Did you edit? Sorry, thought it said regular price

          • -3

@Grandpipe: looks like a price error to me…

    • +1

      The 64GB is $219

      • -2

        It clearly says 128GB

    • +4

      No, you've read it wrong…

        • +3

Nice edit of your original comment…

          • +6

@GOMOOTYPRO: You can't edit comments once it's been replied to.

  • +4

looks like the prices are flipped?

  • Can I install kodi? how does it compare to nvidia shield?

    • +1

      I'd go with the shield…

      • +1

        Reason being?

        • -3

          I already have two shields…

          • +1

@jv: Why you chose the shields over apple tv though

            • @juns: I have both and think Apple TV is better unless you want foxtel now and kodi, you can get kodi on Apple TV with a work around but not worth it imo

            • +4

              @juns:

Why you chose the shields over apple tv though

Because I didn't want Apple to dictate what I can watch.

            • @juns: I believe the Shield is the only one that can play pretty much anything you throw at it. Apple TV only has the capability of decoding audio codecs using by streaming platforms, so is unable to deal with Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio for example if you have Blu-ray rips.

        • +2

Reason being if you like slower interface and restrictions by Google (revoking subs from foreign countries for Disney) then go for Nvidia.

        • +4

I have both. shield >>>> daylight >>> apple tv
apple tv is a 2nd gen
shield just does everything and more. apple tv does what apple wants you to do with it

          • +3

@jasonc: I have 3 shields and 3 Apple TVs for different purposes. IMO the both have their areas of strength. If you want something for IPTV then nvidia with Tivi mate is king. If you just want something for streaming services with no desire for tinkering etc then Apple TV is superior for me. Apple TV UI is also a lot less buggy and clean than the shield.

            • +1

@Raptors: Agree. I found Plex have more issues on the Shield. but I found the shield remote easier to use. the apple siri remote circular touch pad is too sensitive.

              • @cheach: Yep I’m with you there, the Apple Remote is a pain at times (the only black touchpad remote was even worse). The shield remote beats it hands down.

The shield is also pretty much needed by my in my cinema room as it is able to pass Dolby atmos and dts x from rips using Plex, something Apple TV isn’t able to do yet. Yet Apple has more streaming apps that are supported surprisingly.

There is still no all in one media player that does everything/ticks all boxes for me, so I am stuck buying both for all my rooms.

              • +2

@cheach: I turned the touch part of the siri remote off as it was annoying to use.

              • @cheach: no issues with Plex on mine (except not successfully being able to make it my plex server)

RPi4 does a great job, assuming you can find stock ..

      • I have RPi4, but it does not do DV now does it?

        • Nah, never likely to happen, requires licensing. Easy to avoid DV though, and it does 4K, HDR, etc without issues.

    • +3

Google Chromecast (the newer one) has Google TV which can run the Kodi app perfectly well for $79

      • Latest Android 12 upgrade finally fixed surround+ Atmos for me but broke hdr.

    • +3

Not easily. If you want to watch ripped Blu-rays, shield is the only way to get TrueHD + Atmos. If you don't care about that, the paid app Infuse is great for watching content off a NAS. If you're only using it for streaming, I personally prefer the UI + UX of the Apple TV. It also doesn't have ads like Google TV.

    • +1

      Can I install kodi?

      For your average user, no.

There are ways but it comes down to either having to install it every 7 days or pay for an Apple developer account at about $100 per year.

      • Interesting, does that work for iPhone apps too?
I’d almost be willing to pay $100 to install YouTube+ so I can tell Google to suck it.

Also thanks OP, snagged a preorder.

        • +1

Apple Dev account would let you sign & install unsigned apps so: depends if YouTube+ is a .ipa iPhone app.

Gotta fork out around $100 per year though.

          • @lychnis: Thank you for the additional info - and after investigating, yes it is an .ipa.
Something I guess I have to now consider; $100 is a lot, but it’s still better than the $180 Google wants for YouTube premium.
            Cheers.

            • +1

@Proliferation: alright. btw make sure the app is compatible with your device

the apps from iPhone won't work on ATV or vice-versa.

iirc you can mirrorplay iPhone to ATV but I haven't tried in a while.

    • +2

MrMC is basically Kodi, at least for my purposes. Watching live tv with tvheadend using it right now.

  • +1

How does this compare with Google Tv with Chromecast?

    • +8

Just how Ferrari compares to Camry.

      • +5

        That’s a valid point but I reckon it’s more like V8 vs 4 cylinders.

Not sure why you got neg.

Also, Plex on iOS works better until they sort out the issues/stability on Android.

        • +1

Does anyone else have colour space issues with HDR content in plex tvOS?

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Might be your TV settings?
Don’t have issues on my Sony TV.

            • +2

@cheach: Same, no issues with Plex on the shield at all. Plays everything I throw at it.

      • I have pre ordered, hopefully it gets honored.

      • LOL

    • Depends on which OS is your phone running

  • Wow, nice deal! Let's see if it holds up!

  • +3

Ordered for now - Cheers OP - Can alway cancel before they ship ( if they honour it)…

  • Have Amazon been known to honour price errors in the past?

    • Yep

    • +2

Yes. It is only $30 difference. Its not much

      • +6

Yeah $30 is not much to make it a deal worth getting

      • But its apple

    • +1

Got the airpods 2 for 319 just like this deal

  • Thanks OP
Ordered one in the hope it’ll be honoured

  • +1

Would there be a point in upgrading my original Apple TV 4k?

    • +1

Don’t see a point upgrading for media playback unless you want to play games.

    • From the the first gen 4K, there are a couple of small advantages:
      - better remote
      - support for 60fps HDR 4K video (very little content available)

From the second gen, the only point is a better CPU for games. Nothing else.

  • +10

Buy first think later, can always cancel before they ship if I get buyer’s remorse 😂

    • +3

      Can never Buy2Much.

      • +1

        Yes I should get help…

  • +1

Thanks OP. Buy now think later

  • +1

What's the point in getting this and what's the original price

    • +1
      1. FOMO. 2. More
  • +2

    Bought now think later!!!

  • +2

OP nice deal mate. Sometimes you just get lucky!

    • +2

It’s only $30 difference from rrp on Apple’s site.

      • +1

That aside. A15 bionic + 128GB shows just how much of a ripoff the iPhone is! This is an iPhone 14 in a box.

$219 for that level of spec is bananas! You could play games on this if Apple did that kind of console like thing.

        • +7

I think your logic if very flawed. You compared pricing based on a chip and storage space neglecting all other tech that comes into the phone.

          • +1

@Brakus: In Apple land $219 for this level of spec is a deal. Extra 64GB in the phone or MacBook can cost hundreds more.

            • +3

@checkingthisout: I cannot believe that I have to point this out but here goes. The $219 box does not come with:
4 cameras - tons of tech crammed into this
              5G
              Mobile call capability
Display - tons of tech as well

That’s got to cost something, right?

              • +1

                @Brakus: $219 is a deal to me. Do I have to explain why it’s a deal to me? 😅 It’s an A15 bionic + 128Gb of Ram.

                The deals gone anyway.

                • -2

@checkingthisout: Im not disputing that. Its a deal but not much compared to rrp.
Im only disputing what you said about an iphone 14 being a rip off based on the apple tv specs

              • @Brakus: You are right but you are also wrong b3caude apple charges more for their phones because they just can (they rip consumers off in that department because they have the market). Apple TV stuff is priced right b3cause they are not dominant in the market yet. Therefore they charge a fair price so they can compete with others like roku. But Apple hope to make more money by selling apple TV subscrip4ions ontop of this device.

So in all, Apple phones are a hell of a RIPOFF. But consumers are willing to pay (they somehow have an excuse to justify them being ripped off).

                • @shegeloaf: I disagree with you on this. Having used Android and iOS, the ux of iOS is definitely better. I can see why people prefer iOS over android.
Top apple phone is just $100 more than the top non foldable Samsung phone so it is not that far off. Calling it a rip off for $100 difference is unfair.

There is a reason why consumers are willing to pay for them and why Apple dominates the market. It is evidence that Apple makes better phones.

                  • +1

@Brakus: I'm not talking about usability. I'm talking about the price of the whole unit when you consider the hardware and software components.

SAMSUNGS are also RIPOFFS. Neither technology is worth the price they are charging.

                    • @shegeloaf: My point was $30 to upgrade storage makes the prices Apple charges for MacBook and iPhone upgrades look like a ripoff!

Apple will charge $300 to get 8GB Ram. And $300 for 256gb of storage. In a MacBook Air.

Apple will charge $500 for going from 128gb to 512gb or $180 to go from 128gb to 256gb.

But this little box is only $30 to go from 64gb to 128gb. And it’s all the same components.

The iPhone upgrades and MacBook upgrades are a ripoff. No one should defend that lol

Let me know when the iPhone costs $60 instead of $180 to go from 128gb to 256gb.

        • Yep it's an iPhone 14… except without a screen, battery, face ID, secure enclave, antenna, speaker, charging port, camera, optical stabilisation and the circuitry to support all of the above. And not waterproof.

Also kind of wrong on the other point… Apple are doing the console thing. You can pair a controller and there is a big library of games on Apple Arcade. Previous gen suffered badly from weak CPU, this might actually be a decent casual gaming console.

      • +5

You have no idea what we would do to save $30 lol.

        • +1

Plus it’s a price error. From Amazon. Buy now think later applies.

  • Does Ethernet port support usb connected on modem? Can we play the videos stored on hdd connected to modem? If yes, might be a reason to change from shield to this new apple tv.

    • Ethernet enables you to connect the Apple TV box to your network via a physical cable, rather than WiFi. Less problems when playing 4K movies encoded in very high bit rate.

Accessing files on your modem USB connect drive you’ll need some sort of file explorer app, which you can install via the App Store. Similar to how you would access them on Shield.

Shield has Plex server. Why not connect your hdd to the shield and use Plex?

  • +5

The comments making me think the nirmal price has to be a big number like 1k but only $30 difference lol, not a deal worth getting unless planning to get it anyway

    • +1

Planned on getting anyway so it's a free upgrade.

  • +1

    It's only 30 dollars difference though…

    • +7

You get 64GBs extra. Also it's Apple so $30 isn't too bad.

  • +1

Having LG C9 with apps and AirPlay… Do I need this?

    • +2

      Do it!

    • +3

No. I suggest checking youtube videos before buying

    • +1

I have LG C1 - purchased this AppleTV anyway. Smoother user interface and seamless integration with ipad and mac computer. Not a necessary purchase, but does make the experience more pleasant.

    • +2

I have the C8 and an apple tv. The apple tv video playback isn't as choppy as the c8 with airplay but pictures are fine. Another reason I have the apple tv though is the home hub feature which means I can use apple homekit to open my garage door, my gate and turn on the coffee machine from my phone.

      • Only the 128GB version will do the hub feature (Thread/Matter support)

  • Does one of these give you access to Apple TV, or you still have to subscribe monthly?
