Good to see the article title is completely misleading…

    Title:

Aussie Toyota drivers to be included in massive $1billion payout after popular car brand allegedly hid vehicle emissions

    Content:

The lawyer estimated a settlement in the case, if proven in court, could reach between $500million and $1billion.

It's the Daily Mail; what did you expect?

      • +4

Nothing more. My expectations were met.

    • it's the daily mail lol

though they've already settled a similar case in the US

      • Maybe you could change your title? It is just as misleading.

        • that might be because it's the same title

@[Deactivated]: ok. Thanks for sharing quality clickbait with us. Much appreciated…

@iamherenow: fixed, though i thought it better to keep the same title, given the main point was the article. would sir like anything else?

    • dont forget the lawyer taking a massive cut too!

  • Does this mean there will be cheaper prices for Toyotas?

    • Not for you !

    • +2

More expensive I am afraid. How else will Toyota pay for the fine/settlement?

  • +3

Unlike the overly emotional VW drivers that pretended to care I suspect that the majority of hilux, LC, and prado drivers not only won’t care, but a good chunk of them won’t even know what emissions are…

Wouldn't have these issues if you just made EV's where the fronts didnt break off from underneath them. And the Toyota Aus bigwig seems a little more stupid today with regards to the comments they made the other day that basically EV's were pointless and that consumers needed the choice of engines to drive their vehicles and that cleaner options were available, it just seems not from Toyota.

Toyota is slowly becoming the next irrelevant car maker and will slowly slide down the shit chute the same way that Honda did. Their blatant arrogance when it comes to what consumers want is starting to show through. I get it, Toyota are huge and they can basically make a vehicle and say "take it or leave it…" but the problem is, as more peoiple start looking for cheaper to run vehicles, Toyota's arrogance is going to leave them well behind the 8 ball.

I read a report of that speech and took a different view from it.
      I thought he said:
      - Toyota has been working on reducing CO2 emissions for decades (with little recognition)
      - EVs are fine, but not everyone wants to take that leap; some want the transition via hybrids. The quote I saw was "Toyota is not opposed to battery electric vehicles…we believe that to get to carbon neutrality, you have to take everyone on the journey – you have to have a solution for the market you’re operating”"
      Some other reported quotes:
"…carbon is the enemy here, not the powertrain…"
"…diversity of technologies that takes everybody on the journey is a way of getting [to this goal]."

      I don't have a Toyota BTW.

It's moreso that Toyota do see it as a multiple prong approach, rather than just a unilateral road towards pure EV ownership, which I think he was just sick of responding to and went off the cuff a bit. Many country buyers don't want EV, and you'll see those comments on the articles from the other day, and Toyota Aus know that

      • @ the end of the day, it is going to be a mix of powertrains.

        • 100% and that's what Sean Hanley was trying to say

          • @spackbace: Yup,& he is pretty well on the money.

            • @Hackney: toyota are only selling what their factories are geared up to make

if you didnt have factories making hybrids you wouldnt be pushing them… they've been on this bandwagon for 25yrs plus

              there's slimmer margins on EVs

some companies are just want to leverage their sunk costs for as long as possible

              • @tonyjzx: Bandwagon?

                Lol

So how would you describe the multiple companies who have followed suit and joined Toyota in making hybrids after Toyota released the hybrid patents?

                • @spackbace: They did, but they were also sued over the use of Hybrid technology by a Soviet Engineer who immigrated to the USA.Alex Severinsky in 1994 patented a system for powering petrol- Electric Hybrid automobiles.Toyota has been using his system since 1997 without payment or permission.Toyota settled the patent infringement case out of court. The case had dragged on for six years.Had the commission sided with the engineer it could have barred Toyota from importing Prius & other Hybrids.

@Hackney: watch the toyota shill disappear into the ether now…

anyone knows ICE is dead long term and that means hybrids too

what a company tool this guy is….absolutely shameless… still has the taste of akio in his mouth i think

                    also how good is hydrogen!

                    • @tonyjzx: Yep, farmers are gonna love having pure EV utes for driving into town, where town is a thousand kms away

                      Good thinking 99

                      • @spackbace: oh yeah lets drag out the half of 1% population as if that matters to the majority of us…. there will awlays be edge cases… whats next? those poor people in extraction industries

                        shill

i see you company man… go back to your hydrogen corolla

                        • @tonyjzx: Yep, coz country folk are edge cases in this country…

Dunno what you're smoking, but can I have some too?

                        • @tonyjzx: You are really off the mark, sorry, but you are.

    • @pegaxs,Hey, leave my Honda alone!!

  • Don't even try! Hell would have to freeze over before OzBargainers turn against Toyota! lol
