Kathmandu Online is also one of the retailers on Amex Vogue Cashback offer

  • +9

Amazingly enough bought $1300 RRP in clothes and only paid $152 last week. Even better my +1 did it, couldn’t be happier in those bargains,

    • How is that?

      • +1

Some items 80% off clearance, plus extra 20% off bonus, then spend $250 and get $100 off.

    • +13

Their rrp is made up. Shit products.

      • Yeah Kathmandu has historically been low tier products at high tier prices.

Comically ridiculous sales on things like polyester towels (marked down from $50!).

And basic shirts (down from $80!).

When you come to realise there is only about 3-4 actual material production companies in the world for outdoor tech you can start to compare prices very quickly.

Unless it's got a brand name material it's almost certainly a EoL patent that has been superceded or a "near enough copy" to not get caught by patent protections - Velcro vs Hook and loop etc.

        • What retailers would you recommend instead?

  • Thanks OP!

Use discounted giftcards to pay to further sweeten the deal?

    • +2

It says "Cashback is ineligible on purchase or redemption of gift cards". I don't think the coles master card is considered gift card.

  • Just in time as I need to replace my Teva sandals!!!!

  • Hhmm looking for a travel bag.. any one has experience throwing kathmandu packs in checked luggage?

    • +4

Still got my backpack purchased in 2004, spent 10 years overseas, and it doesn’t have a single flaw. Recommended.

      • Mind to share the model or series?

Edit: sorry perhaps no longer sold for 10+ years.. how bout the size? Looking for 55-65

Product quality control varies. And quality varies between products. Some are great, others rubbish!

New Kathmandu pack bought on sale (45L used as carry on Europe trip) had worrying minor stitching & fabric failures after 3 months.
Returned, but was told not a manufacturing fault - tough! No longer sold, so can't replace. Did my own repairs. Certainty not good with a few month old pack.

Kathmandu self inflating mattress failed on first use @2500m on trip in Alps in Japan. Very disappointed as had to cancel week long hike.
Contacted Kathmandu, explained am in Japan… "just return to store". Was replaced on return to Oz, but soon failed. Fought for refund as wasn't going to risk carrying on trip to find it failed again!

Recommend not buying gear you need to rely on from Kathmandu. Test gear close to stores - in case need to return!!

        • Any idea if the Nowaki 32L Pack is any good or if it's junk? I keep hearing their gear is hit and miss but for $80 i think it might be worth a try…. https://www.kathmandu.com.au/sale/nowaki-32l-women-s-pack-cl…

          • +1

            @epmonp6: No idea. Good luck.
Only bought 1 Kathmandu pack - never again. But others have positive comments.

Depends a lot on your use.
Mine was used travelling a bit rough through Scotland & the Islands, moving on most days. That was the intended use I explained to staff. Wasn't up to it.

Some treat their packs far kinder, like normal travel baggage & have a very different experience.

Kathmandu gear is more travel oriented, rather than for serious outdoors experiences. But good stores for that more technical gear are getting hard to find.

Packs & boots are something you need to try on & experience how they fit you. It's best to have good advice, rather than someone who just wants to make a sale.

Previous (dearer) Lowe Alpine pack handled much harsher conditions (12 day hike sometimes in near blizzard conditions in Tasmanian mountains, 4 months on a trip) & was in use for 20 years. But by then needed regular repairs to harness attachment points.
It was a far better quality pack.

            • @INFIDEL: Any thoughts about Osprey packs?

              • +1

                @netbirds82: Sorry no.

Changed priorities. Now travel very light & take few shorter hikes in mountains. Carrying less in less adverse conditions, means less requirement for a good pack. It's freeing!

Have been using a small daypack for trips overseas of a month or longer. Got good free 25L ones from a promotion.

So haven't bought a pack in over a decade of budget overseas travel (pre-Covid).

            • +1

@INFIDEL: Thanks, thats really valuable insights! This pack will be used by someone who does the odd 1-2day hike here and there and likely wont cop a lot of harsh conditions or rough use. Fingers crossed its functionally ok and and if materials are low quality then hopefully that can be lived with. Thabks again, great info 👍

              • +1

@epmonp6: For those purposes seems suitable. Reviews on Kathmandu are positive.

Lots of pockets. Good air ventilation - needed in hot weather. Fairly light @900g. Designed for women - not so long up the back. But every body is different.

As long as size is large enough for your use. Should last a while.

Only way to know is to try it on… And use it.

                • @INFIDEL: Thanks again, grabbed one. $70 after the amex $10 cashback seals the deal.

    • i have one of their foldable backpacks from ~2005 that i used extensively for day trips walking around town and shopping. not a hole or rip and i carried some heavy objects, some of them with sharp corners (model cars in boxes). when it was time to come home, i stuffed it full, tied the shoulder straps together as best i could and checked it in. did this a few times and never had an issue. impressively durable for such thin and seemingly flimsy material. that said, i'm not sure how the current versions stack up. i did buy the foldable duffle bag from a sale a few months back and that will be for my mum to test on her upcoming overseas shopping trip

  • Birthday voucher can be used to get cashback?

    • +2

Doubt it. As per the conditions:

You may not be eligible for Cashback:

If a gift card is purchased or used as payment.
If a coupon code is used that is not listed on Cashrewards.

      • Yea, be careful if you're banking on the cashback. if the voucher is more than the cashback then just risk it.

    • cashrewards says no, but in my experience any vouchers i've used have always been approved so far.

  • Bought 4 x Flaxton Long sleeve, Cashback still hasn't tracked

    • +1

Have a few of those Flaxton LS shirts.
      Comfy 55% hemp & 45% cotton.

Has been a clearance item for over a month. Few sizes & colours left now - none of the ones I bought.

But sleeves can be narrow to roll up - returned for next size larger.
As using for travel, like enough room to put thin hiking thermal underneath in cold. (Bought last year from Kathmandu clearance for $2.25 ea with voucher.)

Were $120, clearance @$40, bought for $20 a month back with usual $20 voucher.
Just swapped size & got $8 refund. Great value for $12!

      Now $32 less $5.82 cashback.
Ordered another delivered free to local store.

Had just requested store to order one in for me - then saw this Deal!
Manager (who knows me) was happy to cancel "if you can get it cheaper - go for it!"

    • Same here. Not tracked

      • 1-7d to track. Up to 100d to payout!
Kathmandu computer system is slow - according to staff, so expect tracking will be very slow from them.

      • Tracked for me under 2hrs.

  • CashRewards only available through Desktop mode if using mobile.

    • +1

can go thru CR app, works well too, i never had issues with their app

      • So long since I've used to it - forgot about it. Usually better tracking.

  • Would people recommend the tents from this store?

    • +4

      Nope, garbage

    • Frayed after a couple of uses and was returned.

  • Forgot. To. Cashback. $100.
    Bummer
But on the flip side I might return anything that doesn’t fit right.

    • +1

      Cancel & reorder.

I order items separately (in case of return - doesn't affect other cashback) & get free delivery to store just down road.
Of course $100 order gets free home delivery.

Kathmandu clothes can have different sizing in different colour of same product. Told that by staff! So returning / exchanging is unfortunately very normal.

  • +6

Aren't Kathmandu just permanently on sale anyway? Can't really trust their "full price"

    • +1

As always, no doubt. Nobody should trust full price.

    • Ignore the RRP! There are bargains there.

Clearance is a good time to buy, even better with 20% off + 20% cashback!
Or with $20 vouchers for members

Bought "$120RRP" shirt for $36 less $5.82 cashback. Good looking shirt I've bought before & love wearing @$40 (less $20 voucher).
Good value at that price. Most I've spent at Kathmandu in a year.

  • Thank you! Just pulled the trigger on some hiking boots. Normally $250. Paid $179 after cashback

  • Waiting for Shopback to retaliate.

  • website went down now

    • No problem seen here.

  • Official brand for all ‘Karens’

  • +1

    Ordered and cashback tracked.

    • How long between ordering and receiving the tracking email? I ordered at 2pm and no tracking email

      • Received tracking email 2hr after ordering mid afternoon.

      • 30 min

  • Good deal with the stacked discounts from Cashrewards and Amex. Thanks OP
