Inexpensive way to travel to South America?

So I've been keeping my eye on flights to go to South America in December 2022/January 2023 and flights have started from 5k and gone up to 8k-12k in the last month or so. Why??? :-(
I'm looking at departing Sydney and doing a cruise in Antarctica that I have as a gift.. Then travelling around south America for a bit - hoping to do inca trail, etc.

Does anybody have any suggestions on the most inexpensive/efficient way to get over to south America? The cruise starts in either Argentina or Chile (depends which cruise I choose). I wasn't sure whether there are some other tour companies that might even include free international flights with other smaller tours I could book either side of the Antarctica Cruise.

If anyone knows any hacks or help, that would be great.
Thanks

It's late and when I saw December I just assumed it must be 2023, only to reprocess and realise you said December 2022.

You're looking to book during peak season, in two months time, at a time when everyone is looking to do some post-covid travelling. It won't be cheap and I don't know why you thought the price would go down closer to the date. And if directly booking flights are 8k-12k, it is unlikely that anybody is giving them out for free with "small tours". You will have more luck booking it for later next year.

Not sure about now but pre-covid, Inca trail required a fair bit of booking ahead. If you haven't chosen the Antarctica cruise yet, you may want to check what kind of prebooking time it might need too.

Include free flights?….. nothing is truely free my friend. Always consider the total cost and other strings attached.

Maybe just either get to LAX or SFO on a budget flight and then book a flight to Santiago directly from there using Expedia or similar. Yeah sure, you'll need an ESTA , visa just to transit and a very long flight etc but you could also have a stopover in san fran, LA , or some other US destination.

I'm just looking on Expedia now and you can get flights with Delta from LAX to Santiago for $780 USD return in December… probably depends on your dates though.

    • This is the obvious answer.

I have about 18 sets of headphones which need to brought back from South America if you are interested?

  • Many South American students are just buying separate tickets to reduce the cost. This will reduce the price a lot but its also a risk if a flight is delayed or cancelled.
