Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) - Tax Return

I'm going back to my hometown next week,

I would just like to know, if I want to claim for the TRS, what do I actually need to show the person on duty?
Do I need all the boxes, wires, cables and stuff of my electronic device? (cause that will be a hassle).

Thanks - I'm not sure if its correct to post this here, but any feedback is deeply appreciated.

  • Needs to be bought no more than 30 days before leaving might be the issue you face.

Check all the requirements at the gov website - use google for details

  • I went to America recently and only took the camera, and showed the bloke the camera and receipt and he put the refund back onto a credit card, they dont give you cash, you Ned to have the money put back into a/savings account ir credit card

    • Noted. I have a savings account so thats not a worry.

What I'm worried about is the things I have to show to them upon application.

Because as far as I've checked it doesnt say anything specific on the customs website.

you'll only need to show the item that show up on the tax invoice, so say if it's a camera, you'll need to show the camera, no need to show the charger and other accessories or boxes.

Your invoice need to be less than 30 days old as ozpete said and each invoice gotta be >= $300

The device gotta look reasonably new as well. If not, they'll have some questions and may refuse to refund.

    • would it be safe to bring the chargers and cables or would that be reasonably unnecessary?

      • I wouldn't worry about the cables and charger.

        • thanks alot for the heads up

the point of TRS is that you won't take the item back into Australia. So generally, you would bring all accessories. But you can always say you've put those in your checked in baggage for convenience.

    does online count?

    • if there's GST charged on the invoice, then it counts

Be at the counter at least 30 min before your flight depart. They are VERY anal about it. If the amount is over $1000, you will need to have name and address on the tax invoice.

    • True. A lot of retailers are not aware of this either. Name and address is required it the amsount is over $1000.
I had to make a return trip to the DSE store for another receipt as the salesperson said it would be ok.

    • Didn't want to start a new thread but atleast 30 minutes before means I can only do it between departure and 30 minutes, or anytime from 30 minute to a few hours!

  • Online would count if it's purchased in Australia and comes with GST and an invoice.

I went overseas recently and made a claim. The guy just asked me if I have everything with me and I said yes, then he just processed it without looking at anything. I did have all the goods with me if he wanted to check.

  • My antie doesn't speak english.. Wonder if I can be an interpreter of some sort.
