital camera accessories at the time)

Yes.. that's the one, thank you.
Worth the effort.
Need not be a DUTY FREE store. Any retailer so long as you get a complying Tax Invoice. Even if you get it on an MRO plan with Telstra you can still claim.
Do you get a tax invoice when you get a phone on MRO?
yes u do get it and u can claim the GST as well.. i did it recently for S2 bought it on 24month plan.. Telstra gave me a total invoice of 24 months & i claimed gst…cheers…
For Travel Refund Scheme, check this previous thread which robotdad has produced pretty good summary.
As of whether to buy in Singapore — have you checked the price there? Also you need to consider whether you'll be able to get warranty covered in Australia. Finally, you might save some cash, but probably not loads of them.
