[NSW] Mobile Phone Detection Camera(s) To Be Trialed To Detect Seatbelt Offences (From NOV. 2022)

In November 2022, one of the mobile phone detection cameras in the Greater Sydney region
will be used to detect seat belt offences to verify that the system works well.

Images of potential seat belt offences will be subject to pre-verification and then reviewed by Transport for NSW, to test the proposed process.
These images will be deleted within a month and no fines will be issued for camera-detected seatbelt offences during the testing period.

Putting your seatbelt on is a lot easier than not touching your mobile, so no problems here

    • The camera will catch those that don't wear the seat belt properly,
eg. wear it under the armpit*

eg. wear it under the armpits.

        They deserve a fine.

      • Who tf does that.

Images will be deleted much like Optus with their ex customers’ driver licence details

    • Optus never promised to delete details. The government made them not to

Not sure why you keep linking this, everyone in this thread, me included, thinks that woman is an idiot. Never in my mind have I thought ‘oh that’s how you’re supposed to wear a seatbelt’. My 5 year old cousins and nephews know how to wear a seatbelt.

These cameras, along with red light cameras, along with speed cameras are no problem for the majority who don’t break the law or aren’t stupid enough and know how to put a seatbelt on properly.

      • Also seen someone put the seatbelt on, then duck under the sash bit and put it behind them. Was for off road driving in US, but I’m sure others do it so the don’t crush their fancy clothes.

I know someone who made up a seatbelt latch adaptor to jam in the latch to shut the car up from nagging him to put the belt on.

I asked them, “why don’t you just put the belt on?” To which they replied… “it takes too long, and anyway, cars come with airbags these days”

          • @pegaxs: Cars come with airbags, so why wear seat belts?

People might not be aware that we have air bags because of the situation in the US where the state governments had the power to regulate behaviour, and too many states wouldn't require seat belt use, so the federal government used its power to regulate vehicle manufacturers to require them to fit airbags to protect drivers who weren't wearing seat belts.

And if you look on the air bags in Australia they are referred to as a "supplementary restraint system". Because we required seat belts, air bags were only designed to supplement them, not replace them. They only activate above a certain speed/severity crash, meaning that if you aren't wearing a seat belt in a low speed crash you get thrown around.

The fact is seat belts work a lot better than airbags in lower speed crashes, and air bags come into their own as a supplement in higher speed crashes.

Meh - just let Darwinism take its course.

    • I reckon a spike in the middle of the steering wheel and airbags deactivate should you choose not to use the seatbelt.

Makes people (those still alive) much better drivers.

I’m wait till the “too many camera lovers in this thread… you’se are all un-Australian…” commenter to put us in our place before I comment in this thread.

You’se are all just seat belt wearing, left wing pinko commies. My Kingswood is made of steel and not plastic like all your Chinese made cars, so I don’t need a seatbelt. I never wore a seatbelt as a kid and I didn’t die…

Interestingly you are the only one who has made this claim.

Classic ozbargain make up a person and get mad at that
