What's The Best GPU That Can Fit in This OptiPlex 3020 SFF PC

https://clearanceguys.com.au/product/optiplex-sff-3020-i5-45…

I have a friend that is thinking of getting this pc

OPTIPLEX SFF 3020 I5-4570 8GB 128GB Ssd $189.95

Dell Optiplex 3020 Small Form Factor (SFF) Desktop PC.

Preowned Condition Grade C – these machines have heavy scratches and dents (examples of kind of damage shown in image gallery)
Intel Core i5-4570 @ 3.2Ghz (please note: you may receive an i5-4590 @ 3.3Ghz at random)
Intel HD Graphics 4600
Includes optical drive (not shown in picture).
8GB Memory
New 128GB SSD

It's a SFF case and I'm trying to figure out what is the most powerful card that can work and fit in this case and motherboard CPU etc.

I know that a 1050 Ti low profile can work in this because I have one in my hp Compaq elite case but I was wondering if there was anything more stronger that can be used in this case.

Taking suggestions otherwise I'll just recommend him to go the 1050 Ti low profile route.

Just trying to get him the most frames in whatever games he wants to play at probably 1080p / 1440p.

So to sum up what's the best card that can fit in this case/mobo?

    Discrete GPU Compatibility Notes

Will only accept single slot GPU in x16 slot (No 1050/1650, only GT1030 or equivalent)

So yeah, dreamin for 1440p, 1080p would be a struggle

Hell even if this one COULD fit the 1050Ti or 1650 non-super, it'd still be a 1080p as best rig.

By all means look for similar types of things without that GPU physical space restriction - but perhaps consider rebuilding whatever you get into a proper case with a proper PSU with PCIe power so you can run whatever GPU you want instead of being limited to expensive, rare, munted, gutless things.

  • +1

    None
i had an older optiplex. i put a graphics card into it so i could get hdmi out.

result: blown psu every 6 months

    • I've been using an older Optiplex as well for the past few years with graphics cards just fine. Had a 1030, 1050ti and finally an RX 570 and I haven't had any issues at all.

i must have kept getting crap psus for my optiplex 9010 (i think) sff

  • Gigabyte 1650 gddr6 is the best affordable card right now
I don’t think any of the new gen cards have a low profile out

I’ve had 3x Dell 9020’s with these cards for my 3x kids and no issues

  • Grade C !!!!!! I think you can do better than a PC with with heavy scratches and dents for that price.

And if you want a lot better graphics than an Intel CPU can provide, you shouldn't be starting with an SFF machine. The case isn't big enough to support a decent GPU, and neither is the PSU.

Ex-lease PCs can be a great bargain, if you buy ones still in good condition, and want to use them for what they were designed for and are good at, being office machines that don't need great graphics.

  • If you want to get creative:
Get a riser to fit a better than gtx1030 gpu, but you will need to feed power to it.
Assuming there are no gpu power connectors so it's only getting power from the pcie slot which is 75watts.
BUT, you may be able to splice power from from sata or molex connectors in the case with adapters off ebay.
You will be limited by the PSU in the case though.
Good Luck as this will be fiddly, do your research.

  • The 3020 has only a 1x PCIe slot on the top slot. This means you need a single slot GPU (some GT1030 and RX6400 are). A dual slot GPU like your GTX 1050 Ti will be stuck running at x1 which will cripple performance
I think the Optiplex 7020 and 9020 have a x4 slot which is not ideal but far better than 1x.

The very best you could run would be a Quadro RTX A2000 which is a professional GPU that beats any other by a large margin but it costs around $800 and you’d probably hit a CPU bottleneck with most games anyway
