Is There a Website That Recommends TV Shows/Movies Based on Your Likes?

Hi all,
As per the title really. Are there any websites that provide recommended TV shows or movies to watch based on others you've enjoyed? Like Goodreads or Steam Recommender but for TV/Movies? I.e. add some things I've watched, and it gives me recommendations based on lots of things I've enjoyed. Does IMDB do this, or is there some other website? I had a look at a few Google results but they didn't seem to be what I was after.

FWIW I don't have Netflix, so looking for things that don't rely on that.

Thanks!

This looks like exactly what I'm after! Thanks!

I prefer not to decide what to watch based on my likes. If I did that, I'd end up living in a narrow world, where I'm always doing and watching the same kind of thing.

Instead, I prefer to watch things that are objectively good. I know these things are technically subjective, but to find out what most people like, I do a bit of research, mainly in the form of reading reviews.

Basically, in my experience, if the IMDB average review score is really high, and Rotten Tomatoes score is also really high, the movie/series will be enjoyable and satisfying.

If the IMDB score is really low and Rotten Tomatoes score is really high, the movie/series will either be quite artistic or will tackle some serious themes, but it won't be very easy to watch or exciting.

If the IMDB score is really high and Rotten Tomatoes score is really low, the movie/series will generally be very easy to watch or exciting/funny, but it may rely on cliches or a formulaic storyline and won't be very deep or tackle serious themes.

If the IMDB score AND the Rotten Tomatoes score are extremely low, the movie/series will be utterly crap.

If the user reviews are high it's good. If the "critics" reviews are high, it's usually not good.

      • But what if they're both high??

        • Then it’s good.

    • That sounds a reasonable approach, and would generate some "out of the ordinary" alternatives, but my question is more about how to come up with the movie/series to check the ranking of in the first place? Do you just scroll through the top ranked things on IMDB?

Yeah it's pretty annoying to have to google every title (which is generally what I do).

The Amazon Prime app on the TV includes the IMDB rating, but you have to open up each movie/series to see the rating.

Usually word of mouth for me. I got way too many shows and movies I need to catch up on so don't need to go looking for new things to watch.

        • I'm like that with PC Games and audio books!
This is more for my wife, who regularly complains that she doesn't have anything to watch. I wouldn't object to having a series that we can both enjoy together, but they are few and far between :(
The Ipcress File (2022 version) was one we recently watched, which sent me on this quest. Was very enjoyable, but once it's gone, you're left trying to fill the void with questionable life choices.

I've started avoiding anything produced by Netflix lately, they've really not made much that's decent in the last couple of years. It's annoying that Google leans heavily towards Netflix productions in its results when searching for new series or films.

Try Apple TV+. One month subscription will cost you $4.99, and you could finish watching everything on there within 2 months, then you can cancel your subscription.

There are some really good series on there now, including Black Bird (IMDB: 8.2, Rotten Tomatoes: 97%), Bad Sisters (IMDB: 8.3, Rotten Tomatoes: 100%), Slow Horses (IMDB: 7.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 95%) Severance (IMDB: 8.7, Rotten Tomatoes: 97%). These are all way better than the latest shows on Netflix. I also liked the Afterparty, Invasion and Suspicion. The movies on Apple TV+ have not been as good though.

Oh I don't pay for content. But yeah Apple TV is putting out some good stuff, really enjoyed Severance. Currently enjoying The Patient which is from Hulu.

    Try IMDB ?

    • I noticed last night that they have a recommendation section, will look into it as well.

  • MovieLens also seems promising.

  • I like to find a reviewer whose taste matches mine to some degree, then check out their recommendations. Or the contrary. For example if David Stratton raves about a movie I avoid it like the plague.
