Getting New 2-in-1 Laptop End of 2022

I am considering to get a new 2-in-1 laptop and finally come down to these options:

  • Microsoft Surface Pro 8 i7 1185G7 2880x1920 120Hz 16GB 256GB ($1708) 512GB ($2023) 287mm x 208mm x 9.3mm 891g
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 9 i7 1255U 2880x1920 120Hz 16GB 256GB ($2294) 512GB ($2699) 287mm x 209mm x 9.3mm 879g
  • Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9315) i7 1250U 2880x1920 60Hz 16GB 256GB ($2560) 512GB ($2640) 292.5mm x 201.2mm x 7.4mm 736g
  • ASUS ROG Flow Z13 i9 12900H 3840x2400 60Hz 16GB 1TB ($2999) 302mm x 204mm x 12mm 1.1kg

Obviously SP8 is at its cheapest now, not sure if that $600ish extra for SP9 is worthwhile for the 11th gen to 12th gen upgrade (but less the headphone jack).
Dell is around the same price of SP9, I like its the lightest and thinnest, but it has only a 60Hz screen and a slightly less powerful CPU.
Finally Z13 is the most powerful of all, however it is also the thickest and heaviest.

I don't play PC game, all these are good candidates to me. I do like something light and thin but also with a good screen. Dell is a no-brainer for me if its a 120Hz screen. And I have no good reason to get Z13, but a much more powerful 2-in-1 only slightly more expensive than a SP9 with double the storage, why not?

Could someone please give me some insights? Thanks

For some insight, I still use a Surface Pro 3, albeit not daily, but it works and functions fine for basic office use and meeting note-taking etc during travel or site visits.

Not sure why you want a 120 Hz screen specifically if non-gamer. Sure it's smoother scrolling but not life changing.

You'll be fine with the SP8 unless have any demanding tasks needing more multi-cores which seems unlikely if you're looking at portable options.

    • Hey thank you. I just believe that once you tried 120Hz scrolling, you can't go back to 60Hz anymore. Hows the battery with your SP3 though? Has it aged and not holding much power now?

Battery's honestly pretty good for it's age. I can watch 4-5 hours of videos on plane without needing to charge.

I have been through at least 3 official chargers though, they don't seem to last very well but I'm sure improved since.

I agree, 120Hz should be standard on all higher-end equipment (phones, tablets, laptops, consoles). Whilst I understand the argument for 30Hz for low-end equipment. However, there is definitely a notable change to battery draw, so it depends on the user.

That SP8 looks okay, but it is using the Intel 11th-gen chipset. On desktops the 12th-gen was a massive upgrade, so I think for laptops you should see similar changes. So despite the discounted price, I think you should skip over that one.

I would be targeting a laptop which has the AMD r7-6800u if I was you. It would provide a crazy battery life, more stable performance, and the graphical quality is acceptable from the built in RDNA-2 iGPU. The only thing better is a M1 Pro chipset in an Apple MacBook Pro.

        SP8 256GB.

With the savings, invest in a cloud backup service and love life.

  • surface prices:
    $1273 = i5 8GB (Standard)
    $1498 = i5 16GB
    $1708 = i7 16GB

    +$200 for RAM upgrade
    +$200 for CPU upgrade
    from standard i5 8gb to i716gb

Is $200 worth it for a CPU upgrade? - seems to be only a 10% performance boost (range: 8%-13%).

I wonder if these are the new normal prices ???
    XMas🎄sales ??

    hmmm…. decisions, decisions……
