Netflix Profile Transfer Now Available - Move Your Profile to a New Account

Move your profile to a new account. Or, read this as a new feature to help enable account sharing. Move your profile to a friend's account or vice versa and split the cost :D

From an email I got from Netflix:

Introducing Profile Transfer
We’re excited to announce that we’ve added a new feature called Profile Transfer to help make life changes easier. Profile Transfer makes it easy for anyone using your account to transfer an existing profile – including recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings, saved games and more – to a new account.

What is Profile Transfer?
The Profile Transfer feature allows people on your account to transfer a profile – including recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings, saved games and more – to their own membership that they pay for. Learn more.
We will never transfer your payment information to the new account, and there is no charge for enabling this feature. Kids profiles and PIN-protected profiles cannot be transferred. All saved games and game progress connected to a profile will move to the new account.

Who is this for?
People move. Families grow. Relationships change. Life happens, and Profile Transfer can help make one small aspect of life changes easier.

Netflix didn't really have to implement this - I can't see it assisting their bottom line. It's a great enhancement from a usability perspective though, and cost management which I touched on earlier. Very cool of them.

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: It can only move you to a Brand New account but the concept remains similar

EDIT 2: No, concept doesn't remain similar - see first comment in thread.

I can't see it assisting their bottom line.

Why not? New account = another monthly cost

Move your profile to a friend's account or vice versa and split the cost

Correction: double the cost

A lot of us will login to Netflix one day and see "our algorithm has detected your account has reached the maximum household number. But good news, for $22.99 a month you can migrate your profile to your own account and start watching again".

      • Or Argentinian/Turkish equivalent of that line ;)

Netflix trying to stop haemorrhaging subs by finding ways to get more $'s out of them, again.

Which is arguably what killed Blockbuster, trying to wring more money out of people with late fees. By the time Blockbuster got rid of late fees and created their own streaming service (which was better than Netflix because it had everything on it due to Blockbuster's decades long relationship with distributors) it was too late, people had already moved on from Blockbuster.

      • Yeah for sure. Netflix is still huge but the bucket is really leaky now and unless they can find a real way of providing better value, rather than flinging ads or making people pay more, it will continue to empty.

I quit my sub with them. Very few movies or shows of value and disappointing fragmentation of series and movies they do have. That said I am trying a Disney sub with the flybuys deal now and I won't be continuing that either. Boring crap or I've already seen it.

I suspect this exists for one simple reason. If they follow through with their crack down on password sharing, they are banking on people wanting to migrate their profiles. Suspect it may not work out as they plan and many will just not bother to sign up on a new plan or simply just use mobile devices(which i believe arent subject to the same restrictions)n and just keep sharing accounts.

Interesting how OP read this as Netflix doing something nice and not to their financial benefit, whereas I read it as Netflix trying to offer a seamless way for people to start their own subscription and take their profile with them.

I think OP came to that realisation after, but wasn't the initial thought
