Samsung Galaxy S22 Vs Google Pixel 7

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S22 256GB. I purchased it for $1000 on release from the Samsung edu store.

I had a Google Pixel 5 before it and now I am thinking about the Google Pixel 7. I like the UI and the 5 year update promise. JB Hi-Fi has a pretty sweet deal where they are giving $300 on top of trade-in value and I checked my total goes to $850. Google Pixel 7 128GB is $1000 and seems like a good upgrade. I am not too fussed about the super zoom lens, or the storage as 128GB seems fine.

I would like to know your thoughts and please vote in the poll thanks.

What would the Pixel 7 offer that the Galaxy does not? If there is a pressing feature that you need, then go for it.

Otherwise, I would say stick with the S22, since its barely one year old, if not for any reason other than just to cut down on e-waste. Ofc I agree its nice to have shiny new tech but I think we need to be thinking about the environment a bit more

Someone would get a refurb S22, it's not going into landfill.

I find my s22 battery is shockingly bad, unless I have a bad phone. If yours the same, perhaps worth change to pixel 7.

If not, best keep s22 with you

    • Pixel 7's (standard and PRO) battery seems to be disappointing too.
      It's sad…

Pixel 7 Pro here and I think the battery is really good.

  • Why not trade in the Pixel 5 and try both out? Sell the one you dont like on gumtree, you'll get more.

    • Didn't read the OP, did you? He already has a Samsung S22.

      • Yes, that is why I said to trade in an older phone so OP can have both S22 and Pixel 7 to see which one they like.

This way they still get $300 trade-in bonus, and they will get more from selling the phone they don't like on gumtree compared to trade-in.

But then he’d have no Pixel 5, being the last small-size Pixel before Google decided that everyone wanted 6”+ phones

          • @kerfuffle: If I had a Pixel 5 again I'd keep it. Fantastic phone. Too expensive on the used market.

Pixel 7 looks nice but I'd keep the S22.

Too much money to throw around. Bought a 2022 phone and replacing it with a new 2022 phone.

  • Tbh, Pixel phone is good but their 5 year update promise is actually a nightmare if they release a buggy software. From my experience with Pixel phone, I received lots of issues once my Pixel receive an update. I feel like Samsung software is more stable(bug free) compare to Pixel phone

Okay, I had a Pixel 5 before a Galaxy S22 as well, and can defs comment on this.

The S22 is terrible. Sure - the hardware is nice, the cameras are actually really nice, and overall I liked the phone - but the software still sucks and the phone didn't manage thermals very well. I often got slowdowns whilst the phone was still cool to touch, and often at the same time it refused to charge fast enough to top-up whilst navigating (not on the windscreen, too).

On the other hand, the iPhone 13 mini I replaced it with managed all these things very well, resulting in better battery life and overall performance despite being a smaller device. I've since replaced that with a cheap Pixel 4, which (apart from battery life) is on par or better than both the prior devices day-to-day. I will likely be upgrading to a Pixel 7 as this Pixel 4 is a stopgap. Apart from software bugs, I'm expecting it to be a great device. I would get a Pixel 5 but I can't justify the price on the used market.

I swear I'm not a shill - just a massive fan of Pixel phones as they always seem to be best for me, and I'm reminded of that when I switch away.

Edit: So, keep the S22, because day-to-day it's still a very capable device, just don't expect to be able to charge it up during summer, I guess. Unless they've finally fixed it, but Samsung never admit to anything and I found their support to be lacking.
