CTP - at Fault Cover

Hi There,

Can someone please explain if it's worth buying CTP with at-fault cover or just going with the cheapest option available?

Thanks,

  • Statutory cover should be sufficient.

NRMA is probably the only company with an at fault product in the market currently.

Sorry can you please elaborate e.g. if I don't have at-fault ctp and get regular ctp, does that mean if I get injured I can't get treatment?

      • Regular CTP will cover you if injured and at fault. FYI

I don't think you can actually purchase an "at fault" policy.. it's more like an added bonus with NRMA CTP product offering.

  • What does at-fault cover mean? Will other CTP providers not cover you if you are at fault and cause injury?? What is the point of it then?

that's what I don't get either to be honest, like if I don't have at fault ctp does that mean if I get injured I can't get treatment?

CTP is not the same as third party property.

CTP only covers you or anyone you injure in the event of an accident where there is injury to persons. There are no different levels of cover with CTP, you either have it, or you don’t. Irrespective of who is at fault, all personal injuries are covered. Without it, you will not be able to register your car.

Third party property covers damage to others “property” and not your own “stuff”.

CTP is for when you injure yourself or another person
TPP is for when you damage someone else’s stuff (car, house, fence, etc)

      Excellent and concise explanation. 5/7

    • If you were the driver who was entirely responsible for the accident (the at-fault driver), you are not covered for accident-related injuries. https://www.ctp.sa.gov.au/for-injured-people/who-can-claim/i…

      • Yep this is what is confusing me - like it only covers the third person and the at-fault driver is not covered?

        • Correct. If your accident hurts someone else, the CTP covers their injuries. But CTP won't cover yours.

CTP is the bare minimum insurance that they'll let you have in order to drive. It's the "other people don't need to be worried about hospital bills from getting maimed by you driving like a ****wit and you not being rich enough to pay the bill, since they're covered by your CTP" insurance. If you're in SA then it's literally bundled with your registration these days: you cannot register your car without specifying CTP from one of the listed providers on the rego sheet.

Anything above that isn't covered by CTP, and you'd need to set up additional insurance.

          • Want to be able to drive safe in the knowledge that if you have a sudden lapse and accidentally smash into a Benz, you won't be sued into forever-poverty by the irate owner? Then you want Third Party Property cover.
          • Want that and also the ability to file claims for damages to your own car, and also theft protection, etc? Then you want Comprehensive cover (expensive).
          • Your own medical costs for your own accidents would be covered under separate private health insurance (if you have it) or out-of-pocket (if you don't). The CTP just makes it so that others aren't out of pocket for medical expenses for accidents that you caused.
      • Lol. Then move to a state that isn’t so backwards. Such a stupid rule.

And OP did not mention what state they were in, so it’s hard to come up with the correct information based on no information.

    • Where does third-party property come into it? OP asked about CTP

I was offering the information because OP post and subsequent questions made me think that what they might be asking about was TPP.

This forum has a history of people thinking that CTP covers vehicle damage as well as personal injuries, when it doesn’t cover both.

This details my understanding of it: https://www.greenslips.com.au/at-fault-driver-cover.html

TLDR: it's an obsolete policy that only NRMA continue to offer.

Can someone please explain if it's worth buying CTP

Do you know what the C stands for? … Compulsory.

There is no if. No CTP, no drive.

NSW? Each state is different, but as far as I know it’s only NsW is stupid enough to make you buy CTP separately ‘to save money’ because ‘competItion’. I don’t believe it has saved money, they’ve just added an extra layer of profit into the system.

If you don’t buy CTP with at fault cover, you will still receive medical treatment under Medicare and maybe any health insurance you have. Same as if your car is uninsured. What it doesn’t allow is claiming large amounts for lost earnings or pain and suffering etc.

Get the cheapest you can, they are all required to meet a minimum standard. Getting ‘better’ insurance for yourself under CTP is a rort.

      • Totally agree with you.
Yes, NsW is stupid to make us buy CTP separately - so that the insurance companies make more $$$. CTP is a rort in its current form.

In the UK, a fully comp policy INLCUDES CTP as well! Fancy that.

        • I think it’s important to have it as part of the rego fee so that other people are covered. I guess if you’re in a low risk category you’ll save. As it’s attached to the car if a high risk person registers then sells their car to a low risk person the CTP doesn’t get reduced.
