Microsoft Surface Pro 8 SSD Choice, Where to Get a Value Option?

Hi,

I am looking for a value SSD for my Surface Pro 8 to increase it's capacity.

I am a bit confused by the standards… It seems that it takes a specific 1 bolt design of m2 2230 SSD? But it has to be short as well?

Here for example, is a longer version, I don't think it will fit? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07MSQMGLT/?coliid=I1GS7PFKWQUE…

How can I find these? M2 2230 search doesn't really seem to work. There are some used options from China, but they are overpriced and it is a bit risky, warranty is questionable.

Any good cheap options?

  • First dot point on the one you linked to "Space-saving M.2 Type 2242 form factor". 2230 is the form factor you need, so long as it's that it'll be the right length. The last two numbers specifically refer to length (i.e. 42 is 42mm, 30 is 30mm)

2230 is sadly extremely rare and nowhere seems to sell them in Australia. WD make the SN530 but it's pretty expensive - https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-2230-1024GB-SDBPTP…

edit: Lots ship from China on ebay that are Western Digital ones. Supposedly they are, anyway. Bit cheaper, still not a great price compared to regular M.2 drives. But that's pretty much your only option, it's not a well used form factor.

    • There may be some shuckable external ssd options, e.g. CalDigit Tuff Nano. Maybe something else?

  • I bought this 1TB and have been using it for a year in my Surface Pro 8. Working well…

Installation was straightforward though you do need to reinstall Windows, which isn't difficult on the Surface Pro.

    • Did you have to use a heatpad? Or just installed it like that?..

      • I don't recall buying anything extra, I think I used what the one I took out had.

  • I upgraded mine with the 1TB WD SN530 and have the device constantly crashes. It sounds like a lot of people have the same issue with that model so I just bought a SK Hynix BC711 1TB to replace it. Take a look at this list and figure out what the cheapest you can find is.
