Cool I’ve always wanted one, now I got 2, thanks op

  • +1

Nice if there was one for Android

    • +8

PlantNet works quite well, and is free and ad free

      • Thanks will have a look :)

    • There was an insect identifier a few weeks ago.

      • +3

It doesn't work well, especially for those squashed by tissues.

    • +11

Google lens supports this natively, doesn't it?

      • +1

        Or bing search no app

  • +22

You know plant identification is built into the Camera app on iOS, right???

    See here: https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/identify-plants-flowers-wit…

    • Shhhhh 😝

iplant looks to have been free for years, but it's ad-supported and $7.99 to remove them.

Leaf Identification looks to be a genuine free offer though.

  • Nice use of AI. What’s the accuracy rate like?

    Important to identify poisonous plants.

    • +3

I haven’t used this one, but most of these tools can ID plants to genus kinda reliably, and may be able to identify species which are very common in horticulture. They tend to struggle with Australian plants given the training data sets are often northern hemisphere plants, and in any case accurate ID of Australian native plants to species level, even for an experienced botanist, often involves the use of a microscope and a stack of scientific papers.

So, maybe ok for pointing at a planted ornamental in your local park but don’t expect much more than that.

      • Someone should put some work on an Aussie plants training set.

Interesting name for an app, given the Apple Store indicates Identifiers are used to track users who download it.

The publisher also sports a very dubious website - click the link of the App Store page to see for yourself.

    App developer appears from China.

I’m staying away, and advise others who care about privacy to do the same.

      • +12

This is not about being racist - I’m all for multiculturalism and equality. But China is a surveillance state and Apple indicates the publisher chooses to track users. And their website looks suspect with no contact details available either. That’s not a good image.

      • +8

That’s precisely why many avoid using TikTok - a Chinese company that many suspect share US data with the Chinese government.

        • +5

Yes. I choose to share mine with the NSA instead. The day they want to, missile coming to a bedroom near you. Freedom and democracy coming to you soon.

Ouch for the app developer when google imaging does it for free.

          • -1

            @CalmLemons: Terrible whataboutist argument.

          • @CalmLemons: Exactly! Why give your privacy to China/Russia who can't do anything with it?? Giving it to local and 5 Eyes countries, who can kick in our doors, is so much better lol

      • +1

Dude. TikTok app logs ALL keystrokes and sends it back to China. https://amp.abc.net.au/article/101356198

        • To be precise, the TikTok app can only log keystrokes while you're typing in the app, including the in-app web browser.

          • @theo96: Yes sorry, that was inferred.

        • +1

You are basically repeating WMD talking points without thinking. Ask yourself what can China do? Then, do you think our Gov isn't doing the same? Start speaking out, and see which one kicks in your door first…

          • @Charity:

which one kicks in your door first…

I care about which ones breach companies that hold my data, which then are misused by criminals.

      • So?

      • +2

Tiktok is cancer as an electronic form

        • -1

Is that because TikTok causes your loved ones unrelenting agony and ultimately leads to their premature death in such an inhuman and unspeakable manner that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy?

    • -1

Apple builds in China because they have the best supply chain & the best app developers.
I always avoid CIA based surveillance.

    • +1

interesting no one remember PRISM now and only sinophobia

      • Of course, - in all history someones done something wrong before, so you cant call out bad behaviour.

Only kids and bad actors try that crap reasoning

  • +5

You can use google lens for free on your phone(google image search) I use it to identify more than just plants!

    • More reliable for tracking those who download it apparently..

    • +9

I use Seek by iNaturalist. Link: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/seek-by-inaturalist/id13532241…

iNaturalist is a joint team of the California Institute Of Sciences and National Geographic Society. They don’t track users and it doesn’t have advertising. Those are instant +1s from me.

It works really well for me, I’ve even identified birds by taking a photo with my Olympus camera with zoom lens, then pointing this at the camera screen, while digitally zoomed in on the camera.

Haven’t been able to identify particular eucalyptus trees and some fungi but that can be hard. There’s been plenty I couldn’t identify heaps more that I could so I’m happy with it.

      • You had me at “joint”…

      • I just tried opening iNaturalist after not using it for a while and it's now asking to store personal information before i can use it.

        • I just installed that tonight (it’s different to Seek), it did ask me to login or create an account if I wanted to submit my findings. I was able to skip it and explore what other people have spotted/submitted in my area, which is quite a bit. I might create an account and be part of it.

          • @Corgsta: It's good for that. I didn't realise you were talking about a separate app by them. So I installed Seek and tried it on my quince but it came up with dicon, whatever that is.
I don't know why a free app can't beat a paid one for AI stuff.

This app is full of ads and charge $7.99 as IAP for full version.

  • Any apps for Root Identification?

    • +5

      Tinder and Bumble appear popular.

      • What about Grindr?

  • +1

I use PictureThis. I have compared many plants side by side with google lens and PictureThis wins hands down every time. It will ask you to purchase the app every time you open it but you just back space and it works great. Has helped me through many assignments.

  • +2

Just tried this app on a young quince I have and it came back with Cordia sebestena.
The iPhone built in identification came back with hibiscus.
But in one attempt the "picture this" app got quince. That app is a bit more expensive though.
Shame as I wanted to stop paying for that one but it keeps working well.

  • apple photos has to is feature also built in

  • Can anyone share the experience how it is compare to Google Lens.

  • Downloaded then read all the tracking comments so deleted.

  • +2

iNaturalist is much better (will be reviewed by an expert) and is free.

  • +1

This feature is built in on iPhone.

  • +3

whats the point of being free when have to purchase inside to avoid ads.

  • +1

    Can this identify/smell cum trees?

    • They're called camphor laurels and they're a noxious weed that should be removed from this country by any means necessary

  • +1

The free app which contains ads and by removing the ads, you will need to pay $7.99 IAP

  • Free junk app

  • How is it a deal when you need to pay $7.99 IAP to remove ads?

  • very tricky
