HTC ChaCha Smartphone $29 (down from $149) - BigW (Vodafone Locked but Unlocked Free!)

1093

HTC Chacha reduced from $149 to $29.80 as part of BigW's current sale. Is locked to Vodafone, but almost certainly can be unlocked for sub-$10 via Ebay vendors or maybe free via Vodafone site handset unlocker.

Only available instore - NOT online but you might be able to get Dick Smiths or Officeworks to pricematch etc.

Is suitable for usage on the Optus network (combine with LiveConnected $11 plan!) here are full specs:

Comes in Black and Silver - fabulous aluminium shell (as used on their top models)construction and has corning gorilla glass screen - I also have a Huawei Ideos X3 and it feels like junk compared to the HTC! Is on Android Gingerbread(v2.3) but am also sure you can flash it with new ROM's will leave for others to confirm.

I'd highly recommend this phone for non-smartphone users making their first smartphone buy or for prolific texters - is also specifically made for FaceBook with a dedicated key etc. The small screen is a small downer but this also gives it great battery life (2 days on stock ROM without tweaking).

At $29 it's a very good buy. My local BigW did not even know about this deal and were amazed they'd been so heavily reduced, so do get them to scan to check. Is a very good buy at this price.

Here's a review, google for plenty more:

Oh and full credit to the original spotter of this deal who poster it in the OzB forums, Bamsegod - thank you for sharing and allowing me to post this up. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/72872

Cheers, Nick :-)

PS. Both handsets unlocked free for me via Vodafone's handset unlocker:

PPS. As these have been on sale for a few days (plus staff buying up) they are hard to find, so best to call stores to check before heading out - apologies if you can't locate but quite a few people have. Good luck . :-)

Hey nikko thanks for posting the deal, I didn't get one (would have loved one!) - not sure why some people are complaining such a great deal surely isn't going to last and it was clear from the start it was limited stock. Keep it up!

    • Thanks pal, sorry you and good folks like yourself missed out. :-/

    • How did you even manage to search for it?

  • Are chachas end of life?

Any chance BigW might get stock in around tuesday?

    • i assume they must be end of life for this price…

    • HTC announced they won't be making budget smartphones in the near future.

In this case I think it could be BigW clearing out remaining stock as they're choosing not to range this item anymore. That's my guess anyway.

No stock in Brisbane, according to BigW head office

  • None in Geelong (VIC)

    • Or Ballarat (VIC)

  • Mark this as EXPIRED, as you'll need to be extremely lucky to still find a BigW store that still has it today at this price.

I went to Big W in Macquarie Centre yesterday - they did not have this model on display and further, the lady minding the tech place told me that I had misunderstood and it is a $29 cap plan . Too tired to argue.

Today I found that Dick Smith in Castle Hill has some stock and called them - but their best price is $90. Don't bother

    No stock anywhere in SA

  • A really wonderful deal

  • I went into Penrith and they're all gone but the lady told me that they might be getting more in so keep checking back lol.

  • No stock anywhere in Townsville. Staff equally unhelpful as per the Spiderman deal.

  • Think this deal started a couple of weeks ago when they had 80% off their discontinued mobiles in the catalogue. If only I bothered to check….

If this was a deal from COTD or some other retailer with such low inventory levels, people would have negged it into oblivion. From reading the comments it appears that only around half-a-dozen stores (at the most) had any stock, and VERY LIMITED stock at that. To put that into perspective, there are around 170 BIG W stores across Australia.

According to the posting guidelines, there has to be reasonable stock inventory levels available at the time of posting for it to be a deal. It's been proven in this instance that stock availability was in fact critically limited at time of posting. There have been countless deals posted on OzB in the past where this was the case and people voted accordingly.

I can't understand the working dynamics of OzB sometimes.

The difference is that with COTD they would have been deliberately using the low stock levels as bait advertising; whereas we all knew that this was an upfront EOL model runout deal that; whilst you are right that many couldn't get; there still were apparently some who got the golden ticket!

The same applies for deals like this one: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/73185 with 46+ and no stock within cooee of my place, that's for sure! ;)

I generally agree with your sentiments.

there still were apparently some who got the golden ticket!

You can count that number if not on one hand, definitely on two!

That sort of stock availability wouldn't normally cut it; referring to posting guidelines.

  • For any lucky new owners I'm trying to get some chat/support going on the HTC ChaCha over in this thread:
